Greeting Readers

Apologies for only one update last week. Friday was my birthday, and I was so busy. I didn't even turn on my pc.

Anyway, please enjoy the update.

Mitis sank into herself and refused to make eye contact with the shaman until Kay returned with everything they would need, including a few filled waterskins.

“Three hours. No more, and you walk her back to the village. Do I make myself clear?” said Silens sharply.

Kay nodded, then headed out the door without a word spoken. Mitis joined her quickly, taking two strides for every three of Kay’s. The pregnant woman directed the assistant on where they were going, sure that she understood her gestures. While she chatted about her day, the assistant remained stubbornly quiet as she dug out roots or cut young leaves from the plants she was directed to.

“You really can’t speak, can you?” she asked.

Kay turned and sighed deeply before raising her arms wearily into a cross. “I wonder how much of that is because you don’t want to, can’t, or have been told to remain silent.”

Kay grinned, not maliciously, but almost mischievously, as if caught out. “Ah! Well, then you can talk to me.”

Kay crossed her arms again.

“Aww! I want to hear how you sound.”

Kay crossed her arms once more.

“What about a system, just so that I know I am not talking to myself. You clearly understand me.”

Kay looked up at the sky to see how much time they had left before partially nodding her head.

“Have you always been from this forest?”

Kay crossed her arms.

“Have you been long with the shaman?”

More crossed arms.

“Then where are you from?”

Kay shrugged her shoulders, knowing that the questions were now becoming dangerous and couldn’t be answered with yes or no.

Mitis then seemed to squeal and grab her left wrist.

“A mark of valour! I heard that the village agreed to allow the shaman to give this to you! I have never seen one before. I mean, the king has one, but not like this. His tattoo told of knives in the dark and brothers slain. This one is so much prettier.”

Kay grinned painfully.

“You saved my older brother.” She said softly.

Kay did a double-take. She had had no idea that the huntsman had been Mitis’ brother.

“It would have killed my mother to lose another son to the forest. I am glad you were there.”

Kay took her arm back before picking up the basket she had let sit at her feet when Mitis had started asking questions. She inclined her head back the way they had come.

“Already?”

Kay inclined her head up and tapped her ear.

“Danger?”

Kay seemed lost for the right word and instead held a hand flat and wiggled it to show her uncertainty.

“I wish you would talk to me.”

Kay shrugged.

“Is it a vow of silence? It must be. Is it because you are a forest foundling? We’re not a backwards village. We don’t see foundlings as curses.”

Kay rolled her eye before walking back the way they had come.

“Is the shaman your parent? Guardian? Rescuer? What?”

The chatty voice followed Kay all the way to the village, where Mitis finally fell silent.

“I want to be your friend.” She said quietly.

Kay stopped and took a deep breath, then reached out for Mitis’s hand. She gave it one squeeze, accepting the gesture but saying nothing else. Mitis felt her face glow red. While she had wanted a verbal answer, the physical one was just as good, if not better! She returned the squeeze and then said softly.

“Can I visit more. I miss gardening.”

Kay shrugged, released her hand, turned away, and started back along the route to her home. She might even get to it before nightfall.

“I’ll see you tomorrow!” called Mitis after her.

Kay waved over her shoulder. Anyway, hope all of you have an amazing day!
