Today I decided to treat myself to a walk, one of those that aren't bought or planned, but lived. And like any gift that moves, I want to share it with those who are part of this Worldmappin community, so they can experience it, imagine it, or dream it. I delved into these streets of Havana, where the old and the new intertwine like old friends, and every corner holds a story worth telling.
My tour began in Central Park, the urban epicenter less than 50 meters from the city's Kilometer Zero, marked by the Capitol Building. In the center of the park stands the statue of José Martí, our national hero, surrounded by tall royal palms, our national tree, and seven flowerbeds in honor of the medical students unjustly executed during the colonial era. From here, history speaks without words.

Y como todo regalo que emociona, quiero compartirlo con quienes forman parte de esta comunidad de Worldmappin, para que lo vivan, lo imaginen o lo sueñen. Me adentré en estas calles de La Habana, donde lo antiguo y lo moderno se entrelazan como viejos amigos, y cada esquina guarda una historia que merece ser contada.*

En el centro del parque se alza la estatua de José Martí, nuestro héroe nacional, rodeado por altas palmas reales , nuestro árbol nacional, y siete canteros en honor a los estudiantes de medicina injustamente fusilados en época colonial. I walked through those streets alone, but I wasn't. All around me, voices, laughter, questions. Tourists, absorbed, like me, in the contemplation of architectural styles that merge into a single space: neo-Baroque, art nouveau, eclecticism... all coexisting in harmony. I felt Havana beneath my feet, as if each tile were telling me a secret.
Facing the park, with its back to the monument, stands the Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso, a neo-Baroque architectural gem inaugurated in the 1800s, making it more than two centuries old. It was the largest theater in Latin America and today houses a museum that welcomes visitors with a statue of the legendary Cuban dancer on tiptoe. Just looking at it is a spectacle in itself.

Turistas absortos, como yo, en la contemplación de estilos arquitectónicos que se funden en un mismo espacio, neobarroco, art nouveau, eclecticismo… todos conviviendo en armonía. Fue el teatro más grande de Latinoamérica y hoy alberga un museo que recibe a sus visitantes con la estatua en puntillas de la legendaria bailarina cubana. Mirarlo es ya un espectáculo.*

To the right of the park, across the street, is the Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski. It occupies what was once the Manzana de Gómez, the first Cuban shopping center with interior corridors, opened at the beginning of the 20th century. After years of restoration, it opened as a hotel in 2017, retaining its original name on the corners and its neoclassical façade intact.
Next to it, the National Museum of Fine Arts stands like a temple of universal art. I confess that on this walk I had planned to visit it for the first time, but it was closed without explanation. I was left wanting more, but also with the promise to return.
*A mano derecha del parque ,por el frente, se encuentra el Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski ocupa lo que fue la antigua Manzana de Gómez, el primer centro comercial cubano con pasillos interiores, inaugurado a inicios del siglo XX. Tras años de restauración, abrió sus puertas como hotel en el 2017, conservando sus siglas originales en las esquinas y su fachada neoclásica intacta.
Junto a él, el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes se alza como un templo del arte universal. Confieso que en este paseo planeaba visitarlo por primera vez, pero estaba cerrado sin explicación. Me quedé con las ganas, pero también con la promesa de volver.*

The avenue separating these two buildings leads us to the Albear Fountain, a sculptural composition honoring engineer Francisco de Albear, designer of the Havana aqueduct. Directly opposite, the Floridita fountain, with its pink facade, reminds us that this is where the daiquiri was born and that Hemingway turned it into a legend, making this place internationally renowned for over 100 years.

We also have vintage cars wandering these streets, witnesses of the past. Some advance elegantly, others rest in the sun, parked as if posing for a postcard. Their gleaming, brightly colored bodies contrast with the stone and marble of the buildings, creating a visual symphony that only Havana can offer. They are part of the city, harmonizing with their surroundings and making it shine.
*Tambien tenemos los autos antiguos merodeando estas calles como testigos del pasado. Algunos avanzan con elegancia, otros descansan bajo el sol, estacionados como si posaran para una postal. Sus carrocerías relucientes y con colores vivos contrastan con la piedra y el mármol de los edificios, creando una sinfonía visual que solo La Habana puede ofrecer. Ellos forman parte de la ciudad, armonizan con el entorno y lo hacen brillar.*

This walk was simple. I was accompanied by my thoughts, the breeze, the murmurs of the city, and the certainty that Havana, at its center, remains a place where history lives on. I hope this tour inspires others to walk it, experience it, and treat themselves to a moment like this.
