I love hydrangeas, especially here in the Pacific Northwest where there are so many varieties and they are so colorful! I do however find them a challenging photographic subject. They are soft and bright, but their petals are full of texture. My style is a low key with specific high contrast light on the subject. This however makes the textures too strong and in my opinion ruins the beauty of the hydrangea flower petal.

In this case I tried combining a high key technique with my standard technique and lower contrast on the subject. This produced less over enhancement of the texture, and kept the bright soft colors one expects of hydrangea blossoms.
