The gate marks the beginning of Avenida del Puerto, just to the right of the Sailors’ Monument. It feels like a threshold between the city and the sea. From the sidewalk, I watched the little train go by along Avenida del Puerto, along the seafront to the other end of the Malecón. It seemed like a beautiful scene: the train, the gate, the monument, and in the background, the Christ of Havana, contemplating everything from the other shore. Next to the gate is a building currently used for housing. It has a plaque explaining the history of the Gate, and the words "Port Pilot" engraved on it.
