Let’s talk about one of my favorite places in Bordeaux, one that combines history, urban art, gastronomy and community. Darwin Éco-système, located in the La Bastide neighborhood. What is now a kind of creative urban laboratory began as “la Caserne Niel”, a military base built between 1874 and 1877 to house various services of the French army. After decades of military use, the site was abandoned and local associations drove its transformation, preserving the original structure and giving it a new, more dynamic purpose aligned with today’s culture. #   # Upon entering, the first thing that catches your attention are the huge murals covering the old hangars—tons of graffiti and street-art that immediately immerse you in the great vibe of the place. Inside the site you’ll discover a large coworking space, eco-friendly clothing stores, cafés where you can work on your laptop or read a book, and an indoor skate park with a 90s-2000s atmosphere. #     # One of the best things is that you don’t need to buy anything to enjoy the place—you can bring your own food or coffee, sit in the sun or in the coworking area, and even enjoy it with your dog. Yes, it’s totally pet-friendly. Plus, the internet connection is good and there are work-friendly spots everywhere. #    # Darwin also hosts second-hand stores, vintage clothes, organic products, and cafés with a retro atmosphere. The vibe is warm thanks to the decoration with wood, exposed metal, recycled furniture and that “industrial chic” feel that stays comfortable. Both its restaurants and other spaces function as meeting zones: brunches, talks, live art and community gatherings (maybe crypto-related in the future 🤫) #  !  # The skate park is one of the place’s gems: a hangar full of ramps, cyclists, skaters and rollers, graffiti on the walls, endless stickers and an incredible energy. A space for both the enthusiasts and the beginners, as they also offer a skate academy. #        # During my visit, I chose a café in Darwin with my laptop since I had several meetings. The natural light was excellent, and I lucked out being there on one of the last warm days of the year so I could enjoy some good vitamin-D-filled sunlight while I worked. Then I moved inside: the music in the background was soft and the people relaxed across all the spaces, many with their dogs. I felt productive, inspired and at the same time part of something different. #     # Walking through Darwin is walking through a story of transformation: this place went from being a closed military space to a creative open territory for new generations. It’s seeing how the past finds new meaning thanks to art, innovation and community. Hablemos de uno de mis lugares preferidos de Bordeaux, uno que combina historia, arte urbano, gastronomía y comunidad. Darwin Éco-système, ubicado en el barrio de La Bastide. Lo que hoy es una especie de laboratorio urbano creativo, comenzó como "la Caserne Niel", una base militar construida entre 1874 y 1877 para agrupar diversos servicios del ejército francés. Luego de décadas de uso militar, el sitio quedó abandonado y las asociaciones locales impulsaron su reconversión, preservando la estructura original y dándole un nuevo propósito más vivo y ajustado a la cultura actual. #   # Al entrar, lo primero que te llama la atención son los enormes murales que cubren los antiguos hangares mucho graffiti y street-art que te hace sentir desde el inicio, la buena vibra que inunda el lugar. Dentro del recinto encuentras un coworking amplio, tiendas de ropa eco-friendly, cafés donde puedes trabajar con tu laptop o leer un libro y un skate park indoor con ambiente de los 90s-2000s. #     # Una de las mejores cosas es que puedes ir sin necesidad de consumir, puedes llevar tu propia comida o tu café, sentarte al sol o en el coworking e incluso disfrutar con tu perro. Sí, es totalmente pet-friendly. Además, la conexión a internet es buena y hay espacios para trabajar por doquier. #    # Darwin también alberga tiendas de segunda mano, prendas vintage, productos orgánicos, y cafés con atmósfera retro. El ambiente es cálido gracias a la decoración con madera, metal expuesto, muebles reciclados y esa vibra “industrial” que no pierde la comodidad. Tanto sus restaurantes como otros espacios funcionan como zonas de encuentro: brunches, charlas, arte en vivo y encuentros de comunidades (quizás algo relacionado con crypto en el futuro 🤫) #    # El skate park es una de las joyas del lugar. Un hangar lleno de rampas, ciclistas, skaters y rollers, graffitis en las paredes, stickers infinitos y una energía increíble. Un espacio tanto para conocedores como principantes ya que tambien tiene academia de skate. #        # Durante mi visita, elegí tomar un café en Darwin con mi laptop ya que tenía varias reuniones. La luz natural es genial, tuve la oportunidad de ir en uno de los últimos días cálidos del año así que pude disfrutar de unas buenos rayos solares llenos de vitamina D mientras trabajaba. Luego me dirigí a la parte de adentro, la música de fondo era suave y las persona disfrutaban relajadas de todos los espacios, muchos de ellos con su perro. Me sentí productiva, inspirada y al mismo tiempo parte de algo distinto. #     # Caminar por Darwin es caminar por una historia de transformación, este lugar pasó de ser de espacio militar cerrado a un territorio creativo abierto para las nuevas generaciones. Es ver cómo el pasado encuentra un nuevo sentido gracias al arte, la innovación y la comunidad.
