From The Time Our Well Ran Dry To The Time We Dug a New One Part 1

Since our well ran dry due to the dry weather, our lifestyle has had to change from time to time. There are many issues surrounding the water situation. I truly realized that our lives and water are deeply connected, something I should have understood more deeply before.

After we moved out of the biggest town in this area, our water system switched to a well-water system. Luckily, we had never had any water problems until this summer. Our original well water was very clean and free of bacteria. We could drink it and use it for showering, flushing the toilet, the washing machine, the dishwasher, and most of our daily needs. In addition, we drank spring water that we collected nearby. That’s why we felt so confident about our water supply. Additionally, we also buy some drinking water from the supermarket.

However, during the dry summer, we noticed that the smell and amount of water became worse, and we began to sense that something wasn’t right. Then, finally, we couldn’t flush the toilet anymore—and we realized there was no water left in the well. We were totally shocked! We started looking for survival solutions immediately.

Fortunately, the nearby spring water has helped us a lot in our daily survival. However, we’ve had to fetch water almost every day, and it’s not an easy job. I think I’ve carried more water bottles than firewood for our wood stove this year. Even though we’re tired from work, we still have to go get spring water.

The two closest laundromats closed down a few years ago, so now we have to go to the next town to wash our clothes. Also, when we take showers at the gym, we wash a small load of clothes there, too.

We couldn’t find a well inspector, so we decided to refill the well by hiring a water supply truck. The person who brought the water from the nearest town said he had filled several wells recently. He also told us that even though he refilled other wells, the water quickly disappeared as the wells sucked it down and dried out again. We prayed that it wouldn’t happen to us, but unfortunately, our well water disappeared very quickly after filling it.

Even worse, the man found five mice in our well... Yikes! We had been using contaminated water. Luckily, we hadn’t drunk much of it at that time.

The old well looked exhausted. I said to it, “I’m sorry, and thank you for your hard work. You must be tired.” It looked so sad. Actually, I once had a vivid dream about our well. In the dream, there was a small torii gate (a traditional Japanese shrine gate) in front of it. It was a sad dream. I guess the well was completely finished.

After that, we had to find another plan to drill a new well. When my husband researched well-digging companies, we found out that the cost was very high, and most companies were extremely busy. Many people are having similar issues, as the county office told us. They said they plan to discuss this issue with the mayor soon, and hopefully, we’ll get some kind of support.

Anyway, we finally found a drilling company that could come quickly. The other companies’ earliest availability was next spring. No way! I couldn’t survive a few more months like this. The company we found came yesterday and today, and they successfully dug a new well. I’ll write about part two of the story sometime soon.

井戸が干上がってから掘り直すまで パート１

乾燥した天候のせいで井戸が干上がってしまってから、私たちの生活はいろいろな面での変化を余儀なくされました。水にまつわる問題は本当にたくさんあります。私たちの生活と水がどれほど深くつながっているのかを、今回のことで改めて、そしてもっと深く理解しています。

この地域の一番大きな町から今の場所に引っ越してきて以来、水のシステムは井戸水になりました。幸いなことに、この夏までは水のトラブルは一度もありませんでした。もともとの井戸水はとても清潔で、細菌もなく、そのまま飲むこともできました。シャワー、トイレの水洗、洗濯機、食洗機など、生活のほとんどに使っていました。さらに、近くの湧き水も飲料水として使っていたので、水に関しては完全に安心しきっていたのです。

しかし、乾燥が続いた夏の間、水のにおいと量がだんだん悪くなっていくのに気づき、何かおかしいと感じるようになりました。そしてとうとう、トイレが流れなくなり、井戸の水がまったくなくなっていることに気づいたのです。かなりショックでした。悲しんでばかりもいられないので、すぐに“サバイバル”の方法を探し始めました。

幸いにも、近くの湧き水が私たちの生活を大いに助けてくれています。でも、水をほぼ毎日汲みに行かなければならず、これが簡単な作業ではありません。今年は薪よりも多くの水ボトルを運んだと思います。どんなに仕事で疲れていても、湧き水を汲みに行かなければなりません。プラスして、スーパーから飲み水も念の為に購入しています。

近くにある２つのコインランドリーは数年前に閉店してしまったので、隣町まで洗濯に行く必要があります。また、ジムでシャワーを浴びるときに、少量の洗濯も一緒にしています。

井戸の検査員を見つけることができなかったため、水の給水車に井戸水の補水をお願いすることにしました。近くの町から水を運んできた作業員によると、最近この辺りではいくつかの井戸に水を補給しているとのことでした。しかし、補給してもすぐに水が地中に吸い込まれて干上がってしまう井戸も多いそうです。私たちは「うちはそうなりませんように」と祈りましたが、残念ながら、家の井戸の水もすぐに消えてしまいました。

さらに悪いことに、その作業員の方が井戸の中から５匹のネズミを見つけたのです…。うわっ！私たちは汚れた水を使っていたのです。幸いなことに、このところ、あまり井戸水を飲んでいませんでした。

古い井戸はとても疲れ切って見えます。私は井戸に「ごめんね、今まで本当にありがとう。もう疲れたよね」と声をかけました。なんだか井戸はとても悲しそうに見えました。実は以前、井戸の夢を見たことがあります。とても鮮明な夢で、古い井戸の前に小さな鳥居がありました。なんだか悲しい夢でした。きっと井戸は完全に役目を終えたのだと思います。

それから、私たちは新しい井戸を掘る計画を立てなければなりませんでした。主人が井戸掘り会社を調べてみると、価格はとても高く、どこも予約がいっぱいでした。郡の役所によると、同じような問題を抱えている人が多いそうです。役所では近いうちにこの水問題を町長レベルに報告する予定とのことでした。何らかの支援が受けられることを願っています。

そして、すぐに対応してくれる業者をようやく見つけました。ほかの会社では最短でも来春とのことでした。とてもじゃないですが、そんなに待っていられません。これ以上この生活を数ヶ月も続けるなんて無理です。

今回見つけた会社が昨日と今日の２日間で作業を行い、無事に新しい井戸を掘ることに成功しました。この続きのパート２は、また近いうちに書こうと思います。
