Yesterday, I was going through my watchlist in search of a movie to watch, so as to enjoy my weekend more. And I settled for Pride and Prejudice the 2005 movie. And yeah, I can say the movie gave me that satisfaction that I think only a good movie can. I’m actually surprised that the movie almost two decades old because it does not seem outdated at all but seem like a new movie.
The Plot
Pride and Prejudice shows us the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. Elizabeth is a smart and outspoken lady. She is the second child among five children. With her mom just looking for how to get all five of her girls married. Mr. Darcy is a rich and introverted man with pride so high up. Their first impressions of each other were anything but good looking. Elizabeth sees him as a proud and cold man, while Darcy is blinded by his pride and social position. Pride blinds Darcy and prejudice blinds Elizabeth until the both of them slowly begin to realize that their judgments were wrong.
I love Elizabeth’s smile, she looked so much prettier with it on and I liked how she didn’t let anyone walk all over her, not even Darcy. She laughed, teased and wasn’t bothered with a society that wanted women to just smile and obey. And then there is Darcy, at first, he looked stiff and awkward but as the movie goes on, you begin to see the tenderness underneath, especially in the way he looks at Elizabeth. That rain-soaked confession scene is still replaying in my head and don’t get me started on the morning mist proposal, it was so soft and vulnerable that it almost doesn’t feel like acting.
Darcy said “You have bewitched me, body and soul. And I love, I love, I love you. I never wish to be parted from you this day on”. I literally blushed hard and curled my legs here. I think Darcy is such a shy sweetheart and I don’t think I will ever forget the way he said those words. It was so soft, sweet and desperate all at once.
One of the things that made the movie so beautiful for me was the scenes. The rolling green fields, Elizabeth standing against the vast English sky and the candlelit rooms, and the music, that soft piano tone.
As lovely as it was, I cannot help but feel like their love story was too short. Almost the entire movie is spent watching them misunderstand each other, fight against their pride and wrestle with what they feel. Then just after they admit their love for each other, the movie end almost immediately. I wish the movie was a little longer, even if it was just a glimpse of their life during marriage.
Final Thoughts
Pride and Prejudice is the first countryside movie I have seen in a while and I think this movie has bewitched me the same way Elizabeth bewitched Darcy, lol. Even though I would love to watch. more of their story, maybe that’s what makes it so very good, the fact that it ended in such a way that makes me want more. For me, it’s a solid 10 stars, it’s a movie that stays in your mind even after you have reached the end. Definitely worth a watch
