Hello, Hivers! We haven't written in a very long time because we were busy with our jobs and renovation and the arrangement of the house we now live in.
I was working as a trainee for a food technologist at one industry in Zagreb that deals with strong alcoholic beverages. It was quite interesting, but very dynamic and I quit after a year because I had other plans in my life.
First of all, it was time to travel which I missed the most. The freedom of doing what I want and going where my heart leads me is the most beautiful feeling to me. We bought cheap one-way tickets from Venice to Morocco for about 25 euros per person, packed our bags with only the most essential things, and were ready to go.
A short anecdote First, we had to get to Venice from Zagreb so we took an overnight bus. We were supposed to arrive around 5 or 6 a.m but the driver was driving so fast that we got to Venice at around 2 a.m. There wasn't any transport to the airport at that time and all cafes and restaurants were closed. The only option was to get a taxi to the airport where we could chill and wait for our flight, but the ride was very expensive. So when we were thinking about what we should do, some girl approached us and asked do we know how to get to the airport. We talked a little and then I said something to Denis in Croatian (our native language) and the girl realized we were all from Croatia so we started laughing. The funny part was that she was also flying to Morocco and all alone with 23 years old. And so we agreed to share the cost of a taxi and went to the airport quickly...only to find out that the airport was closed and we had to wait for 3-4 hours outside in the cold until it opened at 6 a.m. We were freezing and walking in circles to warm ourselves for a few hours and then went to get some coffee at a gas station that opened at 5 a.m. That coffee brought us back to life.
Exhausted and tired we finally came to Fes, the beautiful old city of Morocco. Living in Europe, this city was such a cultural shock for us. Crazy driving on the roads, everyone on the streets talking and doing something (mostly selling all kinds of stuff), the narrow streets of the medina and the thousand smells on every corner, the whole vibe and energy, and so much more. It was a whole new experience for us and we were so excited to be here.
We had great accommodation in Medina of Fes called Riad Zina Fes. It cost us around 25 euros for 2 people and if you want breakfast it's a few euros extra, but totally worth it! The room was clean and spacious and the breakfast was really good (they served really good coffee and mint tee, some sweet and savory bread, m'semen-traditional food like some kind of flatbread, scrambled eggs, honey, jam, yogurt, cheese, and olives).
What I really love about this riad and actually every riad we stayed in is that it has a rooftop terrace with a great view of the whole city. Perfect for chilling, absorbing the sun and enjoying the views far away from all the noise and crowds.
The Medina of Fez is one of the largest in the world and the largest metropolitan area without car traffic in the world.
