Con esta irrefutable afirmación, del propio autor, quiero comenzar esta reseña. Truman Capote, el controversial e hiper carismático escritor, periodista y guionista estadounidense, escribió varias obras, pero sin dudas, "A sangre fría", es su obra cumbre.
Basada en un crimen verdadero, esta escalofriante novela siempre ha sido motivo de controversia porque inició como un reportaje periódico y terminó siendo una excelente "novela de no ficción", término que utilizaba el mismo Truman.
"A sangre fría" es un "best-sellers" y nos cuenta, como ya se sabe, la historia del asesinato de una familia entera a manos de dos sujetos que solo querían, según ellos, robar y terminaron matando a todos (cuatro personas) sin el menor escrúpulo. Esta obra, escrita de forma exquisita y con una prosa lírica y elegante, está narrada en cuatro actos lo cual crea suspenso a pesar de que el lector conocer el desenlace.
La novela es una crítica social implacable. En ella se cuestiona la pena de muerte como forma de justicia o venganza, la eterna hipocresía de la religión y la falsa rehabilitación penitenciaria. Cuestiona no sólo a los asesinos, sino también a la sociedad que los creó y las verdaderas raíces de la violencia. Al mostrar la sicología de los personajes (asesinos) Truman los humaniza.
Para escribir esta obra, Truman centró su vida y sus energías en investigar las causas y esencia del horrendo crimen. Para ello, entrevistó a vecinos, policías, y especialmente a los asesinos, con quienes estableció una relación rara, dudosa y compleja. En su momento, se comentó que Capote se había enamoró de Perry Smith (uno de los asesinos) y que manipuló testimonios. Hace un tiempo, tuve la oportunidad de ver un documental donde pusieron entrevistas reales de Truman con los asesinos, un verdadero lujo.
Escribir esta novela le trajo el peor de los costos personales a Truman. Después de esto, se acentuó su alcoholismo y vino su bloqueo creativo. Obra que lo llevó a la cumbre pero también al aislamiento. Este es uno de los pocos libros que he leído de forma digital, pero conseguirlo en físico creo que, al menos aquí, es imposible. Nada como poder ojear y oler un libro, sentirlo en tus manos. La versión cinematográfica de "A sangre fría" de 1967, fue nominada a 4 Óscars .
A sangre fría es un espejo donde se pueden apreciar las contradicciones humanas y su autor logró transformar un crimen grotesco en una tragedia griega contemporánea. La recomiendo a lectores entrenados, no para principiantes.

With this irrefutable statement from the author himself, I’d like to begin this review. Truman Capote—the controversial and hyper-charismatic American writer, journalist, and screenwriter—authored several works, but without a doubt, In Cold Blood is his masterpiece.
Based on a true crime, this chilling novel has always been controversial because it began as a newspaper report and ended up becoming an outstanding "non-fiction novel," a term Capote himself used.
In Cold Blood is a bestseller and tells the story—as many already know—of the murder of an entire family at the hands of two men who only intended to rob them but ended up killing all four without the slightest remorse. Written exquisitely, with lyrical and elegant prose, the work unfolds in four acts, creating suspense despite the reader knowing the outcome from the start.
The novel is an unflinching social critique. It questions the death penalty as a form of justice or vengeance, the eternal hypocrisy of religion, and the false promise of prison rehabilitation. It challenges not only the killers but also the society that created them and the true roots of violence. By exploring the psychology of the characters (the killers), Truman humanizes them.
To write this book, Truman devoted his life and energy to investigating the causes and essence of the horrific crime. He interviewed neighbors, police officers, and especially the killers, with whom he developed a strange, dubious, and complex relationship. At the time, rumors circulated that Capote had fallen in love with Perry Smith (one of the killers) and manipulated testimonies. Some time ago, I had the chance to watch a documentary featuring real interviews of Truman with the murderers—a true privilege.
Writing this novel came at the greatest personal cost to Truman. Afterward, his alcoholism worsened, and he suffered creative burnout. This work elevated him to the pinnacle of success but also led to his isolation. This is one of the few books I’ve read digitally, but getting a physical copy here, I believe, is nearly impossible. Nothing compares to flipping through a book, smelling its pages, feeling it in your hands. The 1967 film adaptation of In Cold Blood was nominated for four Oscars.
In Cold Blood is a mirror reflecting human contradictions, and its author succeeded in transforming a grotesque crime into a contemporary Greek tragedy. I recommend it to seasoned readers—it’s not for beginners.
