Nigeria: Music, sports and the spoil

One of the things that gives me joy about Nigeria is that I love Nigerian music so much, and Nigerian music is one of the best and most well-known in the world today. You know that kind of feeling when what you love is at the top and is what’s used to recognize a nation? OMG! As it stands now, there’s hardly any global show like a musical concert, a football event, etc., where Nigerian music or an artist is not recognized. No way! Whenever it comes to picking a song or a list of artists to perform at a global event, Nigeria is always at the top.

A few months back, the England national football team won the Women’s Euro 2025, and during their parade ceremony, Burna Boy, a Nigerian music artist, was invited to perform. And hey, it wasn’t just about the song performed, but the happiness of everybody feeling so high when they heard it was Burna Boy holding the microphone to sing. Even the coach of the national team couldn’t hold back her joy because the Nigerian artist happens to be her favorite.

I’m a big fan of international sports, and during the FIFA World Cup of 2022 in Qatar, Davido made headlines as one of the songwriters of the official theme song and also performed at the sporting event.

When it comes to banter between African countries, every other country submits to Nigeria whenever music is mentioned, and that’s a huge win to take down in any banter line.

Nigeria is so good in music that a particular genre introduced by South Africa was polished so well by Nigerians that it went global, to the extent that it birthed another dimension of it, such as Ojapiano by Kcee and Hausapiano. Give it to Nigeria, please!

Before I leave this topic, another thing Nigeria is known for is football. Heyy! We are a football-loving nation, and we always make waves. Let me pause here because I can exaggerate this football and Nigeria topic into 1,000 words.

One bad thing Nigeria is known for is fraud.

Yeah, I’m not painting anything black or white here.

Some months ago, I was discussing with a non-Nigerian on Hive, and we were talking about money and joking. The friend said that a Nigerian can’t be trusted because they’re known for fraud. Honestly, I didn’t take it to heart; we laughed over it because it’s something the bad eggs in Nigeria have succeeded in using to paint every one of us in a bad light. This is not just a claim—it’s a clear fact. No matter how hard the good Nigerians try to prove themselves good, the corrupt ones keep spoiling it every now and then with their increasing fraudulent acts.

The effects of these two sides: The music side has paved the way for a lot of Nigerians, even for upcoming artists. Nigerians are simply accepted worldwide for good music.

The scam side, however, has been a slap on our faces and a blockage between us and the world at large. This scam identity has made a lot of foreigners skeptical about willingly lending a helping hand to Nigerians.

Thanks for reading.
