First of all, I have to say upfront this post does not represent the view of everyone or even the majority on Hive. It is my own view based on my time on Hive, my observation and opinion of how things should roll. In particular some figures I used can be quite subjective. You may not agree with my standards and that's fine.
The Healthcheck List
But if you're feeling a little lost on Hive, am wondering why some people get more support than you, then this may give you some inkling. Take a look at the points below and see how many apply to you.
Group A
- I have never abused on Hive, plagiarised, spun content or used AI to write my posts
first and most foremost, original content only on Hive please, don't expect support for anything else
- My posts normally consist of more than 150 words or original photos/art/music/video created by me
I get it not everyone writes long content and Hive welcomes short form content as well. However, you'll generally find you have a higher chance of getting more support if you enhance your content, it's very difficult to have one killer photo that garners a lot of support - On average I read and consume at least 5 posts a day written by other people
don't just come here to dump your post hoping for rewards and leave. If you want people to read your content, make an effort to read other peoples' as well
- Excluding bot commands or entry to contests, I make at least 5 genuine quality comments on the day I'm active on Hive
leading on from the previous point, engage with people after you have read their post, make quality comments to show you have read it. Engagement is key to building your account and network
- I comment more on other people's posts than responding to comments on my own posts
spread the support around and people will do the same. If no one commented on other people's post, Hive would be a dead place
- My self vote % is less than 5%
Self vote can be seen as selfish by many on Hive. Imagine if all the whales selfvote themselves every day, there will be nothing left in the reward pool for everyone else. Support other people instead yourself. (see below on how to find your selfvote %)
- I spread my upvote around to a lot of people
We all have our favourite authors we like to support, but it would be nice to spread our support around to more people and especially beyond self vote. There's no hard and fast rule on this, but maybe the 20/80 rule will be a good place to start (see below on how to find this out)
- I have powered up at least 10 times in the past 12 months
- I am not or have not powered down in the past 6 months
Increasing your stake gives you more power on Hive, and you will get more curation rewards when you upvote people. Both are signs of your long term commitment to Hive.
- I have at least 30 HBD in savings
There aren't many places that give you 15% interest on your savings. Hang around for 3 years you'll get 50% on your savings, and in 5 years time you'll double it
-
I delegate 40% or less of my stake Delegation can have different purposes, but a lot of times it's for returns from the delegatee. You get returns for yourself but that means you can't' upvote and support others. Following a trail instead of delegating can have the same effect and you still have the flexibility to support your favourite authors. Win win for everyone

My staked HP is more than my earnings on Hive This has been a very talked about subject recently for all the right reasons. If you missed it, you can read about it here and here. (See below on how to find this out)
- I actively manage my own or help to moderate/curate in at least one community
We can't expect everyone to run or help manage a community, but it's nice if you can contribute back to the community
- I have proxied or voted for at least 27 witnesses
Excercise your right to have a say in Hive governance, even if you have a small stake. It's the intention that matters. Vote for witnesses that you think offer value to Hive and not one because they give you 0.001 Hive everyday. That's called vote buying
- I have invested fiat into Hive
That's a true vote of confidence in Hive. Well done!!!
Some of the information for the above points can be found on this website https://hivetasks.com/ just add @ and your account at the end of the link. If the data doesn't load, please check the settings. Instructions can found here.
Self Vote - this is the figure circled in red. This user doesn't selfvote at all ๐
Spread your upvote around - click on the Out Votes button circled in yellow on the right hand side. A pop up window will appear with a list of the people you voted for the most. This user upvotes many people, or they could be following curation trails. Either way, they're spreading their support around ๐
Staked HP vs earnings - your staked HP can be found in all wallets. Here it is shown as 42645 circled in blue at the top. At the bottom is their all time earnings 8652 + 22185 = 30837. This user has a higher stake than their earnings ๐
Group B
A few more checkpoints before we are done - I am following two or more whales with over 1m effective HP who have not posted in the past two years - I did my first outgoing transaction within three months of making my first post - Excluding Waves/Threads or other short form dapps, I normally post more than twice each day
The Results and what does it mean?
As I mentioned before, some of these checks are subjective, eg what's abuse or what's a genuine quality comment? Why 150 words and not 50? Why read 5 posts a day when I'm so busy in real life? Why 5% self vote and not 20%? Why delegate 40% and not 60%? What's wrong with powering down or making an outgoing transaction within the first three months?
Hive is decentralised, there are no rules and you can more or less do what you want. We all have different needs in real life, and different expectations from Hive and that's fine. For example, power down is always a contentious issue. I know power down have helped some people in life and death situations or during Covid when they had no income. But being active and constantly powering down and withdrawing when you have earned over 20k but have less than 500 staked in your account?
The reason I have this checklist is because they are things many people look for when deciding to support an account or not. If you answered Yes to any of these checks, deduct the Yes in Group B from the Yes in Group A. The maximum score you will get is 15 and the lowest -3. Hopefully you will have a high positive number. There is no hard and fast rule on what's a good score or minimum acceptable level for a healthy account. There is no pass mark. This isn't an exam. These are merely prompts to give you an insight into the mindsight of those who can help you
If you want, feel free to drop your score below, there are always people looking out for healthy accounts to support. And don't feel compelled, or the need to explain why you scored -3. As long as you're ok with it is all that matters.
Have a great weekend!
