Cuando toca lavar/When it's time to do laundry (Esp-Eng)

Hola, amigos. Un placer saludarlos, en especial a los miembros de esta comunidad donde me presento por segunda vez. Ayer, mientras lavaba, se me ocurrió la idea de hacer este post y compartir con ustedes parte de mi cotidianidad, porque lavar también es otra de las muchas actividades que hacemos las damas.

A pleasure to greet you, especially the members of this community where I am introducing myself for the second time. >Yesterday, while I was washing, I got the idea to make this post and share part of my daily life with you, because doing laundry is also another one of the many activities we women do.

Lavar cada fin de semana es una de las tantas rutinas de mi vida, ya sea el sábado o el domingo, eso depende de que halla o no, algún plan de salida, casi siempre relacionadas con la literatura. Así que, como nadie más lo hará por mí, me dispongo a lavar la ropa de mi mamá, mi papá, mi hijo y la mía. Antes podía contar con la ayuda de mi hija pero ella ya no vive en Cuba. >Washing clothes every weekend is one of the many routines in my life, whether it's on Saturday or Sunday; that depends on whether or not I have plans to go out, which are almost always related to literature. So, since no one else will do it for me, I set out to wash the clothes of my mom, my dad, my son, and my own. I used to be able to count on my daughter's help but she no longer lives in Cuba.

Los cubanos no tenemos lavanderías a donde ir a lavar, al menos que yo sepa, al menos los de clase media, como yo. Pero lavar, para mi, no es una molestia, es algo que hago con agrado, contrario a otras labores domésticas que disfruto menos, planchar, por ejemplo. >We Cubans don't have laundromats to go to and wash, at least not that I know of, at least not middle-class people like me. But washing, for me, is not a bother; it's something I do gladly, unlike other household chores that I enjoy less, ironing, for example.

Si las condiciones lo permitieran, quizás podría lavar con una menor frecuencia, así no se acumularian tantas ropas, pero hay muchos factores que influyen en eso y lo primero es el tiempo, lo segundo es que halla agua, lo tercero que halla detergente (o jabón en su defecto) y lo cuarto, que no por último es menos importante, que halla electricidad. >If conditions allowed it, perhaps I could wash less frequently, so the clothes wouldn't pile up as much, but there are many factors that influence that: first is time, second is that there is water, third is that there is detergent (or soap as a substitute), and fourth, which is no less important for being last, is that there is electricity.

Si, acá no se pueden hacer muchos planes si de cuestiones eléctricas se trata. Una cosa tan simple como lavar la ropa, puede convertirse en una odisea, cuando menos lo esperas, se va la electricidad y te quedas a medias. Por suerte, mis plegarias fueron escuchadas y ayer no fue el caso. Estaban creadas las condiciones objetivas y subjetivas. >Yes, here you can't make many plans when it comes to electrical issues. Something as simple as washing clothes can become an odyssey; when you least expect it, the power goes out and you're left halfway through. Luckily, my prayers were heard and yesterday that wasn't the case. The objective and subjective conditions were in place.

Amaneció soleado con pocas nubes, aunque en las tardes casi siempre se nubla y cae algún chubasco. Tengo la ventaja de que lavo en casa mis padres y al vivir en un segundo piso, tiendo las ropas en el techo donde hay suficiente sol y aire para que se sequen rápido. Claro que la secadora también ayuda, ese bendito invento que hace que no tengamos que lastimar mucho nuestras manos exprimiendo. >It dawned sunny with few clouds, although in the afternoons it almost always gets cloudy and a shower falls. I have the advantage of washing at my parents' house, and since I live on the second floor, I hang the clothes on the roof where there's enough sun and air for them to dry quickly. Of course, the spin dryer also helps, that blessed invention that means we don't have to hurt our hands much wringing clothes out.

Pués resulta que en pleno ajetreo, el botón plástico de la secadora se partió y me era casi imposible accionarlo con los dedos, pero estaba convencida de que eso no sería un problema grave sabiendo de la ingeniosidad de mi papá, que "en menos de lo que canta un gallo", buscó una excelente y práctica solución. >Well, it turns out that right in the middle of the hustle and bustle, the plastic button on the spin dryer broke and it was almost impossible for me to press it with my fingers, but I was convinced that it wouldn't be a serious problem knowing my dad's ingenuity, who, "quicker than a rooster crows," found an excellent and practical solution.

-Esta arandela va a ser el botón a partir de ahora, cabe perfectamente en las ranuras de metal donde se acciona el botón, problema resuelto- me dijo. >-This washer is going to be the button from now on, it fits perfectly into the metal grooves where the button is activated, problem solved- he told me.

Después de eso, me sentí aliviada y continúe en mi faena. Para protegerme del sol, (hay que protegerse del sol) siempre me pongo un pulóver mangas largas y una gorra de mi hijo. Sí, sé que parezco una jugadora de Softball. >After that, I felt relieved and continued with my task. To protect myself from the sun (you have to protect yourself from the sun), I always put on a long-sleeved pullover and my son's cap. Yes, I know I look like a softball player.

En la tarde, como era de esperar, se nubló y hasta tronó, pero al final fue una falsa alarma. Por suerte, la lluvia no llegó acá y mis ropas (y yo) corrimos con buena suerte. El lavado de ayer fue grande, aunque no siempre es así, eso depende del calor y la cantidad de piezas que se utilicen en la semana. >In the afternoon, as expected, it got cloudy and even thundered, but in the end it was a false alarm. Luckily, the rain didn't reach here and my clothes (and I) got lucky. Yesterday's laundry load was big, although it's not always like that; it depends on the heat and the number of items of clothing used during the week.

Ya en la noche, a eso de las 7 pm, una amiga que vive a unas cuadras me llamó para que fuera un rato a su casa a escuchar música y conversar. De manera que me quité el traje de ama de casa, me vestí y terminé el día entre charlas, bailes, risas y recuerdos. >Later in the evening, around 7 pm, a friend who lives a few blocks away called me to go to her house for a while to listen to music and talk. So, I took off my homemaker outfit, got dressed, and ended the day with chats, dancing, laughter, and memories.
