The Drastic Social Change That Comes With Success

Success is a funny thing, it can change people in ways you won’t even expect. Sometimes power and money can make a person act different, even the ones you were sure will never change. I’ve come to see that once some people make it, their attitude towards others no longer remain the same

I have experienced this before. A friend of mine that we use to do everything together, once he got a good job and things started moving well for him, I noticed he was no longer picking my calls like before. At first I thought maybe he was really busy, you know how life can get when someone is trying to set themselves up. But later it became too constant. Sorry I didn’t see your call, or, I’ve been too busy. That kind of excuse. Meanwhile you know he actually saw the calls. That’s when you start asking yourself if this is the same person that once ate garri with you when things were rough

The feeling is not a good one at all. It feels like betrayal in a way, especially when you remember the times you both struggled together, sharing the little you had. It makes you wonder how success can change someone’s heart like that. But again, I also think sometimes people don’t even know they are changing. Success just puts them in another world entirely and before they know it, the bond they once had with people starts to fade

For me, I felt hurt, but at the same time it opened my eyes. It made me realize not to depend too much on people, because human beings can change at any time. I told myself to just focus on my own growth and stop waiting for someone else to carry me along. Life turns, today you might be the one struggling and tomorrow it might be your turn to shine

I also asked myself, have I ever done the same thing? To be honest, maybe not intentionally, but there are times I have been so carried away with my own hustle that I forgot to check up on people. It’s not that I was looking down on them, but sometimes you get so busy trying to maintain what you’ve achieved that you unconsciously ignore people who once mattered to you. That’s why I try now to balance things, because I know how it feels when you are the one being ignored

At the end of the day, success should not make us strangers to those who once stood with us. Money, position, all these things are not permanent. What lasts longer is true friendship and relationship, and we shouldn’t allow pride or I have made it attitude to spoil it
