I'm back home, and now I'm doing so through this sketch of another portrait from my Vogue series. Today's featured lady is Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans, considered a heroine of France for her significant role in the Hundred Years' War in the third decade of the 15th century.
This young woman was condemned to the stake despite the glory she brought to the crown, leading 5,000 men in the defense and victory of Orleans against the English. The reasons? Joan was warned of heresy for declaring that she had heard voices and had visions that led her to cross-dress to fight for the honor of her country and bring her king to be crowned.
According to several historians, the young woman suffered from epilepsy, which caused auditory hallucinations that, she herself confessed, were exacerbated by the ringing of the bells. The truth is that everything she hallucinated came true, and she emerged as a woman of great courage, determined, with a keen psychological sense, and impervious to sword and fire.
Precisely, these traits of her personality are details I have tried to capture in this drawing. Joan, facing battle, commanding the army, raises her sword, and the determination that drives her will is evident in her gaze. Her hair is short, as she had to cut it to be able to use the equipment of war: chain mail and armor, although in my vision I try to show her femininity with a veil over her head, also as a symbol of her canonization after her death.

Hola, familia de #Sketchbook!!!
Regreso a casa y ahora lo hago mediante este boceto de otro retrato de mi serie Vogue. La dama protagonista de hoy es Juana de Arco, la Doncella de Orléans, considerada heroína de Francia por su significativo roll dentro de la guerra de los Cien Años en la tercera década del siglo XV.
Esta joven mujer fue condenada a la hoguera a pesar de la gloria que le dió a la corona, dirigiendo a 5000 hombres en la defensa y victoria de Orléans contra los ingleses. ¿Las razones? Juana fue acusada de herejía por declarar que había escuchado voces y tenía visiones que le llevaron a travestirse para luchar por el honor de su país y llevar a su rey a ser coronado.
Según varios historiadores, la joven padecía de epilepsia y ello le provocaba alucinaciones auditivas que, ella misma confesó, se agudizaban con el repique de las campanas.
Lo cierto es que todo cuanto alucinó se hizo realidad y trascendió como una mujer de gran valor, determinada, con un alto sentido patriótico y una fe a prueba de espada y fuego.
Precisamente, estas características de su personalidad son detalles que he intentado captar en este dibujo. Juana frente a la batalla, comandando al ejército, levanta la espada y en su mirada se nota la determinación que mueve su voluntad. El cabello es corto, pues ella tuvo que cortarlo para poder usar los enseres de guerra: cota de malla y armadura, aunque en mi visión procuro mostrar su femineidad con un velo sobre su cabeza, además como símbolo de la canonización posterior a su muerte.
Así les muestro a la joven Juana de Arco, una mujer absolutamente extraordinaria.
