Do Games and Movies Online count as real rest?

I think normally, when someone talk about rest, most of the time they mean either sleeping, taking a nap or lying down and doing absolutely nothing. That's the usual definition, right? But I guess, "rest" doesn't always mean that now. Rest can also mean either Netflix, YouTube or playing a game until you lose track of time.

There was a day I came back home from work and I told my dad that I was going to rest for some time before doing what he asked me to do, because I was very tired. Later, when he walked into my room and saw me watching a movie on my phone and asked "is watching movie rest for you?". I didn't even know how to answer him immediately. On one hand, I was tired and the movie was helping me relax. But on the other hand, if we go by the normal meaning of rest, then maybe watching a movie doesn't count. Like am I really resting or just draining myself in another way?

There are days that I have been very tired after a long day at work or school, and instead of actually resting, I decide to watch movies but when I'm done with the movie, I actually feel better than before. I have laughed and forgot about the stress for a while, and yes, it honestly felt like rest. But not every time. There are also days when I tell myself "just one episode" and before I know it, I've watched several. Those days does not feel like rest at all. And then I end up feeling bad for wasting that time, and my body feels even more tired because I did not close my eyes nor move away from screen. The same thing happens with games. Sometimes a short gaming session help me cool off but if I overdo it, it's another kind of tiredness.

So I guess for me, it depends. Sometimes movies and games are rest, sometimes they are distractions. If it's for something like watching a comedy to lift my mood, I think it counts as rest, but if I'm only doing it because I do not want to sleep, then it's not really rest. After my dad asked that question, I was asking myself what rest really is, lol. Sometimes it's sleep, for me and sometimes it's watching a movie, reading or playing games. I don't think it has one fixed meaning. Rest is just whatever helps you feel better than before.

What do you think? Does games and movies count as rest or do you see them as another distraction or a tiring activity?
