According to the FMI report released today, the market for products derived from food waste is expected to grow from $60.8 billion in 2025 to reach almost $99 billion by 2035 with a projected 5% annual growth rate. The market expansion results from circular economy approaches and upcycling technologies which transform food waste into marketable products. The United States maintains its position as the biggest market while Germany demonstrates the fastest growth and Asia Pacific nations including China and India are establishing themselves as major market participants. The market consists of three company segments which include large multinational corporations and regional experts and small local businesses that operate through digital platforms.
At first glance this sounds positive, less food in the landfill, more “circular economy” solutions. But it also feels like the system is doing what it always does: turning waste into yet another commodity to be sold back to us.
Instead of addressing overproduction and overconsumption, are we just inventing a new industry to profit from the fallout? Is “upcycling waste” a genuine fix, or just another way to make consumption feel sustainable?
Curious how others here see this trend.
