During my stay in Ushuaia, we did a ton of great things. We often went trekking and other times we went for a day trip around the city, but without a doubt my favorite activity was enjoying the mountains and the beautiful scenery. One afternoon I spent with my new Couchsurfing friends, we went for a walk to a new place we hadn't been to before. Taking advantage of the fact that my friend Naty and I had rented a car, we invited the others to enjoy a waterfall 25 km outside the city.
It was Cascada del Viento, a waterfall that took us a while to find, but when we did, we were amazed by its beauty ❤️.
Durante mi estadía en Ushuaia hicimos un montón de cosas geniales. Muchas veces fuimos de trekking y otras veces fuimos a pasear durante el día en la ciudad, pero sin dudas mi actividad favorita era ir a disfrutar de las montañas y de los paisajes hermosos. En una de las tardes compartidas con mis nuevos amigos de Couchsurfing, fuimos a pasear a un nuevo lugar que no conocíamos hasta entonces. Aprovechando que habíamos alquilado el auto con mi amiga Naty, invitamos a los demás a disfrutar de una cascada que quedaba a 25 km en las afueras de la ciudad. Se trataba de la Cascada del Viento, una que nos costó un poco encontrar pero cuando lo hicimos nos quedamos asombrados por su belleza ❤️.

After so much time in Ushuaia, it was becoming increasingly difficult to find a new place to visit. However, this part of the map in southern Argentina has so many things to see that you'd never run out of new places to discover. On one of our weekends renting a car, we wanted to take advantage of it to go to a distant place that we couldn't reach by other means. Hitchhiking was something we did from time to time, but since most tourists generally only go as far as Laguna Esmeralda, it's very difficult to get beyond that point with this type of transportation.
Después de tanto tiempo en Ushuaia cada vez era más difícil encontrar un lugar nuevo al que ir a visitar. Sin embargo, esta parte del mapa en el sur de Argentina tiene tantas cosas para ver que nunca podrías quedarte sin un rincón nuevo para descubrir. En uno de nuestros fines de semana alquilando el auto queríamos aprovecharlo para ir a un lugar lejos y al que no pudiéramos llegar con otros métodos. "Hacer dedo" era algo que hacíamos de vez en cuando, pero como casi todos los turistas generalmente solo van hasta la hasta la Laguna Esmeralda, es muy difícil llegar más allá con este tipo de transporte.

Naty had some ideas for new places to visit: she was just as adventurous as I was, and that's why we got along so well. During one of these walks, she suggested visiting a waterfall she had read in a trekking manual she had at home. This little book described the 25 best places to visit in Ushuaia and included many trails we had already done, but of course, there were still a few left to do. One of them was the one that took you to the Cascada del Viento, describing it as a simple but interesting trek that could be done in half a day.
Naty tenía algunas ideas de lugares nuevos para ir a visitar: ella era igual de aventurera que yo, y por eso nos llevábamos tan bien. Durante uno de estos paseos ella propuso ir a visitar una cascada que había leído en un manual de trekkings que tenía en su casa. Este pequeño libro que describía cuáles eran los 25 mejores lugares para visitar en Ushuaia y tenía muchos senderos que nosotros ya habíamos hecho, pero por supuesto, todavía quedaban algunos por delante. Uno de ellos era aquel que te llevaba hasta la Cascada del Viento, describiéndolo como un trekking sencillo pero interesante como para hacer en medio día.

To get to the trailhead to Cascada del Viento, we had to drive (well, Naty had to drive) to the entrance to Cerro Castor. This spot is one of the busiest in winter, as it's the peak where most of the city's skiing activity is concentrated. But since it was summer, just beginning fall, there was no snow yet, so the place was desolate and inactive. A few meters to the side of the ski resort's information center, we found a sign pointing to the trail we were looking for. As we had read, it was a short hike that we could complete in less than two hours. This plan seemed a bit short at first, and we thought we would finish it easily, but that wasn't the case because we encountered some technical issues along the way.
Para dirigirnos hacia el inicio del sendero camino a la Cascada del Viento tuvimos que manejar (bueno, Naty tuvo que manejar) hasta la entrada del Cerro Castor. Este lugar es uno de los más concurridos en invierno, ya que se trata de el cerro en donde se concentra casi toda la actividad de esquí de la ciudad. Pero como era verano, apenas empezando el otoño, todavia no había nada de nieve, así que el lugar estaba desolado y sin actividad. Algunos metros al costado del centro de informes del centro de esquí encontramos el cartel indicativo con la señalización hacia el sendero que buscábamos. Como habíamos leído, se trataba de un trekking corto que en menos de dos horas podríamos completar. Este plan parecía un poco corto al principio y pensamos que lo íbamos a terminar fácilmente, pero no fue así porque tuvimos algunos problemas técnicos durante el recorrido.

Being a ski resort, but during the thawed season, the trail was filled with peat, the typical soil of the valleys of Ushuaia. Peat is a system that turns the soil into a damp sponge, so you have to be very careful with each step because your feet can sink in and easily get wet. We spent much of the trail dodging the peat and trying to keep our feet firm. As we continued on our way, chatting and gossiping, we realized that more than an hour had passed and we still had no sign of the waterfall. Unfortunately, none of us had a signal, so we couldn't even find the waterfall we wanted to see. It was a tense moment, and as a group, we had to decide what to do: whether to continue forward without finding the waterfall or to turn back to see if we had gotten lost along the way.
Al ser un centro de esquí pero en su época descongelada, el sendero estaba lleno de turba, el típico suelo de los valles de Ushuaia. La turba es un sistema que convierte el suelo en una esponja húmeda, entonces hay que tener mucho cuidado con cada pisada porque puedes hundirte los pies y mojarte fácilmente. Gran parte del sendero lo pasamos esquivando la turba y tratando de dar pisadas firmes. Mientras seguíamos nuestro camino charlando y cotilleando, nos dimos cuenta de que había pasado más de una hora y todavía no teníamos ni rastros de la cascada. Lamentablemente ninguno de nosotros tenía señal así que ni siquiera podíamos encontrar en dónde estaba el salto de agua que queríamos ver. Fue un momento de tensión y en donde como grupo tuvimos que decir qué hacer: si continuar hacia adelante sin encontrar la cascada o si retroceder para ver si nos habíamos perdido en el camino.

Luckily, our group decision was unanimous, and we retraced our steps. It seemed strange to us that we had walked so far and still hadn't reached the waterfall, and indeed, we had taken the wrong path. It turned out that during our lively conversation, we had missed one of the signs on one of the trees indicating that we should turn right. When we managed to find the right path and took that detour, the waterfall was just a few meters ahead. Since it was hidden by the tall trees in the forest, we hadn't seen it as we drove by, but this waterfall was very tall and beautiful. It was quite hidden in the vegetation, but I'm glad we found it in the end ❤️.
Por suerte, nuestra decisión grupal fue unánime y volvimos sobre nuestros pasos. Nos parecía raro haber caminado tanto y todavía no haber llegado a la cascada y efectivamente, nos habíamos confundido el camino. Resultó que durante nuestra charla tan animada nos habíamos perdido una de las señalizaciones en uno de los árboles que indicaba que debíamos doblar hacia la derecha. Cuando logramos encontrar el camino correcto y tomamos ese desvío, la cascada se encontraba apenas unos metros más adelante. Como estaba tapada por los altos árboles del bosque no la habíamos visto al pasar, pero esta cascada era muy alta y hermosa. Estaba bastante escondida entre la vegetación, pero me alegra que al final la hayamos encontrado ❤️.

The guys and I stayed at the waterfall for a while, first having our somewhat improvised lunch, since each of us had brought a few things, like hard-boiled eggs, crackers, some tomato, and even olives, and then we did a great photo shoot. This small Couchsurfing group made up of Naty, Tali, Edgar, and I was the group of my most stable friends in Ushuaia. They had long stays, like me, and planned to stay until the end of the summer, so we made several outings and get-togethers together. To this day, we all stay in touch: some are still traveling and others have already returned home to work,
but the memories of having seen such beautiful places in Ushuaia will never be forgotten ❤️.
Los chicos y yo nos quedamos un buen rato en la cascada, primero tomando nuestro almuerzo algo improvisado, ya que cada uno había llevado un poco de cosas, como huevos duros galletitas un poco de tomate y hasta aceitunas, y después nos hicimos una gran sesión de fotos. Este pequeño grupo de Couchsurfing conformado por Naty, Tali, Edgar y yo fue el grupo de mis amigos más estables en Ushuaia. Ellos tenían estadías largas el igual que yo y planeaban quedarse hasta el fin del verano, por lo que hicimos varias salidas y reuniones juntos. Hasta el día de hoy todos seguimos en contacto: algunos siguen viajando y otros ya volvieron a sus casas a trabajar, pero los recuerdos de haber visto lugares tan hermosos en Ushuaia nunca serán olvidados ❤️.
