Hive Argentina - The most traditional dance in Argentina? My first time trying Tango was in Ushuaia. / ¿El baile más tradicional de Argentina? Mi primera vez probando Tango fue en Ushuaia. 😃❤️

In all this time spent interacting with tourists I realised that there are many things that they relate to Argentina that I, having been born here, don't even know. First I was surprised by tourist places in Buenos Aires that I had never been to, and on closer inspection, I realised that I had never had any experience of anything related to tango, a dance that everyone expects to see on their way through this part of the map. Perhaps from the outside it may seem that this is something very widespread in our culture, but at least for me, it never seemed so close. So much so that I was only recently able to attend a class of this dance, and I even dared to dance (horribly) a little 😅.

En todo este tiempo relacionándome con turistas me di cuenta de que hay muchas cosas que ellos relacionan con Argentina y que yo, habiendo nacido acá, ni siquiera conozco. Primero me sorprendí con lugares turísticos en Buenos Aires a los que yo nunca fui, e hilando más fino, noté que nunca había tenido ninguna experiencia de nada relacionada con el tango, un baile que todos esperan ver en su paso por esta parte del mapa. Quizás de afuera pueda parecer que esto es algo muy difundido en nuestra cultura, pero al menos para mí, nunca me resultó tan cercano. Tanto fue que recién hace poco pude presenciar una clase de este baile, y hasta me animé a bailar (horriblemente) un poco 😅.

--- --- --- --- My summer stay in Ushuaia was becoming long and entertaining because I was always finding something new to do. Of course I loved going to the mountains and hiking for hours, but every now and then, I felt like trying other things. For this purpose, using the Couchsurfing app was very useful, as they posted a variety of activities to do in the city. From there I met a lot of interesting people, with whom I planned many activities until literally my last day there.

Mi estadía de verano en Ushuaia se estaba haciendo larga y entretenida porque siempre encontraba algo nuevo para hacer. Por supuesto que me encantaba ir a la montaña y caminar durante horas, pero cada tanto, tenía ganas de probar otras cosas. Para este objetivo, usar la aplicación de Couchsurfing fue muy útil, ya que ahí publicaban actividades variadas para hacer en la ciudad. De ahí conocí a mucha gente interesante, con la que planeé muchas actividades hasta literalmente mi último día por ahí.

--- --- It was a quiet Sunday when I was bored in the hostel and I went on Couchsurfing to see what there was to do. That's how I found out about a free tango class in the afternoon which, looking at the map, was only a few blocks away from where I was. It sounded interesting, but I didn't want to go alone, so I invited my new volunteer partner to go together. His name is Iuri and he had just arrived from his country Brazil a few days ago, so the idea of doing something local Argentinean delighted him.

Era un domingo tranquilo, cuando estaba aburrida en el hostel y entré a Couchsurfing para ver qué había para hacer. Así me enteré sobre una clase gratis de tango por la tarde que, revisando el mapa, quedaba solo a unas cuadras de donde estaba yo. Sonaba interesante, pero no quería ir sola, así que invité a mi nuevo compañero voluntario a ir juntos. Su nombre es Iuri y había llegado de su país Brasil hacía apenas unos días, por lo que la idea de hacer algo local argentino le encantó.

--- --- This class was a continuation of some previous classes attended mostly by neighbours. In total, the class lasted two hours: during the first hour, the teachers taught us a basic step and in the other hour, there was music to dance to freely. Many people already knew each other, but Iuri and I were the new ones, so the teachers paid a lot of attention to us. I think dancing tango is a very romantic thing to do as you dance very close to your partner, with an almost seductive connection, so at first I was quite shy to try it but after a while I relaxed a little bit more.

Esta clase se trataba de una seguidilla de algunas clases anteriores a donde asistían más que nada vecinos. En total, la clase duró dos horas: durante la primera, los profesores nos enseñaron un paso básico y en la otra hora, había música para bailar libremente. Mucha gente ya se conocía, pero Iuri y yo éramos los nuevos así que los profesores nos pusieron bastante atención. Pienso que bailar tango es algo muy romántico ya que se baila muy cercano a tu pareja, con una conexión casi seductora, por lo que al principio me daba bastante vergüenza intentarlo pero un rato después me relajé un poco más.

--- --- Although Tango is a very beautiful dance and the staging of the professional competitions is incredible, my personal perception is that this dance is not so widespread among the younger generations. This dance is not even taught a little bit in schools, unlike other traditional dances that we have in Argentina, like for example the chacarera. Nowadays, at least I associate tango with my grandparents, who listened to it and, from what my parents told me, danced it too. But during your trip to my country don't expect the majority of the population to listen or dance Tango: to enjoy a bit more of it, you will have to look for a specific show or a private lesson like this one.

Si bien el Tango es un baile muy hermoso y las puestas en escena de las competencias profesionales son increíbles, mi percepción personal es que este no es un baile tan difundido entre las generaciones más jóvenes. Este baile ni siquiera se enseña un poco en las escuelas, a diferencia de otros bailes tradicionales que tenemos en Argentina, como por ejemplo la chacarera. Actualmente, al menos yo asocio el tango a mis abuelos, quienes si lo escuchaban y por lo que me contaron mis padres, también lo bailaban. Pero durante tu viaje a mi país no esperes que la mayoría de la población escuche o baile Tango: para disfrutar un poco más de esto, tocará buscar un show específico o una clase privada como esta.

--- --- Regarding my own personal experience trying to dance Tango, I must say that I think I did horribly. This dance requires a lot of technique and coordination with your partner, something that of course in one hour I was not going to master, but I was happy to have tried. After this class I would like to see a professional Tango show, because seeing the teachers dance together with a high mastery of this dance left me wanting more. Surely this will add to the tourist things I have to do in Buenos Aires: a long list that keeps growing with many interesting things to do 💕.

Respecto a mi propia experiencia personal intentando bailar Tango, debo decir que creo que lo hice horrible. Este baile requiere mucha técnica y coordinación con tu acompañante, algo que por supuesto en una hora no iba a dominar, pero me puso feliz haberlo intentando. Después de esta clase me gustaría ver un show profesional de Tango, porque ver a los profesores bailar juntos con un alto dominio de esta danza me dejaron ganas de más. Seguramente esto se sume a las cosas turísticas que tengo que hacer en Buenos Aires: una larga lista que sigue creciendo con muchas cosas interesantes para hacer 💕.
