The weather forecast was not at all accurate in **Ushuaia**, so sometimes we had to take a chance and rent a car, hoping for a good day to go sightseeing. Sometimes we had to go out in bad weather just to justify the expense, but one of the last times we rented a car, the plan worked out perfectly. It was a sunny day and not too cold, even though autumn had already begun, so we definitely needed to do something. Besides, it was my day off from volunteering, and there was no way I was going to stay cooped up inside 😅.
El pronóstico del tiempo no era para nada preciso en Ushuaia, por lo que a veces nos tocaba arriesgarnos a alquilar el auto esperando tener un buen día como para ir a pasear. A veces nos tocó salir con mal clima con tal de justificar el gasto, pero en una de las últimas veces que lo alquilamos, el plan salió a la perfección. Era un día con un sol radiante y no tanto frío a pesar de que el otoño ya había empezado, por lo que si o sí necesitábamos hacer algo. Además, era mi día libre del voluntariado y de ninguna manera me iba a quedar encerrada 😅.

I lost count of how many times Naty and I rented the car for the weekend, but paying £50 a day for it and being able to go anywhere was much more convenient than relying on Uber or hitchhiking. What's more, this arrangement ended up being very cost-effective, as we always found more people to fill the remaining seats and split the cost between us all. After a while, we were almost like local guides, spending our time meeting tourists and taking them on trips.
Perdí la cuenta de las veces que Naty y yo alquilamos el auto por el fin de semana, pero pagar $50 por día por él y poder ir a cualquier lado era mucho más cómodo que depender del Uber o hacer dedo. Además, este negocio terminaba siendo muy rentable, ya que siempre encontrábamos más gente para llenar los lugares sobrantes y repartir el gasto entre todos. Después de un tiempo, ya éramos casi guías locales y nos pasamos conociendo turistas y llevándolos a pasear.

On one of our weekends with nothing specific planned, we invited three guests from the hostel to come along for a walk with us. We told them we didn't know where we were going, but they accepted anyway because they trusted us to take them somewhere nice. And of course we did, because for this trip we decided on the spur of the moment to head to the
Paso Garibaldi area, with the intention of completing a medium-difficulty trek to Laguna de los Perros (spoiler: it ended up costing us more than we thought) 😅.
En uno de nuestros fines de semana sin nada tan precisamente planeado, invitamos a tres huéspedes del hostel a ir a pasear con nosotras. Les dijimos que no sabíamos a donde iríamos, pero igualmente aceptaron porque confiaron en que los llevaríamos a un buen lugar. Y por supuesto así fue, porque para este paseo elegimos ir improvisadamente hacia la zona del Paso Garibaldi, con la intención de completar un trekking de dificultad media hacia la Laguna de los Perros (spoiler: terminó costándonos más de lo que creíamos) 😅.

Before heading straight to the trailhead, we stopped to take in the scenery from this spot. They have built a viewpoint here where you can enjoy a great view of Lago Escondido. There are always lots of people there, and that day was no exception. What's more, the weather was incredible, and many people like us wanted to make the most of it. The last time we had passed through that area, more than 40 km from the city of Ushuaia, we hadn't been able to see anything because of the thick fog on our way to Tolhuin, so having another chance to go was great (and I was also able to stick my Worldmappin sticker on).
Antes de ir directamente al inicio del sendero, hicimos una parada para ver el paisaje que hay desde este lugar. En él han construido un mirador desde donde se puede tener una gran vista del Lago Escondido. Siempre hay mucha gente ahí, y ese día no fue la excepción. Además, el clima estaba increíble y muchos como nosotros querían aprovecharlo. La última vez que habíamos pasado por esa zona, a más de 40 km de la ciudad de Ushuaia, no habíamos poder ver nada por la gran niebla que había en nuestro camino a Tolhuin, por lo que tener otra oportunidad de ir nos vino bien (y además pude pegar mi sticker de Worldmappin).

As its name suggests, this part of the route crosses a mountain pass, which is why you can enjoy such a wide view of the lake. Its construction is incredible, because it literally seems to break through the mountains to make its way. I don't know how to drive a car yet, but Naty was quite scared to drive through here. I don't blame her: the road looked quite close to the precipice and although it was a bit dangerous, the views were worth it.
Como su nombre lo indica, esta parte de la ruta atraviesa un paso de montaña y por eso se puede tener una vista tan amplia del lago. Su construcción es increíble, porque literalmente parece romper las montañas para abrirse camino. Yo no sé manejar un auto todavía, pero a Naty le daba bastante miedo pasar por acá. No la juzgo: el camino se veía bastante pegado al precipicio y aunque era algo peligroso, esas vistas valían la pena.

El Paso Garibaldi is a place that always surprises you, even if you visit it a thousand times, and I was glad we took the time to visit it once again. On this occasion, our companions in the car enjoyed a sightseeing tour for only £10 per person, which we paid for the car. No travel agency could have found such an inexpensive trip, with transport, a guided tour and trekking included:
should we have charged them more 😂?
El Paso Garibaldi es uno que siempre te sorprende aunque lo visites mil veces, y me gustó habernos tomado el tiempo para visitarlo una vez más. En esta oportunidad, nuestros acompañantes del auto tuvieron un tour turístico por tan solo los $10 por persona que pagamos por el auto. En ninguna agencia de viajes hubiesen encontrado un paseo tan económico, con traslado, visita guiada y trekking incluido: ¿deberíamos haberles cobrado más caro 😂?
