The Map That Leads to You is one of those movies you watch when you just want to sit down and let yourself go without thinking much about anything complicated or deep, in the story the main character named Heather is fresh out of college and goes on a trip to Europe with her two best friends before starting her finance job in New York, it's that trip many people take after graduation to live a little before entering the serious and boring adult life of offices and responsibilities. During the trip she meets Jack a really laid-back and adventurous guy who lives without plans and without worries following an old diary from his grandfather all over Europe, and well obviously they fall in love and here comes the whole romance outbreak. What I liked most about this movie is how beautiful it looks, every scene is full of warm colors and European landscapes that make you want to grab your backpack and go explore Spain and Portugal without thinking twice, it's truly beautiful with those yellow and blue tones that give a very artistic and relaxed touch to everything, the drone shots are spectacular everything looks so real, I felt like I was watching one of my friends' trip. The actors do a good job, I liked KJ Apa's performance because he gives Jack that mysterious guy vibe and you understand why Heather falls in love so fast I would've fallen in love too hehehe, Maline Klein is also good as Heather although I feel she's a bit flatter compared to Jack but it still works for the story. The chemistry between them is real and natural it doesn't look forced like in other romantic movies where the actors look like they can't stand each other off camera.

The Map That Leads to You es una de esas películas que ves cuando solo quieres sentarte y dejarte llevar sin pensar mucho en nada complicado o profundo, en la historia la protagonista que se llama Heather está recién graduada de la universidad y se va de viaje a Europa con sus dos mejores amigas antes de empezar su trabajo en finanzas en Nueva York, es ese viaje que muchos hacen después de graduarse para vivir un poco antes de entrar a la vida adulta seria y aburrida de oficinas y responsabilidades. Durante el viaje conoce a Jack un tipo bien relajado y aventurero que vive sin planes y sin preocupaciones siguiendo un diario viejo de su abuelo por toda Europa, y pues obvio se enamoran y aquí viene todo el brote de romance. Lo que más me gustó de esta pelicula es lo bonita que se ve, cada escena está llena de colores cálidos y paisajes europeos que te dan ganas de agarrar tu mochila e irte a recorrer España y Portugal sin pensarlo dos veces, es de verdad hermoso con esos tonos amarillos y azules que le dan un toque muy artístico y relajado a todo, las tomas con drones son espectaculares tpdo se ve muy real, sentí que estaba viend el viaje de una de mis amigas. Los actores hacen un buen trabajo, me gustó la actuación de KJ Apa porque le da a Jack un aire así de tipo misterioso y uno entiende porque Heather se enamora tan rápido yo también me hubiese enamorado jejeje, Maline Klein también está bien como Heather aunque siento que es un poco más plana comparado con Jack pero igual funciona para la historia. La química entre ellos es real y natural no se ve forzada como en otras películas románticas donde los actores parece que ni se soportan fuera de cámara.
Now when it comes to the story it's pretty predictable if you've already seen movies like The Fault in Our Stars or Me Before You which by the way I love and I've watched it like three times. From the beginning you know something bad is going to happen because Jack has that vibe of a character who's hiding something big and dark and there are clues everywhere that he's sick, he keeps coughing and grabbing his chest in several scenes and talks a lot about death and living in the moment in a way that sounds almost philosophical for a guy his age, so when it's revealed that he has cancer or leukemia or whatever it's not really a surprise for anyone who's seen this type of movie before. What I didn't like is that they never really say what he has or how much time he has left, that's left in the air and it gave me the impression that the writers didn't want to commit to the details. The part where Jack abandons Heather at the airport is very rough because the guy goes to the bathroom and never comes back leaving her alone on the plane without any explanation, I thought it was very cruel regardless of his reasons and even though later you understand he did it to protect her from watching him die it's still something selfish that I don't know if it's justified. The ending is kind of open and doesn't tell you what happens after Heather finds him in Spain, you don't know if she stays with him while he dies or if she goes back to her life in New York, it just ends there and leaves you with more questions than answers.
Ahora bien en cuanto a la historia es bastante predecible si ya has visto películas como The Fault in Our Stars o Me Before You que por cierto me encanta y la he visto como tres veces. Desde el principio sabes que algo malo va a pasar porque Jack tiene esa vibra de personaje que está escondiendo algo grande y oscuro y hay pistas por todos lados de que está enfermo, se la pasa tosiendo y agarrándose el pecho en varias escenas y habla mucho sobre la muerte y vivir el momento de una forma que suena casi que filosófica para un tipo de su edad, entonces cuando se revela que tiene cáncer o leucemia o lo que sea no es realmente una sorpresa para nadie que haya visto este tipo de pelis antes. Lo que no me gustó es que nunca dicen bien que es lo que tiene ni cuanto tiempo le queda, eso queda como en el aire y a mí me dio la impresión de que los escritores no quisieron comprometerse con los detalles. La parte donde Jack abandona a Heather en el aeropuerto es muy fuerte porque el tipo se va al baño y nunca regresa dejándola sola en el avión sin ninguna explicación, me pareció muy cruel sin importar las razones que tenga y aunque después entiendes que lo hizo para protegerla de verlo morir igual es algo egoísta que no se si se justifica. El final es medio abierto y no te dice que pasa después de que Heather lo encuentra en España, no sabes si ella se queda con el mientras muere o si regresa a su vida en Nueva York, simplemente termina ahí y te deja con más preguntas que respuestas.
What I can salvage from The Map That Leads to You is that it doesn't fall into the typical and forced dramas that many romantic movies use to create conflict, there are no stupid love triangles or fights between the friends or anything like that and that's good because one is already saturated with those things. When Heather's friends separate from the group each one follows her own path and when Heather calls them they always support her and are good friends without unnecessary drama, for me that's a true friendship since life has enough drama to go around making up ridiculous things just to fill screen time. The friendship between the girls felt real to me, Sophia Wyle does an excellent job as Connie the extroverted and fun friend who's always looking for adventure and Madison Thompson is Amy the calmer and more practical friend, in groups of three there's always that balance. The movie's pace is good, it runs like an hour and a half which is perfect because it's not too long or too short, it goes straight to the point without unnecessary filler and that's something that gives it extra points. For me the travel scenes are the best parts of the movie, watching them go through Barcelona, Pamplona, Porto and other European places is beautiful and makes you want to live that experience, my favorite scene is one on the cable car in Barcelona during sunset that looks spectacular and might be one of the most romantic scenes I've seen in a long time.
Lo que puedo rescatar de The Map That Leads to You es que no cae en los dramas típicos y forzados que muchas películas románticas usan para crear conflicto, no hay triángulos amorosos estupidos ni peleas entre las amigas ni nada de eso y es bueno porque uno ya está saturada de esas cosas. Cuando las amigas de Heather se separan del grupo cada una sigue su propio camino y cuando Heather las llama siempre la apoyan y son buenas amigas sin dramas innecesarios, para mí esa es una verdadera amistad ya la vida tiene suficiente drama para andar inventando cosas ridículas solo para llenar tiempo de pantalla. La amistad entre las chicas me pareció real, Sophia Wyle hace un trabajo excelente como Connie la amiga extrovertida y divertida que siempre está buscando aventura y Madison Thompson es Amy la amiga más tranquila y práctica, en los grupos de tres siempre hay ese equilibrio. El ritmo de la película es bueno, dura como hora y media lo cual es perfecto porque no es muy larga ni muy corta, va directo al punto sin relleno innecesario y eso eso es algo qye hace que tenga puntos extra. Para mí las escenas de viaje son las mejores partes de la película, verlos recorrer Barcelona, Pamplona, Porto y otros lugares europeos es hermoso y te hace querer vivir esa experiencia, mi escena favorita es una en el teleférico en Barcelona durante el atardecer que se ve espectacular y puede que sea una de las escenas más románticas que he visto en mucho tiempo.

Heather represents all those people who are afraid to get off the safe and predictable path because they don't know what's on the other side, and Jack represents that part of us that wants to say screw it all and just live without worrying about the future. It's a nice message although not original, but they show it in an honest way without being too preachy. Jack's grandfather's diary is something interesting that gives depth to his character and makes his journey have a meaning beyond just sightseeing around Europe, he's trying to connect with his grandfather and understand the life of a past generation while going through his illness. That gives emotional weight to the story and makes Jack more than just the typical heartthrob, of course I thought the movie could've shown more of that part of the relationship between Jack and his grandfather because it's interesting but it stays a bit in the background compared to the romance.
El tema central de la película sobre seguir tu corazón versus seguir el plan que ya tienes trazado es algo con lo que mucha gente puede identificarse más que todo los jóvenes que están en esa etapa de transición entre la universidad y la vida adulta. El diario del abuelo de Jack es algo interesante que le da profundidad a su personaje y hace que su viaje tenga un significado más allá de solo andar turisteando por Europa, está tratando de conectar con su abuelo y entender la vida de una generacion pasada mientras pasa po su enfermedad. Eso le da peso emocional a la historia y hace que Jack sea más que solo el típico galanazo, claro a mi me pareció que la peli pudo haber mostardo más esa parte de la relación entre Jack y su abuelo porque es interesante pero queda un poco en segundo plano frente al romance.
The Map That Leads to You is a beautiful and pleasant movie that delivers exactly what it promises, it's perfect to watch on a relaxed day when you want something light and romantic without too much heavy drama, the performances are good, I loved the visual part I think it's one of my favorite things, the music is nice and the story although predictable is well told. If you like romantic movies with a melancholic touch and you don't mind knowing from the beginning how it's going to end then I'd say give it a chance because it's a pleasant experience from start to finish. If you're someone who hates predictable movies or open endings bother you this might not be for you and you better look for something else. I personally enjoyed it a lot despite its flaws because it was what I was looking for at that moment, it made me feel that nostalgia for trips and adventures I haven't had and reminded me that sometimes it's okay to get off the plan and just let yourself go with the moment. It's a movie that has heart and that counts, my score for The Map That Leads to You is 7.5/10, it succeeds at being a beautiful and relaxing romantic movie.

Si te gustan las películas románticas con un toque melancolico y no te importa saber desde el principio como va a terminar entonces te diría que le des una oportunidad porque es una experiencia agradable de principio a fin. Si eres de los que odia las películas predecibles o que te molestan los finales abiertos esta esta no sea para ti y mejor busca otra cosa. Yo personalmente me la disfrute bastante a pesar de sus fallas porque era lo que buscaba en ese momento, me hizo sentir esa nostalgia por viajes y aventuras que no he tenido y me recordó que a veces esta bien salirse del plan y simplemente dejarse llevar por el momento. Es una peli wue tiene corazon y eso cuenta, mi puntuación para The Map That Leads to You es 7.5/10, cumple con ser una peli romántica bonita y relajante.
