Today I’m taking you to Spain, to the breathtaking Basque Country — a region that never fails to impress me no matter how many times I pass through. Among the many beautiful spots along the Atlantic coast, one always steals my heart — the cliffs of ZUMAIA.
This stretch of coastline is one of the most fascinating geological sites in the world. The famous Flysch cliffs of ZUMAIA form part of the Basque Coast Geopark, which extends between the towns of Deba, Zumaia and Mutriku. Here, the layers of rock — over 8 kilometers long and reaching up to 60 million years in age — reveal an uninterrupted record of Earth’s history. 🌍
Each stripe of rock represents thousands of years of sediment deposited on the ocean floor, later lifted and tilted by the collision of tectonic plates. When you stand there and look closely, you can literally read time: dark shale layers mark calm periods, while lighter limestone bands record times of warmer seas and abundant life.
But one of the most extraordinary facts is that the cliffs of ZUMAIA contain a clear geological boundary known as the K–Pg line — the layer of clay that formed after the asteroid impact that ended the age of dinosaurs 66 million years ago. It’s one of the best-preserved records of that event anywhere on Earth! 🦖💥
No wonder scientists from all over the world come here to study it — and photographers come to simply stare in awe. The combination of science, nature, and raw Atlantic beauty makes this place truly unforgettable. 🌊
For me, ZUMAIA is one of those magical stops that always remind me why I love this road life — because sometimes, between one delivery and the next, you get to walk through millions of years of history.
