Breaking the Cycle
We often read macabre stories about people who, at first glance, seem like monsters capable of committing unimaginable atrocities. We think they aren't human, and sometimes we even imagine the involvement of invisible evil forces.
Although there is no ethical or moral justification for certain actions, if we delve into the lives of their perpetrators, we often find a pattern of childhood abuse.
Setting aside psychopaths and sociopaths from the hypothesis, many of the greatest crimes in history have been committed by individuals who were themselves victims during childhood.
It is ironic to think that the human mind can process traumatic experiences in ways we consider illogical, because those of us who haven’t endured such situations assume that someone who has should be the first to avoid inflicting the same pain and harm on others.
The truth is, we cannot predict how a person will react to traumatic events. Some overcome their emotional wounds and try to help others. Sadly, there are also those who choose to use what happened to them as an excuse to commit the same acts against innocent people.
Without a doubt, repeating the cycle of abuse is a path to turning the world into a living hell. That’s why society must remain alert and respond to these situations, offering support and help to victims so they don’t become perpetrators in the future.
What we must be absolutely sure of is that there should never be a moral or ethical justification for people who were hurt in the past to hurt others. Regardless of what someone has gone through, they are solely responsible for their decisions and have the great opportunity to break that cycle of abuse and mistreatment.
The real question is: how can we prevent abuse, mistreatment, and harm from being perpetuated within society? These cases are not isolated, and it is terrifying to think that the main victims are often those who need the most protection—children and the elderly. We must not forget pets either, because even though they technically don’t have the same rights as humans, they deserve equal compassion.
Knowing that most cases occur within the family environment, I’ve always wondered how it’s possible that governments are stricter with people who want to drive cars or own weapons than with those who want to have children or pets—creatures who are completely vulnerable and defenseless.
It’s illogical to think that we’re required to pass psychotechnical and knowledge tests to enter educational institutions, but to bring children into the world, there’s no requirement for financial solvency, let alone emotional stability.
Seen this way, society and governments seem to be promoters of these aberrant acts—at least by omission—since we know they’ve been controlling and supervising many aspects of social life for years, yet they “forget” to regulate matters far more important than the validity of a driver’s license.
Romper el ciclo
Muchas veces leemos historias macabras sobre personas que a simple vista son monstruos capaces de cometer atrocidades inimaginables, y pensamos que no son humanos y a veces hasta imaginamos la participación de fuerzas malignas invisibles.
Aunque no exista justificación ética o moral para ciertas acciones, si ahondamos en la vida de sus perpetradores podemos encontrar un patrón de maltrato infantil en muchos de los casos.
Eliminando de la hipótesis a los psicópatas y sociópatas, muchos de los mayores crímenes de la historia han sido cometidos por personas que a su vez fueron víctimas en su infancia.
Es irónico pensar que la mente humana pueda asimilar las experiencias traumáticas de maneras que pensamos ilógicas, porque quienes no sufrimos ese tipo de situaciones suponemos que quién las haya pasado debería ser la primera persona que evite infringir el mismo dolor y daño que le hayan ocasionado a otras personas.
La verdad es que no podemos predecir las formas en las que una persona reaccionará ante eventos traumáticos. Hay quienes superan sus heridas emocionales e intentan ayudar a otras personas. Lastimosamente también existen las que deciden utilizar como excusa lo que les pasó en la vida para cometer los mismos actos contra otras personas inocentes.
Sin dudas, repetir el ciclo de maltrato es el camino para convertir el mundo en un infierno, por eso es necesario que la sociedad esté alerta y reaccione antes este tipo de hechos, y que ofrezca contención y ayuda a las víctimas para que en el futuro no se conviertan en victimarios.
De lo que sí debemos estar seguros es que no debería existir nunca una justificación moral o ética para las personas que fueron lastimadas en el pasado y que lastimen a otras, porque sin importar lo que cada persona haya pasado, es la única responsable de sus decisiones y tiene la gran oportunidad de romper ese ciclo de maltrato y abuso.
La verdadera pregunta es, cómo podemos evitar que el abuso, maltrato, y el dañar a otras personas pueda ser perpetuado dentro de la sociedad. Los casos no son aislados, y es aterrador pensar que las principales víctimas suelen ser quienes necesitan mayor protección: los niños y los ancianos. Tampoco debemos olvidar a las mascotas, porque a pesar de técnicamente no tener los mismos derechos que los humanos, se merecen igual compasión.
Sabiendo que la mayoría de los abusos se comenten dentro del seno familiar, siempre me he preguntado cómo es posible que los Gobiernos sean más estrictos con las personas que desean conducir automóviles o tener armas, que con quienes desean tener hijos o mascotas, que son criaturas totalmente vulnerables e indefensas.
Es ilógico pensar que hasta para ingresar a instituciones formativas nos exigen pasar pruebas psicotécnicas y de conocimientos, pero para traer hijos al mundo, no exigen siquiera solvencia económica y mucho menos estabilidad emocional.
La sociedad y los gobiernos vistos así, parecen ser los promotores de estos actos aberrantes, al menos por omisión, ya que sabemos que hace años controlan y supervisan muchos aspectos de la vida en sociedad,pero se "olvidan" del control de aspectos mucho más importantes que la vigencia de un carnet de conducir.
