Independence isn't always synonymous with Freedom. Independence sounds more political than actual. Hence, we can commemorate our Independence Day but not our Freedom Day.

Man is born free but everywhere in chains

J. J. Roussaeu couldn't have been more right about that statement. Independence Day is celebrated by nations that once were under colonial occupation of stronger nations mostly European nations. Independence sounds like political freedom from external control. At least that was the shared view of the nationalists movement for independence and self rule.

But they didn't really see the entire scope of what they were agitating for. What they were fighting for, however necessary, was less in scope than the reality that would strike them later: Post-independence troubles. The nationalists themselves, becoming full fledged politicians could not hold on to the integrity with which the fought for self rule.

That generation of politicians became power drunk and encumbered with corruption. Tribalism, nepotism, embezzlement of public funds, lifestyle indulgence, and undermining the Constitution became the order of the day. Hence, the military intervention followed by a civil war, and decades of successive military rule.

But then, with all the governments we've had, one factor remains a constant threat: corruption and economic mismanagement. Government after government, issues of financial embezzlement and misappropriation keep making the news headlines. Abandoned projects litter the country without any accountability. This pattern of corruption has become an institutional thing. It's becoming a culture; a generational thing.

Nigeria at 65 is a free man, but everywhere in chains.

Independence Day was always a day of joy accross the nation. But I have noticed in recent years, not many Nigerians are willing to celebrate the day. Schools usually went on match past at the stadium. Today, being 1st October, nothing colorful went flying around town. Coincidentally, it rained throughout the day today. Worst still, many of us are still trying to digest the sad news of our beloved Arise News presenter, Somtochukwu Maduagwu.

We love our country, but our leaders are giving is reasons not to. A lot of youth are seeking a way out of the country for “better living” elsewhere. This has caused massive brain drain, detrimental to our own economy.

But we ain't giving up hope. One day, we would get it right. More citizens, especially the youth are waking up to the reality of today’s politics, and the craftiness of politicians.

We will get it right. Until then, let's keep the flag flying.

Happy Independence Day to us.
