I don't know why but I always get excited when I see Denzel Washington in a new movie of course this is not a new movie but the truth is I try not to miss any movie where he appears, for me the guy has that presence that makes you stay glued to the screen and in The Book of Eli from 2010 he definitely didn't disappoint me at all. This movie caught my attention from the first moment because it mixes the post apocalyptic world with religious elements in a way I had never seen before, although I must admit that at the beginning I didn't really know what to expect. The Hughes brothers who directed this thing really knew how to create a dense and oppressive atmosphere is seen in the visuals which by the way is something I really liked because it makes you feel inside the scene and I came to believe that I was walking through that dusty desert along with Eli. Denzel plays Eli, a man who walks west for thirty years carrying the last sacred book left on earth after a nuclear war destroyed civilization, I really wouldn't dare mess with this guy hehehe.
Yo no sé por que pero siempre me emociono cuando veo a Denzel Washington en una pelicula nueva claro esta no es una peli nueva pero la verdad trato de no perderme ninguna donde el aparece, es que para mí el tipo tiene esa presencia que hace que te quedes pegado a la pantalla y en The Book of Eli del 2010 definitivamente no me decepcionó para nada. Esta pelicula me llamo la atencion desde el primer momento porque mezcla el mundo post apocaliptico con elementos religiosos de una manera que nunca antes había visto, aunque debo admitir que al principio no sabía muy bien que esperar. Los hermanos Hughes que dirigieron esta cosa realmente supieron como crear una atmosfera densa y opresiva se ve en la parte visual que por cierto es algo que me gustó mucho porque hace que te sientas dentro de la escena y llegué a creer que estaba caminando por ese desierto polvoriento junto con Eli. Denzel interpreta a Eli, un hombre que camina hacia el oeste durante treinta años llevando el ultimo libro sagrado que queda en la tierra después de que una guerra nuclear destruyó la civilización, la verdad yo no me atrevería a meterme con este tipo jejeje.

Every scene looks like a post apocalyptic painting because there are gray clouds and dust floating in the air, it reminded me a lot of Mad Max but with a more spiritual and philosophical touch that gives it a completely different dimension. Gary Oldman plays the role of the bad guy Carnegie, a guy who controls a small town and desperately wants the book of Eli because he knows that the words have the power to control the masses, I found this character interesting because he is not evil just because, but has very clear but twisted motivations. The action scenes are brutal, Eli fights with a machete and the way Denzel executes those fight sequences makes you believe that he really is an experienced warrior, there is a scene in the bar where he faces several guys at the same time and it is too much action and violence I think this is why I like his movies so much.
Una de las cosas que más me gusto de esta película es que van revelando la información poco a poco y nunca te dicen todo de una vez sino que te van dando pistas aqui y alla hasta que al final todo cobra sentido de una manera que te deja con la boca abierta, siempre me gustán las pelis que te hacen pensar y adivinar porque así me enganchan más. Cada escena parece una pintura post apocaliptica porque hay unas nubes grises y el polvo se ve flotando en el aire, eso me recordó mucho a Mad Max pero con un toque mas espiritual y filosofico que le da una dimension completamente diferente. Gary Oldman hace el papel del malo de la peli Carnegie, un tipo que controla un pequeño pueblo y que quiere desesperadamente el libro de Eli porque sabe que las palabras tienen poder para controlar a las masas, este personaje me parecio interesante porque no es malvado porque si, sino que tiene motivaciones muy claras aunque retorcidas. Las escenas de accion estan brutales, Eli pelea con un machete y la manera en que Denzel ejecuta esas secuencias de pelea hace creer que realmente es un guerrero con experiencia, hay una escena en el bar donde se enfrenta a varios tipos al mismo tiempo y es demasiada acción y violencia creo que por esto es que me gustan tanto las pelis de él.

The secondary characters are well developed, especially the bad guys who are a threat and every time a survivor appears I am reminded of how dangerous this world is where civilization is completely destroyed.

Pero si me gustó mucho que su personaje evoluciona a lo largo de la historia, empieza siendo una chica ingenua que no conoce el mundo exterior y termina convirtiéndose en alguien más fuerte y determinado, es un buen desarrollo pero creo que otra actriz hubiera logrado transmitir mejor esa transformación. Tom Waits también aparece me gustó mucho verlo allí aunque sale muy poco tiempo, es un ingeniero que arregla equipos electrónicos a mí me parece que el tipo siempre le da un toque especial a cualquier película en la que aparece, aunque sea por unos pocos minutos. Los personajes secundarios están bien desarrollados, sobretodo los malos que son una amenaza y cada vez que aparece algún sobreviviente me recuerda lo peligroso que es este mundo donde la civilización se destruyó completamente.

Al final final de la peli hay un gran cambio y es que descubres que Eli ha estado ciego durante todo el viaje, esto me impresionó pero entendí la razón de muchas cosas que parecian extrañas durante la película y al descubrirlo me di cuenta de que ya todo tenía sentido. Aunque cuando me di cuenta de esto, quería volver a ver toda la peli desde el principio para así captar todas las pistas que se me pasaron por alto, yo creo que este el tipo de revelación que hace que una buena película se convierta en una excelente porque cambia completamente tu perspectiva sobre todo lo que acabas de ver. El hecho de que el libro este escrito en braille y que Eli lo haya memorizado palabra por palabra durante sus años de lectura diaria es genial y cuando llega a Alcatraz y empieza a recitar toda la Biblia de memoria para que la impriman otra vez, es un momento bastante poderoso. For me in this movie the direction of the Hughes brothers is very good although I must say that in some moments I thought the plot was a little slow especially in the second part where the pace slows down a lot and there are some scenes that are unnecessary. As I said the visual part is very good also the costumes and even the weapons, everything looks very real and believable in that world that is destroyed. The main message about the importance of preserving culture and knowledge in dark times got to me quite a lot I think it's very relevant and I like how they convey it and they are not obvious or heavy at all. My score for The Book of Eli is 7.5/10, it's a movie that combines action, drama and spiritual elements in a pretty balanced way, it has some flaws in the script and in certain performances but I think at least Denzel Washington ate it in this role and that change at the end with the revelation that Eli is blind makes it more interesting. I think I would watch it again to catch all the details I missed, I definitely recommend watching it, it's a completely different post apocalyptic movie and has a lot more substance than just explosions and shootouts.
Para mí en esta peli la dirección de los hermanos Hughes es muy buena aunque debo decirlo en algunos momentos me pareció que la trama era un poco lenta más que todo en la segunda parte donde el ritmo baja muchjo y hay algunas escenas que son como innecesarias. Como dije la parte visual es muy buena también también el vestuario y hasta las armas, todo se ve super real y creible dentro de ese mundo que está destruido. El mensaje principal sobre la importancia de preservar la cultura y el conocimiento en tiempos oscuros me llegó bastante me parece que es muy relevante y me gusta como lo transmiten y no son nada obvios ni pesados. Mi puntuación para The Book of Eli es 7.5/10, es una película que combina acción, drama y elementos espirituales de una manera bastante equilibrada, tiene algunas fallas en el guion y en ciertas actuaciones pero pero creo que por lo menos Denzel Washington se la comió en este papel y ese cambio al final con la revelación de que Eli es ciego la hace más interesante. Creo que volvería a verla para asdí agarrar todos los detalles que se me escaparon, definitivamente recomiendo verla es una peli post apocalíptica completamente diferente y tiene muchio mas de sustancia que solo explosiones y tiroteos.
