Fledgling: Part 92

Greetings all

When I originally started this book, it was going to be super short. Kay was never meant to be reborn, and it was going to end as soon as Saita found Aidan and Bolx. However, the more I wrote, the more I found that there were so many questions that I never got around to answering.

So, if you're wondering why Fledgling is still continuing, it's because there are questions I want to answer. Enjoy the update.

“So, let me get this straight.” Said Bolx slowly, as if digesting both the meal and what he had been told. “The Fell Dragon eats energy, and the Heavenly is supposed to create life?”

“Supposed to. Not all of them did. Some played God, others made favours. Then there were those who stood back and watched. That was how the Dragon was supposed to be born. It was supposed to be one half of a whole.”

“That doesn’t explain the Chaos Dragon, though.” Said Aidan.

“Ah, my little flame, how I have missed you.” The Balance Dragon smiled at the child before continuing. “Kay being chosen as a Champion and becoming a Fell Dragon never should have happened. She was the embodiment of want because she had nothing. That, combined with being forced to fight the creature that was the Dragon at the time, isolation, madness, and broken promises led to the creation of a Chaos Dragon.”

“I thought she was just a Dragon of Want.” Said Saita.

“That was an outdated term used to explain something that didn’t make sense. Honestly, she would have happily continued her existence within the cage if they had just stopped making Champions to kill her. She was cared about for the first time in her life. Hell, she even had a true friend.”

Red-Eye shook his head. “I feared her, but I loved her, hated her too. It was complicated.”

“The thing is, hate breeds hate, and if they were going to attack her, then she needed to defend herself. And she did, by removing the problems.”

“The other Fledglings.” Said Saita.

“Yes, and more than a few Champions. Eventually, all efforts to stop her were concentrated on us. The queen, the first love, and us. The idiots thought that by being fewer in number, we would be less likely to be spotted.”

“No, it’s because we can’t read our own lifeforce.” Said Saita. “I should have sensed you, but I didn’t.”

“I think I underestimated you. I shouldn’t have stepped in.” The Dragon moved a few vegetables across the plate.

There was silence for a while before she continued.

“With Kay being a Chaos Dragon, she was siphoning the energy from various universes, but nothing was being put back. The Heavenly could no longer access the energy they once could because Kay used the energy to strengthen her Wolven, not herself, at least not by much. With no energy to sustain them, the Heavenly died back and their powers diminished. The universe was bleeding out, and there was nothing that could be done. Until we were taken, that is. We were the last hope to bring balance.”

“But that never happened because I couldn’t do it.” Said Saita.

“There is no reason to play the blame game. It’s over. The problem is that the universe is still bleeding out, and so Fledgling Dragons were created. They would spend time awake, trying to stop the siphoning of energy from the holes torn through universes and times. But they aren’t like us. They don’t carry what we do, and they burn out. Fledge is one of the few that still live.”

“He said he became a Fledgling to hunt down his mother. He thought I was his mother.”

“We’re not.”

That was all the information the Balance Dragon gave, and Saita didn’t push.

“Why come here now?” asked Bolx.

“I messed up. I changed time when I shouldn’t have. I have been trying to fix what I can, but I can’t fix the damage done by Kay and make sure time flows as it should.”

“And you expect that of me?” asked Saita.

“Edzeeker gave you the knowledge, and I will teach you how to use it.”

“Why send Fledge and Rubar away?” asked Martin.

It was a question that everyone had pondered, but no one had voiced it.

“I sent him home because someone was waiting for him. We’re doing our best, but my mistake is causing everything to come undone.” The Balance Dragon put her fork down. “I thought, I thought if I could change just one small part of the timeline, then everything would be fine, but instead, I’ve started a cascade where time is erasing itself.”

The table fell silent.

“What?” Bolx has lost all the colour in his face. “But I changed time…”

“No, you made slight impacts on it. I stupidly took away something I had no right to do. The keystone to everything.”

Saita considered the words spoken by the Balance Dragon. It was true that when she was younger, she had thought of ways to change her fate if she ever managed to unlock her ability to travel through time. But then she had thought of the queen who would rather live the life that was forced upon her, rather than lose the child she had been forced to bear.

“You think you may understand, Saita.” Said the Dragon softly. “But the truth is, you don’t know everything yet. You don’t know how we were chosen. When you learn that, I hope you don’t make the mistake I did. I have lost everything, and existence is going to blink out if you follow the same pattern.”

“Can’t you just fix it?” asked Maxine.

“When you destroy a blueprint, can you build what was based on it?”

Silence.

“Why come to me then?”

“Because Kay was reborn earlier than anticipated. The universe still remembers her. Her Wolven still remember her. Cage or not, the siphoning energy will go to her. You aren’t ready yet to be a Balance Dragon, and she hasn’t become what she must.”

“Considering the amount of trouble you’re in, is being cryptic really helping you?” asked Bolx.

“You, more than anyone, should understand that I can’t just come out and say it. Saita has already rejected being a Dragon. That caused the birth of the Fledglings to maintain the universe. Forcing her into that role now will prevent the story from playing out the way that it did. Forcing a new Dragon will just create another Chaos Dragon.”

Maxine snorted. “If Chaos Dragons are so dangerous, why not just get rid of Kay. You’d be doing the universe a favour.”

The look that crossed the Balance Dragon’s face was one of pure horror. “It was thinking like that that caused the problem I have right now. Chaos has every right to exist. Death is invertible, but so is life. The Balance Dragon brings life, the Chaos Dragon is the one that takes the remnants of people, places, and things and consolidates that energy to be given to the Balance Dragon, who in return creates life.”

“Thus, the same coin.” Said Bolx.

“You and the remaining Heavenly wouldn’t have known about this back when you faced off against Kay. It’s things I have fought tooth and claw for. I got cocky and thought I was God. I messed up, and soon my time will pass.”

“What do you mean? I thought we were immortal.”

“We are, but the collapsing existence…I need to hold it back. I have already lost my half.”

“You mean your Chaos Dragon…you mean Kay?” demanded Saita.

“I can’t give you all the answers. Just know that there are set periods in time that you must observe, and Kay was reborn too early. She can’t go with you. She needs to regain the humanity that was taken from her. How you do that may change a few things. As for you repeating my mistake, that will be up to you when you discover it.”

“Why can’t you just give me the answers?”

“It will break you, the way you are now. No. You need to get to a point in your life that you find out for yourself and can make a decision that won’t destroy the timeline.” The Balance Dragon got to her feet. “And I have little time to teach you what Fledge knew. Come. No more talk.” On Friday we get to meet someone knew. I hope you all enjoy it! See you then!
