Newborn Blue Jay Practicing Flying in My Yard

There are sometimes birds’ nests in the trees on my property, such as robins and pigeons. Recently, we’ve noticed that there must be a Blue Jays’ nest somewhere high up in a tree in our yard, because some of them look so young and awkward. They don’t even fly properly yet. It looks so pretty and touching to see. I saw a few of them, and one seems to like staying in our yard.

At first, we noticed one Blue Jay resting on our shed roof. The shed is very close to our house, so every time we went out with our dog, the Blue Jay flew away into the bushes. However, it always flew so low, which made me worried that it might be injured or sick.

One day, while I was typing, I felt as if someone was watching me. I turned and saw the Blue Jay sitting on top of the shed again. I observed it for a while.

It looked so tiny, pretty, and awkward. It couldn’t even stay in the same spot steadily. I worried about it again, and then I realized the Blue Jay was a baby! I started calling him “Blue Jay-kun,” which is a common way to address boys in Japanese.

Blue Jay-kun looked so curious about his world. He noticed I was watching him, then began practicing flying. Each flight wasn’t far. He took a long pause between each one, flying noisily into our bushes or trees. His call was very pretty too. He couldn’t even make mature sounds yet.

I couldn’t just watch from inside the house, so I quietly went out without my dog. Blue Jay-kun noticed me and stared at me for a while, then flew into the backyard and dove into the blackberry bushes.

At first, I thought he was struggling because he couldn’t fly well… but actually, he was trying so hard to get a berry.

Ta-dah! Look at his happy face! He came back to the fence near me and proudly showed me the blackberry.

He showed it off for a while, then started eating it with a happy, almost smiling face. He even moved his tail a few times while eating. His feathers looked so vivid and pure, almost like he was a stuffed animal. His brand-new feathers were so clean.

After eating, he looked satisfied and turned toward me. I said, “You did it!” He was practicing flying and learning how to find food by himself. He is learning about life and nature so well, and I felt so happy for him.

I even had a little “conversation” with him for a while.

When I focused my camera on him, he wasn’t afraid at all. He didn’t run away. He seemed to think he lived in our yard with us. My dog likes him very much, and he doesn’t seem to fear us either.

There is a saying,“When Blue Jays appear in your life, it is a sign that the light will soon prevail over darkness.” I believe it’s true. We’ve been dealing with difficulties for a long time, but recently our life stage has been shifting slightly. The environment hasn’t changed much, but our mental strength is slowly growing.

We feel honoured to have Blue Jay-kun living on our property. Our land is safe. No one bothers us except wild cats, raccoons, owls, coyotes, and a few others. We have many trees, enough food, and water.

Actually, this little guy even stole some of our green beans this year. We didn’t harvest enough because of him… but still, we’re happy he’s here.

Finally, he returned to the tall tree where he probably sleeps every night.

Yesterday morning, I hadn’t seen him, so I was worried. But then I heard his call above my house’s roof. Wow! He was flying higher than just a few days ago. He is growing so quickly.

I felt happy, but also a little sad, because someday soon he and his friends will fly south for the winter. I really hope he survives and returns to our property someday.

I don’t feed wild animals, because I don’t want to interfere with their natural lifestyle. Instead, I try to maintain trees, wild berries, and plenty of natural plants for them.

Recently, forest fires have been affecting nature here, and the province warned us about serious air quality issues. We even had to close our windows today because of the smoky air. I want to protect nature as much as I can. If I were very rich, I would buy land and leave it untouched forever. At the very least, I will continue leaving nature on my property as it is, as much as I can.

生まれたての青カケスが家の庭で飛ぶ練習をしています

家の敷地内の木に、ロビンや鳩などの鳥の巣があるのをときどき見かけます。最近では、青カケスの巣が庭の木の上にあることに気がつきました。なぜなら、その青カケスがかなり若く不器用な様子だったからです。まだきちんと飛ぶこともできない模様です。とてもかわいらしく、心が惹かれます。何匹かのうち、１匹は特にわが家の庭を気に入っているようです。

まず初めに、青カケスが物置の上にとまっているのを見かけました。物置は家からとても近い場所にあるので、犬と一緒に外に出るたびに、青カケスが飛び立って藪の中へと消えていきます。ところが、その飛び方といったら、かなりの低高飛空で、もしかすると怪我か病気なのではないかと心配になる程でした。

ある日、タイピングをしていると、誰かがこちらをみているような気がしました。振り返ってみると、また、その青カケスが物置の上にとまっているのが見えました。私はしばらくその様子を眺めていました。

その子はとても小さく、かわいらしくて不器用です。バランスが悪く、同じ場所に黙って座っていることすらままならない様子です。また、心配になり引き続き眺めていると、やっぱり生まれたばかりの赤ちゃんなのだということがはっきりとわかりました。「ブルージェイくん」と呼ぶことにしました。

ブルージェイくんは彼の周りの世界にとても興味津々のようです。こちらがみている事を察知しているようで、そのうち、飛ぶ練習を始めました。一回の飛距離はとても短く、藪や木に向かってバタバタと音を立てて飛び込んでいきます。鳴き方もまだおぼつかず、一定の声が出せない様子です。

家の中からただ黙って観察しておくのがもったいないと思ったわたしは、犬は連れて行かずに一人で外に出ました。ブルージェイくんはわたしに気がつき、しばらくして裏庭のブラックベリーの藪の中に飛び込んでいきました。

初めは、うまく飛べなくてバタバタと四苦八苦しているのかと思いましたが、途中で、ベリーを一生懸命採ろうと努力しているのだということに気がつきました。

ジャーン！みてください、この嬉しそうな顔を。ブラックベリーを一粒くわえてフェンスに戻ってきました。

しばらく、わたしに見せつけるように口に咥えていました。そして、嬉しそうな笑顔でそれを飲み込んで食べました。食べている間、尾が揺れていました。彼の羽は鮮やかで純粋に見えます。まるで、ぬいぐるみのようにきれいな色をしています。真新しい羽はとてもきれいです。

食べ終わると、満足そうに私の方をみました。思わず「すごいね！」と声をかけました。自分で飛ぶ練習やご飯をとる練習を一生懸命しているのです。生きる術と自然を学んでいる姿は、とても頼もしく嬉しい気持ちになります。

わたしたちは、しばらくの間「会話」を続けました。

カメラを向けても、全然驚くことはありません。むしろ逃げもしません。もしかすると、彼は私たちと一緒にこの土地に住んでいる（共有している）と思っているのかもしれません。わたしの犬も彼のことが大好きな様子で、彼もぜんぜん怖がっていないようです。

「青カケスがあなたの人生に現れたら、それは、もうすぐ光が闇に打ち勝つであろうしるしだ」という言葉があります。本当にそうなのではないかと思います。もうかなり長い間いろいろな困難を抱えてきましたが、ここ最近は少し変化があるように感じています。環境が変化したというよりも、わたしたちの強さの種類が少し変化したような気がしています。

ブルージェイくんがわたしたちの敷地内に住んでくれているのは嬉しいことです。野生の猫、たぬき、フクロウ、コヨーテなどに襲われない限りは、この場所は安全だと彼が感じている証拠だからです。木もたくさん生えていますし、食べ物も水も豊富にあります。

実は、このブルージェイくんはわたしたちの畑のサヤエンドウの種を盗み食べていた真犯人だということが判明しています。おかげで、今年はサヤエンドウがかなり少ないです。それでも、彼がここにいることの方が嬉しいです。

さて、彼は毎晩寝ているであろう木の方に向かって飛んでいきました。

昨日の朝、彼を見かけないので心配していると、屋根の上の方から大きな鳴き声が聞こえてきました。おお！もうそんな高いところを飛べるようになったということですね。成長がとても早いです。

嬉しい反面、ちょっと寂しくもあります。きちんと飛べるようになるということは、冬になる頃には南へと旅立ってしまうからです。元気に生き延びて、またいつか戻ってきてくれるといいのですが。

わたしは野生の動物に餌付けはしません。彼らの自然な様式をなるべく邪魔したくないからです。その代わりと言ってはなんですが、木々や、野ベリー、野草などをきちんと保っておけるよう心がけています。

最近は山火事がこの辺りをも脅かしていますので、州が空気の質などについて警告の発表をしていました。今日は風向きによって運ばれてきた煙がかなりひどく、窓を開けることができませんでした。自然をできる限り守りたいと思っているのですが…。もし、ものすごくお金持ちだったら、土地をできるだけたくさん購入し、そのまま誰も触らずに自然に返すようにしていきたいものです。現実にそれが難しいことだとしても、とりあえずは今ある自分の土地の自然を保っておけるように努力したいと思います。
