For those of us who live in the upper half of Argentina, having the chance to see some snow is always very special. In Buenos Aires, where I live, it's extremely rare to see snow, and in fact, it's been 17 years since it last snowed. But my stay in
Ushuaia gave me a very special memory: being able to see what snowfall is like in the city.
While I'd seen snow in the mountains many times, seeing the urban area covered in snow was a memorable experience ❤️.
Para aquellos que nos toca vivir de la mitad de Argentina para arriba, tener la posibilidad de ver algo de nieve siempre es muy especial. En Buenos Aires en donde yo vivo es rarísimo que caiga nieve y, de hecho, ya se han cumplido 17 años desde la última vez que nevó. Pero mi estadía en Ushuaia me regaló un recuerdo muy especial: poder ver cómo es una nevada en la ciudad. Si bien ya había visto nieve en las montañas muchas veces, ver la zona urbana con nieve fue una experiencia memorable ❤️.

Despite arriving in October, it wasn't until early April that snow appeared in the lower part of the city. It was precisely on the night of April 1st that the snow began to fall, a very opportune moment since we were all gathered in the main square for the April 2nd commemoration, the Day of the Fallen in the Malvinas Islands War in 1982. At midnight on that day, a commemorative ceremony was held and the city flag was replaced with a new one, a very emotional day in the history of our country.
A pesar de haber llegado en Octubre, no fue hasta el principio de Abril que apareció la nieve en la zona baja de la ciudad. Precisamente, el primer día de Abril por la noche empezaron las nevadas, un momento muy oportuno ya que todos estábamos reunidos en la plaza principal por motivo del acto del 2 de Abril, día de los Caídos por la Guerra de las Islas Malvinas en 1982. En la medianoche de ese día, se realiza un acto conmemorativo y se cambia la bandera de la ciudad por una nueva, en una jornada muy emotiva para la historia de nuestro país.

After snowing all night, the next day the snow had covered the entire city in a beautiful white blanket. Autumn was already in the air, and it was freezing cold at the end of the world, but everyone went out to explore downtown and enjoy the snow. By then, my foot was sprained, and the pain was quite unbearable, but I still walked the 10 blocks to the waterfront to see what everything looked like.
Después de haber estado nevando toda la noche, al día siguiente la nieve había cubierto toda la ciudad con una hermosa capa blanca. El otoño ya se sentía y hacía demasiado frío en el fin del mundo, pero todo el mundo salió a recorrer el centro y disfrutar de la nieve. Para ese momento, yo tenía el pie esguinzado y el dolor era bastante insoportable, pero igualmente caminé las 10 cuadras hasta la costanera para ver cómo se veía todo.

Seeing the surroundings covered in snow was magical: until then, I had never seen snow in this part of the city, not even during my first visit in 2023. Everything looked quite different, despite the same places I frequently visited. The snowfall had been heavy enough to form a white landscape, but according to the hostel owner, everything would probably be melted again by the next day.
Ver todos los alrededores nevados fue algo mágico: hasta el momento, yo nunca había visto la nieve en esta parte de la ciudad, ni siquiera durante mi primera visita de 2023. Todo se veía bastante diferente, a pesar de ser los mismos lugares que visitaba frecuentemente. Knowing this, I rushed downtown even more so, despite my broken foot. I had to walk very carefully, because the snow brought with it a lot of ice accumulated on the sidewalks. I swear I took every step carefully and even played in the snow with my friend, but I couldn't avoid something they say all Ushuaians experience at least once a year: slipping on the street. That's right, I treacherously stepped on an icy ramp and fell, twisting the same foot that had been hurt before. Thanks to the painkillers I had taken before leaving, things didn't get any worse, but I couldn't stop laughing at how clumsy I was.
Sabiendo eso, con más razón me apuré en ir al centro a pesar de mi pie roto. Tuve que ir caminando con mucho cuidado, porque la nieve trajo consigo mucho hielo acumulado en las veredas. Les juro que daba cada paso con cuidado e incluso jugué en la nieve con mi amiga, pero no pude evitarme algo que dicen que todos los Ushuaianos viven al menos una vez por año: resbalarse en la calle. Así es, traicioneramente pisé una rampa congelada y me caí, doblandome el mismo pie que tenía lastimado desde antes. Por efecto de los calmantes que había tomado antes de salir esto no pasó a mayores, pero no podía dejar de reirme de lo torpe que fui.

Not even the fall could dampen my good mood while walking through the snow. Even during our afternoon walk, a little snow fell again. All the tourists were very excited about this: they because they had experienced a surprise snowfall earlier in the fall, and I because after waiting patiently for six months, I was finally seeing snow in the city. Snow in the mountains is beautiful, but seeing it down there also made the experience even more enjoyable.
Ni siquiera la caída logró alterar mi buen humor caminando entre la nieve. Incluso, durante nuestro paseo de la tarde volvió a caer un poco de nieve. Todos los turistas estabamos muy emocionados con esto: ellos porque habían tenido una nevada sorpresiva a principios de otoño, y yo porque después de esperar pacientemente seis meses, al fin veía nieve en la ciudad. La nieve en las montañas es hermosa, pero verla ahí abajo también complementó aún más la experiencia.

Since it was still April 2nd, the events for Memorial Day were still ongoing. A museum had been set up in the plaza with images alluding to the war, and there was an army display offering hot chocolate and fried cakes. This was to show people a glimpse of what the veterans unfortunately endured in that war while defending our islands. Fortunately, Argentina has not been involved in another war since 1982, and I hope it remains that way for a long time to come.
Como todavía era 2 de Abril, aún continuaban los eventos por el día de los Caídos de la Guerra. En la plaza se había montado un museo con imágenes alusivas a la historia, y había un despliegue del ejército que ofrecía chocolatada caliente y tortas fritas. Esto era para mostrar a la gente un poco de lo que los veteranos lamentablemente tuvieron que vivir en esa guerra por defender nuestras islas. Afortunadamente, desde 1982 a la actualidad Argentina no volvió a estar involucrada en un conflicto bélico y espero que siga siendo así por mucho tiempo más.

Our walk extended along the entire waterfront, where we were able to get some great views of the imposing snow-capped mountains. I was so happy to finally have seen the city this way, and it was all the more special because I only had a week left before I had to return home. The timing was perfect for me, as it snowed just in time for me to see it. Speaking with my friends who stayed behind, they found that after the snowfall in early April, there wasn't another like it until July, when winter began: that made me feel even luckier.
Nuestra caminata se extendió por toda la costanera, en donde pudimos tener unas buenas vistas de las imponentes montañas nevadas. Yo me sentía muy feliz por al fin haber visto la ciudad de este modo, y todo fue aún más especial para mí porque solo faltaba una semana para que tuviera que volver a casa. Hubo un timing perfecto para mí, en donde nevó justo a tiempo para que yo pudiera verlo. Hablando con mis amigas que quedaron viviendo allá, después de la nevada de principios de Abril no volvió a haber otra como esa sino hasta Julio cuando empezó el invierno: eso me hizo sentir aún más afortunada.

Before this day, I was leaving Ushuaia somewhat saddened by the lack of snowfall, but this changed everything. I had even said I'd have to return in the winter to see it, but this ended up fulfilling my wish on my long trip. I think everything during this stay didn't go incredibly well, and even the weather was on my side of the travel adventure.
Now I can truly say I've seen everything there was to see at the end of the world, and my travel journal is completely complete ❤️.
Antes de este día, me estaba yendo de Ushuaia con algo de pena por no haber visto nevar, pero esto lo cambió todo. Incluso había dicho que tendría ue volver en invierno para ver la nieve, pero esto terminó de completar mi deseo dentro de mi mismo viaje largo. Creo que todo en esta estadía no surgió increíblemente bien, y hasta el clima me acompañó en mi aventura viajera. Ahora sí que puedo decir que he visto todo lo que podía ver el en fin del mundo, y mi diario de viaje está completo del todo ❤️.
