Just 6 kilometres outside the picturesque town of Franschhoek lies La Motte Wine Estate, a peaceful haven combining Cape Winelands beauty, heritage charm, and culinary excellence. Our recent visit felt like stepping into a thoughtfully curated postcard—each detail crafted to delight the senses.

La Motte’s history dates back to 1695, when the land was granted to German immigrant Hans Heinrich Hattingh. A few years later, in 1709, it was purchased by French Huguenot Pierre Joubert, who named it after his hometown in Provence—La Motte-d’Aigues. With roots stretching over three centuries, the estate has grown into one of South Africa’s most distinguished wine farms.

In the 1970s, it was revitalised under the stewardship of Dr. Anton Rupert, whose family still manages the estate today with a deep focus on conservation, heritage, and sustainability. (From the La Motte website)

Brunch at the Bakery Our first stop was the Bakery & Garden Café, housed in the charming Jonkershuis. This welcoming space, surrounded by shady oaks and flowering gardens, is perfect for a laid-back brunch. We ordered the Eggs Benedict—and it was superb. Perfectly poached free-range eggs, velvety hollandaise, and crisp bacon were served on freshly baked brioche. The attention to quality and flavour was unmistakable.

Exploring the Estate After brunch, we strolled around the beautifully maintained grounds. The estate is dotted with old oak trees, art sculptures, and tranquil walkways, all inviting you to slow down and soak up the atmosphere. We came across the wine tasting area, where guests were enjoying curated tastings in a stylish space overlooking the vineyards. While we didn’t participate ourselves this time, it’s certainly a place we’d return to for a future wine experience.

Boutique Shopping Delights La Motte is more than just a wine farm—it’s also a lifestyle destination. We explored the honey shop, where locally produced honey was beautifully packaged and presented. Next door, the gift store offered elegant homeware, handmade ceramics, books, and keepsakes. There was also a farm store stocked with fresh fruit, charcuterie, preserves, and artisan breads—a treasure trove of gourmet treats.
