Tattoos were taboo for any decent guy or gal in the fifties and early sixties. Ducktails - rebellious young guys or gangsters - and the Hell's Angels - originally outlaw biker gangs sporting leather jackets, who now ride Harley Davidson motorcycles but are still notorious, were proud of their tattoos, many of which could not be called works of art at all; unlike today's tattoos! Our parents told us we'd be 'defiling' our bodies, and we believed them because some tattoos back then were grossly botched, for sure, weren't done expertly.
So, a tattoo I never got, even when it became the 'in' thing. I asked myself: What would it look like when I start getting all wrinkly, and I still wonder about that!
I seriously considered getting cosmetic make-up tattoos, or permanent make-up - eyeliner and lip-liner. Would not have needed eyebrows done - as a blond toddler, Mom was accused of painting my eyebrows black, but when I grew up, I had to do much plucking of the bushy black eyebrows - ouch! It eventually stopped the excess growth. A friend recently asked me if I paint my eyebrows, and looked at me disbelievingly when I said no, of course not:) They're not black anymore, though, more a steel-grey!
When permanent make-up became popular, I was busy bringing up two sons, so I never got to that. Later on, the thought of the pain and swelling put me off.
Am I sorry I did not do that? Yes, in a way I am. Imagine the time it would have saved, especially when oversleeping and being late for work or an appointment. All I'd need was just putting a lick of lipstick on. Definitely would have been a bonus. I know it is semi-permanent, but I would have gone for touch-ups!
Do I like the tattoo in my first image? Yes, for sure! It brings back fabulous memories of a special day when we attended a Liverpool Legends vs Kaizer Chiefs Legends Football extravaganza, a competition prize hubby won, where we were treated to a VIP experience in the presidential suite of the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. The 'You'll never walk alone' tattoo was of the other prize winner who joined us, and kept in touch with hubby, who was also a big Liverpool fan. I had goose bumps when we were part of the supporters to sing that SONG.
The coolest tattoos I've seen and ones that can save lives are those that warn about a medical condition or allergy. Way better than medic alert bracelets!
