There are films and stories so memorable and exciting that often just a small fragment of them is enough to make you want to see the whole work. This is precisely what happened to me with the old movie Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, a vampire movie from 2000 whose character and legacy are so memorable that I think many people know it even without having seen the story. Something interesting about this movie is that it tells a somewhat different story of vampire hunters, and if you pay attention to the details, it seems to be very inspired by Castlevania in the blood relationship between the protagonist and the main villain.
This story presents us with a futuristic dystopian reality, somewhat similar to Steampunk, where vampires have dominated the world of shadows and humans are constantly fighting to hunt down and eliminate all the vampires they see. Our protagonist is D, a character as mysterious as his one-letter name. D is a Dhampir, a hybrid creature between a human and a vampire. In short, he is a character with the strength, agility, and lethality of a vampire, but without their magical abilities or the power to fly. However, he does not have the enormous weakness to sunlight, although if he spends too much time under the intense sun, he can become weakened, and he seems to be able to keep the typical vampire thirst for blood suppressed.
The focus of the story seems simple: the daughter of nobles is kidnapped by a vampire, and they hire several people to bring her back or kill her and the vampire if he has turned her. D is also hired, although we can see from the beginning that almost everyone else hates and despises the Dhampir for being half-vampire, regardless of the fact that D is also a vampire hunter and has been fighting them for centuries. The other protagonists are a group of famous hunters, the only character with any development and importance in the plot being Leila, a hunter who uses firearms and whose past and motivation for becoming a hunter is tragic, as the death of her parents is linked to vampires.
Being a vampire story, there are several magical and fantastical aspects, with multiple evil creatures, from giant manta rays flying over the deserts to a kind of shadow demons who are the vampires' mercenaries, creatures with truly incredible and unexpected abilities who, unlike vampires, are not affected by sunlight. At some point in the story, all these creatures confront D and the hunters in an attempt to achieve their goal of stopping them and allowing the vampire to escape with the kidnapped girl, where we can also see a romantic and dramatic aspect of the story directly related to these two characters.
Perhaps one of the most criticizable aspects of this film is the background and stories of its characters. The film mainly follows an action and mystery approach, meaning that you don't get to know much about the characters' pasts. Even D, the protagonist, has a quiet, mysterious, and somber personality, and we don't learn anything else about his past or his motive for hunting vampires beyond the fact that, as a Dhampiro, he can live neither as a vampire nor as a human, existing in limbo between the two worlds and rejected by both sides. For this reason, although the story keeps you intrigued and excited with its scenes, it also keeps you in constant doubt about everyone's past and creates many characters who feel empty and only serve to provide moments of action, as is the case with Leila's other companions.
The outcome of this story is undoubtedly quite unexpected, with very striking, incredible scenes, but at the same time quite intriguing, where you don't know what is happening. There is even a space rocket to generate more surprise and leave you with many more questions. Something that is annoying is how, towards the end, a new character is incorporated into the story who, in a way, ends up being another villain, but, as with Meier, the vampire who kidnaps the Noble, almost nothing is revealed about his past, and he is limited to scenes of combat or demonstrations of his power. In the end, you are left with very little information about almost all the characters, and everything focuses on the combat and dramatic moments. Nevertheless, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust is a fairly interesting film to watch, even though it is 25 years old.

Hay películas e historias tan memorables y emocionantes que muchas veces basta con un pequeño fragmento de la misma para decirte a ver toda la obra, esto precisamente me sucedió con la antigua película de Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, una película de vampiros de año 2000 cuyo personaje y legado es tan memorable que incluso creo que muchos lo conocen aun sin haber visto la historia, algo interesante con esta película es que narra una historia de cazadores de vampiros algo diferente y que si presta atención a los detalles la misma parece estar muy inspirada en Castlevania en la relación sanguina del protagonista y el villano principal.
Esta historia nos presenta un realidad distópica futurista, un aspecto algo similar al Steampunk en donde los vampiros han dominado el mundo de las sombras y los humanos mantienen una lucha constante con cazar y eliminar a todos los vampiros que vean, nuestro protagonista será D, un personaje tan misterioso como su nombre de únicamente una letra, D es un Dhampir una criatura hibrida entre un humano y un vampiro, en resumen es un personaje con la fuerza, agilidad y letalidad de un vampiro, pero sin contar con sus habilidades mágicas o poder volar, pero tampoco cuenta con la enorme debilidad a la luz solar aunque de igual manera si dura mucho tiempo bajo el intenso sol puede llegar a debilitarse, y parece que logra mantener reprimido la típica sed de sangre de los vampiros.
El enfoque de la historia parece sencillo, la hija de unos nobles es raptada por un vampiro y contratan a varias personas para traerla de vuelta o asesinarla a ella y al vampiro en caso que la haya convertido, D también es contratado, aunque podemos apreciar desde el principio como casi todos también tiene un odio y repudio hacia los Dhampir por ser mitad vampiro, no importa que D también sea un cazador de vampiros y desde hace siglos este luchando contra los mismos. Los otros protagonistas serán un grupo de famosos cazadores en donde el único personaje que cuenta con un poco de desarrollo e importancia en la trama será Leila, una cazadora quien usa armas de fuego y cuyo pasado y motivación para ser cazadora es trágico al estar relacionada la muerte de sus dos padres con los vampiros.
Al ser una historia de vampiros, contamos con varios aspectos mágicos y fantasiosos al tener múltiples criaturas malvadas, desde unas mantarrayas gigantes que vuelan sobre los desiertos, hasta una especie de demonios de las sombras que son los mercenarios de los vampiros, criaturas con habilidades realmente increíbles e inesperada quienes a diferencia de los vampiros no se ven afectados por la luz solar. Todas estas criaturas en algún momento de la historia enfrentan a D y a los cazadores para tratar de cumplir su objetivo de detenerlos y permitirle al vampiro escapar con la joven raptada en donde también podemos apreciar como aparecer un aspecto romántico y dramático en la historia relacionado directamente con estos dos personajes.
Tal vez uno de los aspectos que mas se le puede criticar a esta película es el trasfondo e historias de sus personajes, la película mayormente sigue un enfoque de acción y misterios, provocando que no llegues a saber mucho sobre el pasado de los personajes, incluso D que es el protagonista tiene un personalidad callada, misteriosa y sombría en donde no llegas a saber mas nada sobre su pasado o motivo para cazar vampiros más allá de comentar que siendo un Dhampiro no puede vivir ni como un vampiro ni como un humano, un limbo entre los dos mundos y siendo rechazado por ambos bandos. Por esto, aunque la historia te mantiene intrigado y emocionado con sus escenas, también te mantiene en constante duda sobre el pasado de todos y además crea muchos personajes que se sienten vacíos y solo sirven para tener momentos de acción como es el caso de los demás compañeros de Leila.
El desenlace de esta historia es sin dudas bastante inesperado, con escenas muy llamativas, increíbles, pero al mismo tiempo bastante intrigantes en donde no sabes que esta sucediendo, incluso aparece un cohete espacial para generar mas sorpresa y dejarte con muchas mas dudas, algo que si resulta molesto es como hacia el final se incorpora a la historia un nuevo personaje que de cierta forma termina siendo un villano más, pero de igual forma como sucede con Meier el vampiro que secuestra a la Noble, casi no se cuenta nada sobre su pasado y se limita a exhibir escenas de combates o de la demostración de su poder. Al final terminas con muy poca información sobre casi todos los personajes y todo se enfoca en los combates y momentos dramáticos. De igual manera Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust es una película bastante interesante de ver incluso para tratarse de una película con 25 años de antigüedad.
