I love books because reading allows me to visualize the characters and scenes from the descriptions, bringing the story to life in my imagination. This mental imagery helps me form a deeper connection to what the writer is trying to convey. Reading expands the mind and opens up new perspectives, enabling me to see the world through different lenses. It cultivates empathy, fuels curiosity, and keeps me open-minded.
In this digital era where almost everything has been virtualized, my preference for the form of books largely depends on my mood. When I want a distraction-free experience and really want to immerse myself in a story, I reach for a hard copy. I put my phone on Do Not Disturb, turn on the fan, get some snacks, and settle into my reading space. There's something grounding and calming about flipping through the pages of a physical book.
While I do read eBooks occasionally, I find the constant exposure to screens exhausting. Beyond the physical strain of screen time, there's also the challenge of avoiding distractions. Whenever I read on my device, I often find myself reflexively opening other apps. A single message notification can lead me down a rabbit hole of Instagram reels or unrelated browsing. It’s a slippery slope that breaks my focus and disrupts the reading experience.
Despite the convenience and portability of eBooks (they’re light and easy to carry around), compared to stacks of paperbacks, I still prefer physical books. They allow for better concentration, provide a break from screen fatigue, and offer a tangible connection to the story. Additionally, hard copy books make thoughtful gifts and are easier to donate or share with others.
In the end, whether in print or digital form, books remain a powerful source of knowledge, imagination, and comfort. But for me, nothing beats the feel, focus, and fulfillment of reading a physical book.
