A Glimpse of Tomorrow

I found myself standing under the bright lights of a grand stage. The air buzzed with applause, cameras flashed, a gleaming golden award rested in my hand, "Best Actress of the Year". I wore a flowing simple red gown, my smile radiant and my heart full of joy.

Reporters rushed to me. "Koni, how does it feel to be the first actress ever to have this award five different consecutive times?" I laughed lightly, my voice confident and replied "It feels like everything I ever dreamed is finally real.”

Then, I felt a hand slip into mine. Turning around, I saw my handsome husband, Daniel a cinematographer smiling at me. After fielding all the questions, we finally left the hall, walked to our parked car and drove home.

The next morning, I woke up feeling tired but went down stairs to the kitchen with the intention of making breakfast. There I stood in my sunlit kitchen, my two children Bernice and Jaleesa giggling at each other, my husband humming as he prepared breakfast. The scent of pancakes and Milo filled the air.

Success hadn't taken away my peace, it had made it bigger. I was not just admired by my fans, but deeply loved at home. "Mummy come join us" my youngest daughter called out. I quickly joined them . I had always wanted three children two girls and a boy, nothing more than that. However, I had two girls and I love them. I looked around, smiled at my husband, kids and admired the woman I am and hope to be.

My phone rang. When I answered, I heard my manager's small voice on the other end. "Hello ma'am, you have an audition at 10 am and a rehearsal from 2 to 6 pm" "Alright Gift, I’ll be there soon," I replied. Letting out a sigh, I muttered to myself, "It’s going to be a long day". A quick glance at the clock it was already past 9. I rushed to get ready and hurried out of the house.

I walked into a big building named after me, where youngsters gathered for acting workshops and auditions. My voice encouraged them; "don’t stop dreaming. Even when no one believes in you, believe in yourself". They cheered and greeted. I bowed to them as I walked upstairs.

Everything felt so right, planned, so alive. It was so good to be true. I pinched myself as I sat in the conference hall to be sure it wasn't a dream but suddenly, I heard my mom's voice faintly then it became clearer calling my name "Koni, Koni , Koni she called again wake up. I need you to take this stuff, (she dropped a black nylon by the side of my bed) to your grandma".

I opened my eyes and laid without moving, I looked at my celine, then turned round to really check where I was. I was back in my room, the milk coloured wall, my hand bags all piled in one nail, my wooden hanger with my clothes neatly folded on it, my shoes under it, the not so big mirror staring at my bedroom door, the book I had been reading still open beside my pillow, my phone slightly tugged under my pillow, I was back to reality. Oh my! I exclaimed. I picked my phone to check the time, I read 5:35. "You've been sleeping all through the afternoon?" I asked but no one replied me . Of course no one will, I was alone.

For a moment, disappointment squeezed my chest. But then, there was nothing I could do rather than stand up and run errand for my mum. Then I thought to myself, the dream hadn’t just been a fantasy maybe it had shown me what could be. With a deep breath, I sat up and whispered to myself, .“ Oh Lord, help me to make this dream real".
