Splinterlands just released a new "Extra" card, the Arena Fanatic. That's right, not a promo, but a new edition of cards, labeled "Extra", as if they were too shy to call it a promo card, and you can't really blame them since this card is pretty bad. In fact, it is meant to be earned for free while watching Twitch streamers, through the Twitch drop system. I linked twitch to a different game but never ended up using it to get drops. I don't watch Twitch and I don't feel like watching 15 hours for a few thousand glint and a single copy of the card (out of 115 bcx for a max copy). However, some will do it and are already doing it. The first copies are reaching the market at a price point of 6$, which is totally unsustainable and will come down pretty fast.
This card looks fairly useless at first glance, which is why I will probably never buy it on the market even if the price comes down. It doesn't seem like a good rental either. In fact it looks just one step removed from a Foundation card, but one that can't be played in Foundation mode, which makes it almost entirely irrelevant. It's two ranged damage for five mana is not competitive at all in the meta, and only bringing an Amplify isn't going to cut it. This card should have been usable in Foundation mode, but even there it falls short when it's at silver level, only gaining an edge at later levels. The only true selling point of this card is its four armor along with six health points, which makes it relatively tanky, but if the point is to have a tanky ranged unit, there are better options out there, some of them being reward cards that can be earned for free right now.
For comparables, I brought out some Foundation cards to illustrate my point. At silver level, it is inferior to the Hungry Ulund in terms of damage, with only one more armor point to show for it. Spitting Camel brings True Strike and two damage, and Ash Archer brings four speed and two damage. Arena Fanatic only brings one damage at that level, and no abilities whatsoever, with two speed.
To conclude, this card is not very exciting, even if it can be gained for "free". Of course, anyone wanting to max out this card will have to buy the extra copies to level it up, making it therefore not "free", but rather a gimmick to draw people's attention to Twitch with the promise of so-called rewards. Still, there is nothing wrong with giving out a card like this, but if you were hoping to get me excited, then you should have made it stronger. Just my two cents.
