Greetings all
While I have no students in class, please enjoy this update before more madness is due to start!
Saita froze. She didn’t recognise where she was, but the one before her, she did.
Edzeeker looked as shocked to see her as she was to see him. Saita hadn’t spared him a thought in decades, but now, he was sitting before her; the very reason she had become what she had.
She tried to place when she was. Was this within her own time? A different one? She wasn’t sure until the old Dekai spoke.
“You survived her.”
It was a statement, not a question. She nodded her head slowly.
“And by the look on your face, I am not around anymore.”
She shook her head.
“It’s been some time. Hasn’t it?”
“It has.” She said softly.
All the hate she had had for the old Dekai, like her hate for Kay, had fizzled out years ago. She felt empty and not sure what she was doing here. Then a thought flickered into life in her skull. Edzeeker could travel in time. She had travelled time because of him. He could teach her.
“How long do I have?”
She wasn’t sure. She looked around the room as fragments of memories came back to her. But it wasn’t until she saw the diary in front of the Dekai that she knew when she was, and how little time she had left.
“Teach me to travel time.” She said.
Edzeeker tilted his head and chuckled slightly, “That takes years to learn, even if you have the skill to learn, and by the look of concern on your face, we don’t have years. Likely hours at best.”
She sighed, “Yes.”
“Well, mature Saita doesn’t mince her words, does she?” He looked her up and down. “How old are you now?”
“About 250.”
The old Dekai snorted and shook his head, “Then the curse isn’t broken.” “It is, I just didn’t have the courage to take up the mantle of the Dragon.”
“So, she is dead?”
“Not exactly.”
Edzeeker pondered this information before indicating that she should sit. She did, knowing that every request he had now was that of a dead man. When she had been younger, she had dreamed of this moment. The time before Kay had gotten to him, a time when she could have taken revenge, but those feelings had long since disappeared.
She sat down.
“May I?” asked the Dekai as he reached forward.
“You won’t like what is coming, and I can’t save you.”
“I didn’t ask to be saved from my punishment. I only wish to see if the sacrifices were worth it.”
Saita bowed her head and allowed him to rest his hand on it. He kept it there for a long time, making no sounds, but diving into memories. Saita didn’t stop him; there was no point in hiding anything. If she was right, this was the night that Kay would come for him. That was the only thing she spared for him. She couldn’t let him know who would be turning up.
After some time, Edzeeker released her. He sighed heavily before taking her hands and rolling them over to see the marks. It had been many years since she had allowed them to show, so she did, allowing the Dekai to see his handiwork.
“There are things you are still to learn.” He said softly.
“I know you never acted alone. I know the Heavenly were involved.”
He traced the marks, looking at them sadly.
“I am glad that not everything was taken from you in the end.”
“It was hard fought for.”
“No doubt. I don’t have the time to teach you, but I can give you the information that you require. With your power, I can guide you back to where you came from, but from there, you will need someone to unravel what I am about to do to you.”
He once more placed a hand on her head before saying. “Open your mind, let me give you what you need.”
There was no begging for forgiveness. This was a cold and calculated exchange. Nothing more. Saita would not give him forgiveness, even after all these years, and she was sure that he knew this and thus didn’t ask.
Receiving information like this wasn’t new to her. She didn’t like it, but it was something that Bolx’s mother had been fond of doing. Silens never minced words. It was as if she weighed out the words she wanted to use and then used exactly that many. If more was required, it involved foreheads being brought together. That had never bothered Saita, as that was how she showed affection to her firstborn and those who came later. It was the excess information that was looking for a place to go that usually made her head ache.
However, this wasn’t the first time that Edzeeker had rooted around in her head. He had, after all, placed the blocks in her mind when she was a child, to save her sanity. He knew where to place what he needed her to learn. When he was done, he released her and gave a small smile. He wrung his hands together for a few minutes, as if wanting to say more, but in the end, he remained silent about it. He reached for her hands once more and simply said.
“Be the balance to the chaos that we brought to this world.” Whispered the old Dekai.
Saita gave the hands a quick squeeze. There was nothing more to say at this point.
This was an interesting piece to write after I went back and I read how angry Saita was when Edzeeker died. I think that this finally ends his influence on her
