Today I'm sharing with you a place that was part of my daily life for five years. Today I've rediscovered it, and with it, many memories of my student life and the courage that drove me in those years have returned.
A few steps from the steps of the University of Havana, which I climbed so many times with books in my hand and dreams in my heart, stands a monument that honors a man and safeguards an essential part of Cuban consciousness.
Julio Antonio Mella, student leader and revolutionary, rests in this square that bears his name. His ashes were buried here on January 10, 1976, the 47th anniversary of his assassination in Mexico.
Today I return as a visitor, but also as a witness to a history that endures.

Hoy les comparto un lugar que durante cinco años formó parte de mi rutina diaria. Hoy lo he reencontrado, y con él han vuelto muchos recuerdos de mi vida estudiantil y de la intrepidez que me impulsaba en aquellos años.
A pocos pasos de la escalinata de la Universidad de La Habana, por donde tantas veces subí con libros en la mano y sueños en el corazón, se alza un monumento que honra a un hombre y resguarda una parte esencial de la conciencia cubana.
Julio Antonio Mella, líder estudiantil y revolucionario, descansa en esta plaza que lleva su nombre. Sus cenizas fueron depositadas aquí el 10 de enero de 1976, en el 47.º aniversario de su asesinato en México.
Hoy regreso como visitante, pero también como testigo de una historia que sigue viva.*

I remember when I was a student, every month a floral offering was paid tribute to it. It was a simple gesture, but filled with respect. Even more intimate was the ritual of newlyweds, who would pass by here to leave their wedding bouquets. As if love and struggle shared a single altar. Today, as I look at the monument surrounded by these towering trees, I feel that those trunks and branches act like outstretched arms, enveloping the space in a reverent, almost sacred calm.

The city bustles around him, but here time seems to stand still. Marble, bronze, stone... everything is arranged so that memory settles. Walking through this small plaza, which I hadn't visited for many years, was a reunion with my memories. This place is a tribute to the thought of social development. A promise that ideas never die, that youth continue to find here a mirror and a compass. As I left, I felt that Mella was accompanied by the students, the lovers, the dreamers. And also by those who, like me, return to remember that history is not only the past, but a present that challenges us.
*La ciudad bulle a su alrededor, pero aquí el tiempo parece detenerse. El mármol, el bronce, la piedra, todo está dispuesto para que la memoria se asiente. Recorrer esta pequeña plaza , que hacía muchos años no visitaba, fue un reencuentro con mis recuerdos. Este lugar es un homenaje al pensamiento de desarrollo social.
