Hello, how are you? Last week, I decided to make a sketchbook dedicated to my oil pastels, and sadly, I forgot to document the process because I feel overwhelmed about it LOL. Because last time I made a sketchbook, it became like my note-taking, sketchbook, oil pastels book, and everything! So I decided to make a sketchbook for the specific medium I am going to use, and I feel more confident and free to draw anything on it. By the way, I really like drawing sunflowers in any kind of medium, but I really love drawing them using oil pastels. So I am going to show you how I draw a sunflower using oil pastels. -----
Materials I Used:
![0.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/leannwithdoublen/EoK8kjheBgcvyVBvQeryWcBDVFSrHKmDVoazxNMXq3Yf7VbWXQwBrAT3ycFqFSwrX5T.JPG)
  • Oil Pastel
  • Sketchbook
  • Reference
  • Scratching Tool
-----
Let's Draw!

![2.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/leannwithdoublen/EoK8jJWcuvrMg6KWe8whrriidD6qLMjVgp63DrBWXX2jqyX218MU6BRd3wdVkZnRbL1.JPG)
I like to start with the basic shape of the reference so that I know where it is when I'm finishing it with line art. After that, when I am satisfied with the proportion, I am going to layer with more detailed line art. -----

![4.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/leannwithdoublen/EoCkXixuihvgfqVZD7Ksd7iaoyp3DMzaVL7doJ2AwdhpZ2gsRKDjrRLFG7bZ6J2CZUW.JPG)
I like to start with a darker color and the bottom part of the reference. I used to layer it as hard as I could, but I decided to experiment to do it lightly this time, and I think it works! -----
![5.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/leannwithdoublen/EoK8jJQxVcjDPXNieexXAZT6a7PLKkquHw6TqjpH9Dc74QjowMW9aBqXK9KqxTMSw7N.JPG)

And do the same thing on the other part of the reference, and I feel like it is not enough, so I layer it with darker shades. -----
![7.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/leannwithdoublen/EopvL1kNZwjKEykbTds73WejzMRrYts3SVQezSyjW4m477FZDzaaGY4pzKDGvfRBvF4.JPG)

For this part of the process, I start adding lighter shades to the reference, and I think it is becoming more like the reference. I start adding color to the background too. -----

Then I added more intense shadows, and I rendered the background too, which made me see which part I am going to fix first. -----

For this part, I added more shadows because previously something was missing about so I guess I am correct adding more intense shadows makes it more dimensional. -----

This is what it looks like in zoomed in. I like how the way it turned out, and I guess I am going to use this technique in the future with oil pastels. -----

I like to finish it off with a scratch to make texture and highlights at the same time. And the same time, I finish it with a lighter color for the highlight too. ----- ![21.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/leannwithdoublen/EouAAqCbYte9W5gtNU1ZGZyNR2Mz49aa6ZGxKeY3epV9eoWFUVHZMfs6Q28ojKdnecC.JPG) The new technique I did was successful and I think I am going to apply this to my future oil pastel arts tooo!!!! ----- ![19.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/leannwithdoublen/23xVTp5UYgkmeA2y3j3Yz47dstNo2Yj7C5Tw9nKeCPW7xaGXy649zgJLnWoRm1qLAEEgN.JPG) Close up for a better look. :D ----
