I had not had time to watch The Brutalist because it is a movie that lasts a long time and I know that you have to pay enough attention to it and my mother it is very long, it is more than three hours, the director is Brady Corbett and I think it is a very ambitious work where the story of Laszlo Toth is told, a Hungarian Jewish architect played by Adrien Brody who survived the Holocaust and arrives in the United States looking for the American dream, but poor man that dream becomes a nightmare. The film opens with an iconic scene where we see the statue of liberty upside down and this image sticks in the mind because it shows what is to come, this is not the typical immigration story where everything turns out well in the end but quite the opposite.

No había tenido tiempo de ver The Brutalist porque es una película que dura mucho tiempo y se que hay que prestarle bastante atención y mi madre que si es bien larga, son más de tres horas, el director es Brady Corbett y creo que es un trabajo bastante ambicioso donde se cuenta la historia de Laszlo Toth, un arquitecto húngaro judío interpretado por Adrien Brody que sobrevivió al Holocausto y llega a Estados Unidos buscando el sueño americano, pero pobre hombre ese sueño se convierte en una pesadilla. La película arranca con una escena icónica donde vemos la estatua de la libertad al revés y esta imagen se queda grabada en la mente porque muestra lo que está por venir, este no es la típica historia de inmigración donde todo sale bien al final sino todo lo contrario.

The first half of the film is almost perfect, here Laszlo arrives in Philadelphia and stays with his cousin Attila who is played by Alessandro Nivola, who represents everything Laszlo refuses to be, an immigrant trying to erase his identity to fit into American society. These two don't get along very well and even more so when Guy Pearce shows up as Harrison Van Buren an industrial magnate who hires Laszlo to renovate his library, but when he finds out about the job he explodes in a brutal way and fires them both. I thought he was very good in this role of a powerful man but you can tell he's insecure, he goes between generosity and cruelty in a way that keeps you on edge because you never know if he's going to be nice or if he's going to explode. The relationship between László and Harrison is the center of the film and it's somewhat toxic where power is always unbalanced and art becomes a form of control. Brody's performance is also wonderful, showing a man who has lost everything but clings to his artistic vision as if it is the only thing he has left and when he cries when he sees the photos of his buildings in Budapest I felt it broke my soul. These themes of immigration, capitalist exploitation and survival are quite profound, yet the film touches on them in a subtle but powerful way without falling into cant.

La primera mitad de la película es casi que perfecta, aqui Laszlo llega a Filadelfia y se queda con su primo Attila que es interpretado por Alessandro Nivola, quien representa todo lo que Laszlo se niega a ser, un inmigrante que trata de borrar su identidad para encajar en la sociedad americana. Estos dos no se llevan muy biwen y más cuando Guy Pearce aparece como Harrison Van Buren un magnate industrial que contrata a Laszlo para renovar su biblioteca, pero cuando descubre el trabajo explota de una manera brutal y los despide a ambos. A mí me pareció que es muy bueno en este papel de hombre poderoso pero se nota que es un inseguro, va entre la generosidad y la crueldad de una manera que te mantiene en tensión porque nunca sabes si va a ser amable o si va a explotar. La relación entre László y Harrison es el centro de la peli y es algo tóxica donde el poder siempre está desequilibrado y el arte se convierte en una forma de control. La actuación de Brody también es maravillosa, mostrando a un hombre que ha perdido todo pero que se aferra a su visión artística como si fuera lo único que le queda y cuando llora al ver las fotos de sus edificios en Budapest sentí que me partió el alma. Estos temas sobre la inmigración, la explotación capitalista y la supervivencia auqnue son bastante profundas la película los toca de una forma sutil pero poderosa sin caer en cantaletas.

After the intermission, when Felicity Jones appears as Laszlo's wife Erzsébet, the film takes a different turn and I found it didn't quite work. Although Jones plays her role well I think there is already too much going on and yes it's good that she adds something to the emotional part but I think it makes the film more scattered. This reunion of a couple after years apart should be exciting but it seemed forced. Also this second half throws in some subplots that are never fully developed, like Laszlo's heroin addiction, which comes out of nowhere and is more like to throw in drama. The community center project that Harrison commissions from Laszla becomes the main focus and the movie starts to lose steam, because instead of delving deeper into the artist-sponsor relationship it veers off into other less interesting things.

Después del intermedio, cuando Felicity Jones aparece como Erzsébet la esposa de Laszlo, la película toma un rumbo diferente y me parece que no terminó de funcionar bien del todo. Auqnue Jones hace bien su papel creo que ya hay demasiadas cosas y si está bien que añade algo a la prte emocional pero creo que hace que la película sea más dispersa. Esta reunión de pareja después de años separados debería ser emocionante pero m´s bien me pareció forzada. También esta segunda mitad mete unas subtramas que nunca se desarrollan completamente, como la adicción a la heroína de Laszlo, que aparece de la nada y es más como para meter drama. El proyecto del centro comunitario que Harrison encarga a Laszla se convierte en el foco principal y la peli empieza a perder fuerza, porque en lugar de profundizar en la relación artista-patrocinador se va desviando a otras cosas menos interesantes.

By the third act the film really goes off the rails, because instead of building towards a satisfying conclusion, it keeps throwing in more stuff that of course won't have time to develop well. The final confrontation between Erzsebet and Harrison at the dinner party is dramatic but I found it rather theatrical for the realistic tone it had maintained up to that point so it feels like it was taken out of another movie. The way Harrison simply disappears after being confronted is frustrating I was expecting more real closure on this character who had been so central to the whole story and that supposed suicide seemed like an easy way out for the writers. I think the film has some brilliant moments especially in its first two hours, but they were too ambitious and the story got a bit lost and ended up being less than it could have been. My score for The Brutalist is 7.5/10 I think the themes are there, the performances and direction are great but the narrative structure fell apart with so much that couldn't be encompassed.

Ya para el tercer acto la película realmente se descarrila, porque en lugar de construir hacia una conclusión satisfactoria, sigue metiendo más cosas que por supuesto no van a tener tiempo de desarrollarse bien. La confrontación final entre Erzsebet y Harrison en la cena es dramática pero me pareció bastante teatrera para el tono realista que había mantenido hasta ese momento entonces parece como si fuera sacada de otra peli. La forma en que Harrison simplemente desaparece después de ser confrontado es frustrante yo me esperaba un cierre más real sobre este personaje que había sido tan central durante toda la historia y ese supuesto suicidio me pareció como una salida fácil de los guionistas. Yo creo que la película tiene momentos brillantes especialmente en sus primeras dos horas, pero fueron muy ambiciosos y la historia se perdió un poco terminando siendo menos de lo que pudo haber sido. Mi puntuación para The Brutalist es 7.5/10 creo que los temas están ahí, las actuaciones y la dirección son buenísimas pero la estructura narrativa se vino abajo con tantas cosas que no se pudieron abarcar.

It is evident that Corbett had a clear and ambitious vision but he did not manage to complete it well, this film is something important and also necessary because in these times where the issues of immigration and xenophobia are being seen quite a lot but it left me with a feeling that something is missing as if it were incomplete and I think it is part of that same thing when you try to cover a lot there are things that can not be deepened well. Even though it lasted so long it didn't feel heavy, it was justified in some moments but it lacked in others. To see this movie you have to have time and patience and although it didn't leave me satisfied at the end I think it's worth seeing although I understand that because of its length it's not for everyone.

Es evidente que Corbett tenía una visión clara y ambiciosa pero no logró completarla bien, esta película es algo importante y también necesaria porque en estos tiempos donde los temas de inmigración y xenofobia se están viendo bastante pero me dejó con una sensación de que algo falta como que si estuviera incompleta y creo que es parte de eso mismo cuando trata de abarcar mucho hay cosas que no se pueden profundizar bien. Aunque durara tanto tiempo no se me hizo pesada más bien se justifica en algunos momentos pero si faltó en otros. Para ver esta película tienes que tener tiempo y paciencia y aunque no me dejó satisfecha al final creo que vale la pena verla aunque entiendo que por lo larga no es para todo el mundo.
