The McKinsey Sustainability in Packaging 2025 report collected data from 11,000 consumers across 11 countries which represents half of global population and two-thirds of global GDP. The survey revealed that consumers prioritize recyclable packaging above all else followed by recycled content and reusability while glass and paper stand out as the most environmentally friendly materials yet PET remains suitable for nations with established recycling infrastructure. Environmental concerns rank below price, quality, food safety and shelf life for most consumers yet French and Italian consumers demonstrate higher sustainability values.

People demonstrate readiness to pay more for sustainable packaging yet their buying choices remain unaffected by environmental benefits. People view sustainable packaging as a responsibility that belongs to brands and packaging producers instead of taking personal responsibility through their purchasing decisions and recycling practices and additional payments.
