Greetings Readers!
Snaffie is growing fast and strong. At 2:30 this morning, he wanted to have formula. By 8 this morning, he refused to touch it, favouring the baby cereal instead. I guess he switched himself to solids without me trying.
Anyway, please enjoy today's update of Fledgling. I have been working hard on the latter parts of the book.
Kay glared at the Balance Dragon as she and Saita sat in silent meditation. She had lied to her. She had been promised freedom if she had helped Saita, but she was in no better situation than she was in the cage.
She remembered waking up in the cage after her physical body died. She remembered the agony and the wetness of her blood, and then she was surrounded by darkness. She knew instantly where she was. She had hoped that the controller in her neck had been too damaged to link her consciousness with this place, but waking in the dark, she knew that hope was shattered. She waited for the screams of the rest of the Dragons trapped here, but none ever came. There was silence. Had she damaged the cage to such an extent that she had inadvertently released the trapped minds? If that was the case, why was she still here?
Then she had come. She made a promise to release her, but she needed something in return. She explained that Kay would be an aid to Saita, just as Sedeath was to Jethron. Kay would guide Saita to become the next Fell Dragon in such a way that all the pitfalls of the Dragons never happened.
It had sounded so easy, so simple, and there was even a chance of release. Kay had thought that it was a prison sentence that would need to be completed before she would be granted her freedom. Kay had appeared to the Heavenly trying to place Saita in the cage. Told them of her plan and gave up her favour to ensure that the girl could go free.
Kay had expected gratitude from her, but Saita had been terrified to find out about the strange entity in her head. She had constructed walls around the invading force and refused to work with Kay. Kay had tried to speak, but darkness was thrown on her for so long that she stopped caring. If the new Fell Dragon wouldn’t listen to her, then it was no skin off her nose. The darkness was a welcome after everything Kay had been through.
What she hadn’t expected was the pain that would follow when she sometimes woke, when Saita allowed her defences to drop. Learning that there were several around Saita who knew of her existence. They hadn’t treated her with hate but welcomed her.
The giant she had wanted murdered had been the kinder of the two men who had greeted her on the first night she had emerged. While Doran never fully trusted her, he always knew when she emerged and would keep her busy while the giant took over stately matters. Later, when she was still around, the giant would sit with children’s books and their children, reading to them. After the children had gone to bed, he would teach her to read, something she had hated. She hadn’t cared for it as a child, and learning now was pointless. Or so she had thought.
There were times that he was away, and Doran couldn’t keep an eye on her all the time, and the children needed to be read to. She had struggled through a few books with the twins laughing at her, thinking it was a game. Eventually, she was able to read the basic books to the children without stumbling, and later at night, read things she found fascinating. It had been such a simple gift from the giant, and he would never know how much it would mean to her.
“Staring at them isn’t going to make either of them acknowledge you.” Said a voice behind her.
And there is much more to come!
