When it comes to being in the mountains, I always like to go the extra mile, and I am proud to say that I have been to all the places I wanted to see. The mountains of Ushuaia are so beautiful that I wanted to enjoy them as much as possible, and even more so when I decided that it wouldn't be long before I had to leave the city. One of the last treks I did to slowly say goodbye was the one that included a view of Lago Escondido that was new to me:
although taking this postcard home with me hadn't been part of my initial plans, I was grateful that it turned out that way ❤️.
Cuando se trata de estar en la montaña, siempre me gusta ir más allá y con orgullo puedo decir que me he llevado a todos los lugares que quería ver. Las montañas de Ushuaia son tan hermosas que quería disfrutarlas lo máximo posible, y más aún cuando decidí que ya faltaba poco para tener que irme de la ciudad. Uno de los últimos trekkings que hice para ir despidiéndome lentamente fue aquel que incluyó una vista inédita para mí del Lago Escondido: si bien llevarme esta postal no había estado en mis planes iniciales, agradecí que haya sido así ❤️.

Like every Saturday, my friend Naty and I had rented a car and wanted to take advantage of it to go somewhere new for both of us. Luckily, that afternoon we found three more people who went with us and helped us split the cost. It all started as an impromptu trip north of Ushuaia, first passing through the famous
Paso Garibaldi, and then walking about 5 km to Laguna de
los Perros and Laguna Raquel. We thought that was enough and we would return by the same route we had taken, but our offline maps showed us an alternative route that allowed us to make an almost circular route.
Como cada sábado, mi amiga Naty y yo habíamos alquilado un auto y queríamos aprovecharlo para ir a algún lugar nuevo para ambas. Por suerte, esa tarde conseguimos a tres personas más que fueron con nosotras y nos alivianaron ese gasto. Todo empezó siendo un paseo improvisado hacia el norte de Ushuaia, primero pasando por el famoso Paso Garibaldi, y luego caminando unos 5 km hasta la Laguna de los Perros y la Laguna Raquel. Pensamos que hasta ahí había sido suficiente y volveríamos por el mismo camino que la ida, pero nuestros mapas sin conexión nos mostraron una ruta alternativa que nos permitía hacer una ruta casi circular.

Improvising a path in the mountains is never a good idea because it can be dangerous, so I don't usually do this. However, on that occasion there were five of us and we all decided to take that other route. It looked well marked on the map, and we assumed we wouldn't have any problems. This new path included crossing a mountain ridge, climbing to the top of Cerro Negro, descending the top of Cerro Verde, and passing by the Lagunas Gemelas, before descending again to Route 3. It sounded very adventurous, and I was so eager to keep walking and seeing beautiful landscapes that I didn't hesitate for long.
Improvisar un camino en la montaña nunca está bien porque puede ser peligroso, por lo que no suelo hacer esto. Sin embargo, en esa oportunidad éramos 5 personas y todos tomamos la decisión de tomar esa otra ruta. En el mapa se veía bien marcada y supusimos que no tendríamos problema. Este nuevo camino incluia pasar por un filo de montaña, ascender hasta la cima del Cerro Negro, bajar por la cima del Cerro Verde y pasar por las Lagunas Gemelas, antes de volver a descender hasta la Ruta 3. Sonaba muy aventurero y yo estaba tan ansiosa por seguir caminando y viendo paisajes hermosos que lo dudé muy poco.

The alternative route was quite good until it suddenly became quite difficult due to loose rocks. It was clear that it was not a well-travelled path and in reality it was not very well marked, so we had to take each step carefully. My companions that day weren't so patient with this, and the first thing they did was give up on climbing to the top of Cerro Negro: they argued that it was better to start the descent slowly to avoid the rocky area. For my part, I was doing very well, so I continued alone with the original plan. The summit was not far away, and I knew I could meet up with them later, so for the second time that day, I made a critical decision on the mountain.
El camino alternativo estuvo bastante bien hasta que en un momento empezó a volverse bastante complicado debido a la piedra suelta. Se notaba que no era un sendero muy transitado y en la vida real no estaba tan marcado, por lo que había que dar cada paso con cuidado. Mis acompañantes de ese día no tuvieron tanta paciencia con esto y lo primero que hicieron fue renunciar a subir hasta la cima del Cerro Negro: argumentaron que era mejor emprender la bajada de a poco para tener que evitar la zona de piedras. Por mi parte lo estaba llevando muy bien, así que continué sola con el plan original. La cima no estaba muy lejos y sabía que podría reencontrarme con ellos más adelante, así que por segunda vez en el día tomé una decisión crítica en la montaña.

Just as I thought, this detour didn't take me that long, although I admit it was quite tiring because I did it as quickly as I could and there was still quite a steep incline. But when I finally reached the top, I was surprised to find that from there I could see almost the entire Lago Escondido. This lake can be seen a little from Paso Garibaldi and when passing by on the road, but from this high altitude, the view was incredible. I stayed there for a long time looking at this landscape because I couldn't believe it, it was too beautiful ❤️.
Tal cual lo que yo pensaba, este desvío no me tomó tanto tiempo, aunque admito que fue bastante cansador porque lo hice lo más rápido que pude y todavía tenía bastante desnivel. Pero, cuando finalmente llegué a la cima, me encontré con la sorpresa que desde ahí se podía ver el Lago Escondido casi en su totalidad. Este lago es uno que puede verse un poco desde el Paso Garibaldi y al pasar por la ruta, pero desde esta altura tan elevada, la vista era increíble. Me quedé un buen rato ahí mirando este paisaje porque no lo podía creer, era demasiado hermoso ❤️.

Although it was a beautiful day and there were still several hours of daylight left, dusk soon arrived, and I had to begin my descent to rejoin the rest of my team before nightfall. This time, the descent was much easier than the ascent, and I was able to find them quickly just before seeing Cerro Verde and the Twin Lagoons. To our surprise, these last two lagoons were not natural lagoons, but permanent beaver dams. Even on the last day, I was surprised by the strong impact these animals had on the landscape of Ushuaia.
A pesar de que el día estaba hermoso y que el día aún tenía bastantes horas de luz, el atardecer no tardó en llegar y yo tenía que emprender mi bajada para reencontrarme con el resto de mi equipo antes de que se hiciera de noche. En esta oportunidad, bajar fue bastante más fácil que subir y pude encontrarlos rápido justo antes de ver el Cerro Verde y las Lagunas Gemelas. Para nuestra sorpresa, estas últimas dos lagunas no eran lagunas naturales, sino que eran represas permanentes de castores. Hasta el último día me sorprendí por el fuerte impacto de estos animales en el paisaje de Ushuaia.

By the time we finished completing this alternative route, my step counter had already clocked up more than 15 km. The last stretch found us a little tired and we didn't feel like dodging the peat, so we returned with all our feet wet. That said, we may have misinterpreted the map and the concept of a ‘circular route’ a little, because when we got down to the road and wanted to see where the car was, it was about 2 kilometres away. Well, a little trekking on the hard shoulder wasn't too bad either.
Para cuando terminamos de completar esta ruta alternativa, mi contador de pasos ya marcaba más de 15 km. El último tramo nos encontró un poco cansados y no tuvimos muchas ganas de esquivar la turba, por lo que volvimos con todos los pies mojados. A todo esto, quizás interpretamos un poco mal el mapa y el concepto de "ruta circular", porque cuando bajamos a la ruta y quisimos ver en donde estaba el auto, nos había quedado como a 2 kilómetros. Bueno, un poco de trekking en la banquina tampoco estuvo mal.

Many times I can't believe everything I did in Ushuaia, but I'm very happy to have made the most of my stay from start to finish. I was able to do almost all the treks I wanted to do, and although there will always be some left pending, my list is pretty complete. Lago Escondido in Ushuaia is a very traditional lake visited by tourists in Paso Garibaldi, but surely not everyone has this aerial view, not even my companions, even though they were so close. At that moment, I was glad for my slightly irresponsible but exploratory personality:
since everything turned out well, I congratulate myself for taking the risk ❤️.
Muchas veces no puedo creer todo lo que hice en Ushuaia, pero estoy muy contenta de haber aprovechado mi estadía de principio a fin. Pude hacer casi todos los trekkings que quería, y aunque siempre van a quedar algunos pendientes, mi lista está bastante completa. El Lago Escondido de Ushuaia es uno muy tradicional y visitado por los turistas en el Paso Garibaldi, pero seguramente no todo el mundo tiene esta vista aérea, ni siquiera mis acompañantes aún habiendo estado tan cerca. En ese momento, me alegré por mi personalidad un poco irresponsable pero exploradora: como todo salió bien, me felicito por haber tomado el riesgo ❤️.
