Planting Seeds Again

Yesterday, I decided to buy some more heirloom seeds and so went down to the local garden center and purchased some Cos Paris White lettuce and also a packet of Salad Mixed lettuce.

Believe it or not, I have not grown any lettuce varieties before - I have always been drawn more to other veggies, but I decided that it was time to give it a try.

The seeds have been planted into a container with a mix of river sand, good fertile soil and compost, watered well and placed in a sunny location. Lettuce seeds are very fine, so I made sure that they were not planted too deeply. The container will be watered every morning with a gentle spray so as not to disturb the seeds.

The seeds should germinate in about ten days and all being well, the harvest will be in about eight weeks.

As the seeds emerge, I shall have to keep an eye out for slugs and snails if I am to have any success.

Birds can also be a problem as they love new emerging seedlings and I may have to put some netting over the container to avoid my seedlings from being eaten.

Starting veggie plants from seed is very rewarding - and yes, it is easier to purchase seedling trays with established plants, but when you do everything from scratch and you have success, it really feels good - and best of all, you know that your plants are heirloom as well as non G.M.O.

I shall give an update on my lettuce as they progress and shall look forward to getting a nice harvest.
