This time I’m sharing a sketch I made while practicing how to draw water. Lately, water has been constantly on my mind. I wash my face with cold water every hour just to feel some relief. I’m one of those people who are firmly against air conditioners — partly because we need to save electricity in Ukraine and also because of global warming. Although there doesn’t seem to be a shortage in our system right now, since we’re receiving enough supply from Europe. And that’s honestly amazing — that even during this hellish heat (when we know for sure most people in Europe are blasting their ACs), the power keeps coming without disruption.
Last summer… when our nuclear power plants went offline for maintenance and we got hit by a heatwave at the same time… that was epic. My little daughter tried to attend kindergarten for half a day, and I would fill her a small basin with water in the morning so she’d have it when I came to pick her up — because I can’t get water without electricity; my water is pumped. And I “prayed” that the blackout around noon would be scheduled. Still, twice I had to carry her up to the 15th floor using the stairs. At least the water was ready for her — whether I’d get lucky and have some after that exercise was another matter.
Living high up makes things worse in the heat not just because we might sit without water or have to use the stairs, but also because there are no tall trees nearby to cool the building. The walls get blazing hot in the morning (and all my windows face east), and even in the evening, after sunset, the heat radiates from the walls into the apartment — it gets incredibly stuffy. That’s when it’s finally time to go for a walk, after 7, when it’s fresher and nicer outside. Summer always has me dreaming of a little house under the cherry trees, but we still haven’t gotten around to buying one. Sometimes I even wonder if we could afford one at all — because I know how much work goes into maintaining a house. It’s not just the larger size, but also that the walls and roof are fully the owner’s responsibility. And the garden — on our rich chernozem soil — would overgrow at incredible speed. But we still want to try — because it’s beautiful… and self-reliant.

P.S. As for the sketch — I’d note that drawing water means drawing the reflections of what’s around it, the highlights and ripples. And if the water is clear, then you also partly draw the bottom, which appears closer due to the refraction angle. Also, to make the image feel more “delicious,” I added some reddish tones here and there, as complementary contrast to the surrounding green environment.

Цього разу я поділюсь скетчем, який я робила, щоб потренувати воду. Вода зараз просто весь час в думках. Я бігаю умиватись щогодини холодною водою, щоб було полегше. Бо я серед тих людей, які категорично проти кондиціонерів. В тому числі бо нам потрібно економити електроенергію в Україні і через глобальне потепління. Хоч зараз вже ніби й немає дефіциту в нашій системі, бо нам достатньо постачається з Європи. І це прям класно, що навіть в оцю пекельну спеку (коли ми точно знаємо, що в Європі майже всі включають кондиціонери) нам йдуть поставки без перешкод.
Бо минулого літа... коли у нас пішли на ремонт атомні електростанції, і в той же час накрило спекою... це було епічно. Моя донечка тоді намагалась піти в садочок на півдня, і я їй набирала ванночку води зранку, щоб вода точно була, коли я її заберу, бо у мене без електроенергії вода не піднімається насосами. Ну і “молилась”, щоб близько полудня вимикали за графіком, хоча двічі мені все ж довелось піднімати її на 15й поверх сходами. Ну і для неї вода була набрана, а мені як пощастить після таких вправ.
Власне те, що ми живемо високо, робить наше життя гірше у спеку не тільки тому, що можна сидіти без води чи підніматись сходами, а й тому що немає навколо високих дерев, які б охолоджували будинок, тому стіни розжарюються зранку (а у мене всі вікна на схід), і навіть ввечері після заходу сонця стіни віддають тепло в будинок і тут дуже спекотно. Саме час йти гуляти після сьомої, бо внизу на вулиці свіжо й гарно. І влітку я особливо мрію про будиночок під вишнями, але ми все ще не зібрались купувати. Іноді я навіть думаю, що ми не потягнемо ресурсно будинок, бо я бачу, скільки утримання будинку потребує роботи. І те, що будинок більше, і те, що зразу всі стіни і дах є відповідальністю господаря. І сад навколо, який на наших черноземах буде заростати з неймовірною швидкістю. Але спробувати ми все ж хочемо, бо це красиво... і незалежно.

PS Що ж до скетчу, відмічу, що малювання води — це малювання того, що відображається в ній навколо, бліків та хвиль, ну і якщо вода чиста, то ще частково дна, яке здається ближче через кут заломлення світла. Також, щоб зображення здавалось “смачнішим” я додала деінде червоних тонів, протилежних для зеленого навколишнього середовища.
