Amables Hivers, creo que todos nosotros, de alguna manera, llevamos un artista por dentro. A algunos nos apasiona la escritura, a otros la fotografía, la danza, la arquitectura… quizás con buenas oportunidades podríamos explotar nuestro infinito potencial. Hoy quisiera presentarles la obra de un joven artista camagüeyano, hasta donde sé poco promocionado, aunque con aciertos que bien vale la pena develar.
El creador se llama Vladimir R. González Estévez y tuvo la cortesía de compartirme algunos de sus cuadros para que se los pudiera mostrar. Yo lo he llamado “el artista de las máscaras”, porque así van sus personajes, camuflados entre las máscaras y los símbolos de la cultura. Se trata de un arte que se sustenta en conceptos y que intenta revelar algunas aristas de nuestra realidad.
La primera vez que me acerqué a sus cuadros, como conjunto, formaban parte de la exposición de un proyecto liderado por el artista plástico José Antonio Hechavarría. La obra había sido realizada usando materiales reciclados (que es el concepto que maneja el citado proyecto), en este caso, el cartón. Como espectadora no especializada llamaban mi atención estas figuras deseosas de libertad, de escapar de una estructura subyugante, rígida, intolerante.
Para mi beneplácito he vuelto a encontrar su obra en las redes. Aunque el fin sea comercial, el autor no realiza concesiones. Esta vez las imágenes ganan en volumen y textura y nos presentan figuras que no existen de manera concreta en la realidad, pero que, al mismo tiempo, pueden ser cualquiera de nosotros. Se trata de una crítica al estado del ser humano contemporáneo. Cuando apreciamos estos cuadros nos parece que estamos ante algo poco convencional, pero reconocible. En otras palabras, el artista nos invita a una mirada introspectiva, un viaje del que no regresamos siendo los mismos.
En un orden más personal, debo admitir que el tema de las máscaras me apasiona. Además, considero que siempre invita a la reflexión. Solo me resta desearle muchos éxitos a Vladimir R. González Estévez y que su obra encuentre las oportunidades que merecen la constancia y el tesón.

Dear Hivers, I believe that all of us, in some way, carry an artist within. Some of us are passionate about writing, others about photography, dance, architecture... perhaps with the right opportunities we could tap into our infinite potential. Today I would like to introduce you to the work of a young artist from Camagüey, who, as far as I know, is under-promoted, although with some achievements well worth unveiling.
The creator is named Vladimir R. González Estévez, and he was kind enough to share some of his paintings with me so I could show them to you. I have called him "the mask artist" because that is how his characters appear, camouflaged among the masks and symbols of culture. It is an art based on concepts and attempts to reveal some aspects of our reality.
The first time I saw his paintings as a group, they were part of an exhibition of a project led by the visual artist José Antonio Hechavarría. The work had been made using recycled materials (which is the concept behind the aforementioned project), in this case, cardboard. As a non-specialist viewer, I was drawn to these figures yearning for freedom, for escaping a subjugating, rigid, intolerant structure.
To my delight, I found his work again online. Although the purpose is commercial, the artist makes no concessions. This time, the images gain volume and texture, presenting us with figures that don't concretely exist in reality, but which, at the same time, could be any of us. It's a critique of the state of contemporary humanity. When we look at these paintings, we feel we're looking at something unconventional, yet recognizable. In other words, the artist invites us to an introspective look, a journey from which we never return the same.
On a more personal note, I must admit that the subject of masks fascinates me. Furthermore, I believe it always invites reflection. All that remains is to wish Vladimir R.González Estévez much success and that his work finds the opportunities that perseverance and tenacity deserve.
