What a big difference a month of hot weather has made to my garden. It has grown so much since my last update. I went away to Bilbao in Spain 3 weeks ago, and as soon as I returned on I checked on all my babies.
My courgette/zucchini plant had a couple of small courgettes growing before I left and when I came back they had grown ready to be harvest. Each of them was around 800gm and got me two lovely meals.
The next batch is already growing. There are six decent size ones, and three more little ones are growing above it. I hope the plant has enough energy to support them all.
This is a bitter gourd plant. I've had it for over two months and it hasn't grown much. When I went away, I covered it with an open top milk carton, and it shot through the opening during those few days I was away. It seems that it has accelerated its growth and has now finally decided to shoot. There's a side vine growing as well and I think in a couple of weeks time I may have to start pruning it to grow better. In the meanwhile, I have to sort out a trellis, bitter gourd planta can grow massive, I hope mine will.
My fig tree is becoming such a little beauty. My brother in law propagated it for me last year, and he was very pleased when he saw it this week, he reckons it might even bear some fruit soon!
These romanesco are an experiment and takes a long time to harvest. The caterpillar have been munching away at it, I don't think it's going to make it to harvest. I'll just keep them as sacrifice to keep the pests away from my other nice and healthy plants.
I have 5 tomato plants this year. They're growing a bit slower compared to previous years and the tomato fruit seems to take a long time to mature. There's quite a lot flowers. I hope the recent heatwave will give it the boost it needs to grow.
I bought some purple sweet potatoes a few months ago, they were very nice. Of course I decided to try grow them. This one is growing so well, I just hope what's beneath is as good as, if not better than what's on the surface.
After last year's slug invasion, I'm very worried about planting young plants in my planter this year. I tested it with some lettuce, so far they're healthy and safe. Now I have confidence to plant my other seedlings in.
The Gladioli from my mum's patch has finally blossomed. I planted 24, so far 13 stems have buds and each stem has around 20 flowers. The flowers bloom from the bottom up over a few days and don't last very long. The first few flowers on the first stem has already died and the top ones still haven't bloomed yet. I hope this coming week the flowers on the other stems will all bloom, that will be a sight! Can't wait.
There's still quite a lot going on in my garden at the moment. There are changes and growth every day, and this coming week I should have new lawn in my garden. Hopefully I can show you very soon.
