Greetings Readers
I hope that you have all enjoyed the recent update by @zakludick. Currently, we have split the story in two, so it's important to read both to know what is happening.
Enjoy!
Robert felt a laugh of hysteria building in his chest. He must be dead. Why else would a pure white fox be talking to him. Being dead was almost a relief to the old knight. If he was dead, then his curse died with him, and he could never hurt anyone again.
He lay back in the sun-warmed sand and looked up at the sky with a happy sigh. If this was the afterlife, then he could have been in far worse places.
“Hey!” the fox came right up to him and pounced with its front paws onto his belly.
With his wind knocked from him, Robert sat up and gasped for breath. And that was when he knew he wasn’t dead. He glared at the fox that seemed to be grinning at him with multiple tails fanned out around it, looking like some kind of peacock-fox beast.
“Okay. Not dead.” He sighed as he got to his feet.
He looked around him and found no debris of a ship. At the very least, the ship hadn’t been destroyed, or so he hoped. He then turned his attention back to the creature that seemed to be patiently waiting for him.
“Uhm…where am I?”
The creature tilted its head, as if not understanding the question.
Robert chided himself. He must have imagined that the beast spoke to him. He was likely dehydrated from being in the ocean and if he didn’t get out of the sun soon, he could add sunburn to the list of things that were rapidly dehydrating him.
“Strange creatures aside, shelter, water, then food.” He muttered under his breath as he looked around him.
The black sand stretched out to his left and right, while before him there seemed to be a dense jungle. Going in there would likely be his only recourse. He had knowledge of various plants and animals he could eat in an emergency, but he wasn’t sure he would find anything here as the plants seemed alien to him.
Seemingly annoyed at his indecision, the fox hopped forward and grabbed hold of his hand. It was a vice grip, but its teeth didn’t sink into Robert’s skin. Clearly, this animal had some sort of intelligence.
Still not sure that he wasn’t dead, Robert gave up and followed the strange creature into the jungle. It seemed to drag him for ages before it let go of him and bound into the underbrush.
“Now would be the perfect time for an ambush.” Said the man wearily as he pushed through the thick plants.
Just beyond the brush, he found a riverbank and almost dove into the water in his hurry to get some water. Scooping handful after handful of water eventually sated his thirst and he looked up. His exhaustion turned into confusion and pure shock.
No longer was he within a dense jungle, but a thriving city.
“I needed to be sure.” Said someone to his right.
He turned and found the fox was still there. No one around them seemed to take notice of them. As if it was every day that a stranger in ragged clothes materialised to drink out of a water fountain.
“You’re not evil. The thing you have become isn’t evil. Not really. We should go see Kai. Your friends will be most worried about you.”
The fox then leapt at him, and Robert was about to dodge out of the way, but the fox had shrunk in size. Now, it was no bigger than a house cat and wrapped itself around his neck.
“You will need to follow this street, specifically keeping the white houses on your left, and the red on your right. When you see blue houses, you can turn right. When we get to that point, I will continue to direct you. Hurry up, will you? Kai is patient but doesn’t have an endless supply.”
“Just hold on. Where am I?”
“Oh, you humans are so funny. This is the main island of Kai. Look around you, you should see the mountains now.”
And so, Robert looked. There seemed to be a ring of mountains around them. As if they were inside the remains of an ancient volcano. This was indeed the island of Kai.
“How?”
“Heroic deeds should be rewarded. I hope Kai can help you.”
The fox-like creature then nipped his ear before saying.
“Get a move on!”
