Hello Hello Community! ✨, there is definitely something about me that I can't hide anymore, and I must finally admit that I really like to read Dark Romance books 🤣, I know nobody saw it coming but that's the reality, although it is also true that there is a specific series of books that I like the most of this genre, and they are the novels of Emily McIntire, I have already brought here the review of two of her books: [Hooked](https://peakd.com/hive-180164/@kiutvariedades/engesp-book-review-hooked-a-never-after-novel--7qc) and [Scarred](https://peakd.com/hive-180164/@kiutvariedades/eng-esp-book-review-scarred-a-never-after-novel), so when I found that two more of her books were already translated, I immediately went to download them and in one day I devoured one of them, and it is for that reason that today we will talk about ***Wretched: A Never After Novel***.

💚 SYNOPSIS 🖤
**Evelina Westerly** is involved in shady business, her family has positioned itself as a drug distribution empire, in which they have managed to provide an extremely special and striking type of heroin: *‘ The Flying Monkey ’*, although at first glance it seems that her father is who runs the business, the truth is that the brains of the whole organization is her, a cruel and ruthless woman who seeks to avenge the death of her older sister is 100 times more lethal than any man, but even she can fall for love, because when a stranger flirts with her in a bar and then shows up to work for her family under a different name than she had already given him, she knows that she is facing imminent danger.
But **Nicholas Woodsworth** has not only lied about his name, but also about his true intentions in working for the Westerly family, because if there's one thing a DEA agent works for, it's to banish people like Evelina and her family, as long as love doesn't get in the way and make him rethink his own morals.

💚 POETRY, POPPIES AND BROKEN FAMILIES 🖤
If you are not aware, the Neverland series of books written by Emily are based on characters from classic fairy tales, specifically their villains, it is not at all the same story but some references are taken and modified and the characters sometimes appear with the same or similar names, this book in particular all parts of the story of the Wizard of Oz, I personally know nothing about that story but I could still notice the small references that were made.
Apart from those allusive elements, the story is completely new and has the particularity that no one here is either completely good or completely bad, although in theory the ‘villain’ of the original story always wins. In fact this questionable morality of the characters in this story is directly mentioned, *‘We are all in life and we do what we can, under clouds that have many shades of grey ’*, and particularly this has been a detail of these books that I have always liked and found quite interesting.

Now, how is it that I read this story in **one day**, well, simply the characters, the writing, the background of the events and having a woman as the central axis of a drug empire, was the perfect composer for me to end up loving this book even more than its predecessors 🖤. When we talk about the Dark Romance genre we almost always find that its stories are focused on *men of dubious morals who would burn the world for their female protagonists*, and although here the male protagonist does give his all for her, she is really the one of dubious morals, the one who is loaded with violence, the one who is capable of pointing a gun at anyone in order to defend him, and the latter scares the hell out of her 🤣.
But beyond the romance, I think that here we see for the first time what a completely broken family, marked by the preference between children, can do to all its members. Not only does Evelina live with the rage of not being chosen and loved by her parents, but Dorothy also lives with the consequences of being the shadow of her older sister Vanessa, a clear example of what a middle child can feel. Sisters who hate each other to the point of killing each other, and that's what I found most interesting.

Evelina is a very complex character, she knows she is the bad guy in the story and she assumes it from a very young age, she wants by all means to be *chosen* and that is why it is so important for her to be the one in control of everything, so it is no coincidence that she is the brains of the organisation, the one they send when something goes wrong; She lives the ravages of the machismo of the world in which she moves, and she manages it by making it very clear that she is the one in charge, although she gives a lot of power to her father 🤷🏻♀️, because again she wants to be the one chosen by him, only that this role is always publicly carried out by Dorothy.
Her character is lethal, and I love that because it's just what I wanted to read about a woman involved in the drug world, but she obviously has an Achilles heel and that's her family, who **(spoiler)** I really enjoyed her killing 😒.

Nicholas is everything a federal agent should be, committed to his job, willing to do anything for a case, intelligent, charismatic and with personal and family motivations that lead him to want to get as many drugs off the streets as possible. What I like most about his character is that you can really tell when he is Nicholas, and when he is Brayden (the identity he adopts to infiltrate), he never underestimates Evelina in fact since he first sees her he knows she is a danger, he recognizes that she is a highly dangerous woman and as he gets to know her he understands that she is the one who has the most information about the organization, it is not until the end that he really finds out to what extent she is involved, but he knows she is an important piece.
That's exactly why the feelings he develops for her make him question his values and motivations a lot, she represents everything he stands against and gives his all for in the job. My favourite scene of theirs isn't even romantic, it's when she first shows him what she's capable of, that she's not a damsel in distress but the villain of the story, and he's just blown away, I'd even say that's what made him fall in love 🤣.

It is a book with quite explicit sexual scenes, so it is something to take into account, for me it is a 5 star story because something that stands out a lot was the writing, you can see the evolution of the writer in that, and it is something that must be recognized. The ending perhaps could have had more strength, but it really is something that does not decompensate all the previous construction of the story 🖤💚.

💚 SINOPSIS 🖤
**Evelina Westerly** está implicada en negocios turbios, su familia se ha posicionado como un imperio de distribución de drogas, en el cual han logrado proporcionar un tipo de heroína sumamente especial y llamativa: *“ El Mono Volador”*, aunque a simple vista parece que su padre es quién dirige el negocio, la verdad es que el cerebro de toda la organización es ella, una mujer cruel y despiadada que busca vengar la muerte de su hermana mayor es 100 veces más letal que cualquier hombre, pero incluso ella puede caer por amor, porque cuando un desconocido coquetea con ella en un bar y luego aparece para trabajar para su familia con un nombre diferente al que ya le había dado, ella sabe que está ante un peligro inminente.
Pero **Nicholas Woodsworth** no solo ha mentido sobre su nombre, sino también sobre sus verdaderas intenciones al trabajar para la familia Westerly, y es que si hay algo por lo que un agente de la DEA trabaja, es por desterrar a personas como Evelina y su familia, siempre y cuando el amor no se interponga en sus planes y haga que este se tenga que replantear todo acerca de su propia moral.

💚 POESÍA, AMAPOLAS Y FAMILIAS ROTAS 🖤
Si no están enterados, la serie de libros de Nunca Jamás escrita por Emily se basan en personajes de cuentos clásicos, específicamente en sus villanos, no es para nada la misma historia del cuento pero sí se toman algunas referencias que se modifican y los personajes aparecen en ocasiones con el mismo nombre o con nombres similares, éste libro en concreto toda partes de la historia del Mago de Oz, yo personalmente no conozco nada acerca de esa historia pero aún pude notar las pequeñas referencias que se hacían.
Fuera de dichos elementos alusivos, la historia es completamente nueva y tiene la particularidad que aquí nadie es ni completamente bueno, ni completamente malo, aunque en teoría siempre gana “el villano o villana” del cuento original. De hecho ésta moralidad cuestionable de los personajes en ésta historia se menciona directamente, *“Todos estamos en la vida y hacemos lo que podemos, bajo nubes que tienen muchos tonos de gris”*, y particularmente éste ha sido un detalle de éstos libros que siempre me ha gustado y parecido bastante interesante.

Ahora bien, ¿Cómo es que me leí ésta historia en **un día**?, pues sencillamente los personajes, la escritura, el trasfondo de los hechos y tener a una mujer como el eje central de un imperio de drogas, fue la compositor perfecta para que yo terminara amando éste libro incluso por encima de sus antecesores 🖤. Cuando hablamos del género de Dark Romance casi siempre encontramos que sus historias están enfocadas en *hombres de moralidad dudosa que quemarían el mundo por sus protagonistas mujeres*, y aunque aquí el protagonista masculino sí que lo da todo por ella, es ella realmente la de moralidad dudosa, la que está cargada de violencia, la que es capaz de apuntar a cualquiera con un arma con tal de defenderlo, y ésto último la asusta muchísimo 🤣.
Pero más allá del romance, creo que aquí vemos por primera vez lo que una familia completamente rota y marcada por la preferencia entre hijos, puede llegar a ocasionar en todos sus miembros. No solo Evelina vive con la rabia de no ser escogida y querida por sus padres, sino que Dorothy también vive las consecuencias de ser la sombra de su hermana mayor Vanessa, un claro ejemplo de lo que puede llegar a sentir un hijo o hija de enmedio. Hermanas que se odian al punto de matarse entre ellas, y eso es lo que más se me hizo interesante.

Evelina es un personaje muy complejo, sabe que es la mala de la historia y lo asume desde muy pequeña, quiere por todos los medios ser *escogida* y por eso le es tan importante ser quien lleva el control de todo, por lo que no es casualidad que sea el cerebro de la organización, a quien envían cuando algo se tuerce; vive los estragos del machismo propios del mundo en el que se mueve, y lo maneja dejando muy en claro que ella es la que manda, aunque le otorga mucho poder a su padre 🤷🏻♀️, porque nuevamente quiere ser la elegida por él, solo que ese rol públicamente siempre lo lleva Dorothy.
Su personaje es letal, y eso me encanta porque es justo lo que quería leer de una mujer implicada en el mundo de las drogas, pero obviamente tiene un talón de Aquiles y ese es su familia, a quienes **(spoiler)** disfruté mucho que matara 😒.

Nicholas es todo lo que un agente federal debe ser, comprometido con trabajo, dispuesto a hacer lo que sea por un caso, inteligente, carismático y con motivaciones personales y familiares que lo llevan a querer sacar toda la droga posible de las calles. Lo que más me gusta de su personaje es que enserio se nota cuando es Nicholas, y cuando es Brayden (la identidad que adopta para infiltrarse), nunca subestima a Evelina de hecho desde que la ve por primera vez sabe que ella es un peligro, reconoce que es una mujer altamente peligrosa y a medida que la conoce entiende que es ella quien más informa tiene acerca de la organización, no es hasta el final que se entera realmente hasta qué punto ella está implicada, pero sabe que es una pieza importante.
Justo por eso los sentimientos que desarrolla por ella lo llevan a cuestionarse un montón sus valores y motivaciones, ella representa todo aquello por lo que él se opone y por lo que da todo en el trabajo. Mi escena favorita de ellos no siquiera es romántica, sino que es cuando ella por primera vez le demuestra de lo que es capaz, que no es una damisela en apuros sino que es la villana de esa historia, y él solo queda impresionado, yo hasta diría que es justo eso lo que más lo enamoró 🤣.

Es un libro con escenas sexuales bastante explícitas, así que es algo a tener en cuenta, para mí es una historia de 5 estrellas porque algo que destaca mucho fue la escritura, se nota la evolución de la escritora en eso, y es algo que hay que reconocer. El final quizás pudo tener más fuerza, pero realmente es algo que no descompensa toda la construcción previa de la historia 🖤💚.
