Some of you know, as I've mentioned before, that I'm a Shakira fan, but of her older songs and style. Despite the enormous success of her current music, I feel she's lost much of her essence, both in her lyrics and rhythms, which used to be more focused on feeling, artistry, and poetry. Nowadays, the rhythms and especially the lyrics are simply designed to connect with the industry, to sell for the sake of selling. Anyway, my intention isn't to start a debate, much less to change the mind of anyone who thinks differently than me (that person is perfectly entitled to their opinion). However, today I'm pleasantly surprised after seeing the new versions Shakira has been releasing of her older songs, in honor of the 30th anniversary of her album Pies Descansos and the 20th anniversary of Fijación Oral, especially the song Hip Don't Lie (my absolute favorite). So I couldn't pass up the opportunity not only to enjoy it but also to analyze it and share my honest opinion with you. >Algunos de ustedes saben, ya que lo he dicho en ocasiones anteriores, que soy fan de Shakira, pero de sus viejas canciones y estilo, a pesar del enorme éxito de sus canciones actuales siento que ella perdió mucho de su esencia tanto en sus letras como en sus ritmos, los cuales antes estaban más enfocados al sentimiento, al arte y a la poesía. Actualmente los ritmos y en especial las letras están hechos simplemente para conectar con la industria, para vender por vender, pero en fin, mi intención no es entrar en polémica y mucho menos hacer cambiar de opinión a quién piense diferente a mi (esa persona está en todo su derecho) sin embargo hoy estoy gratamente sorprendida luego de ver las nuevas versiones que Shakira ha estado sacando de sus viejos temas, a propósito de 30 aniversario de su álbum Pies Descansos y 20 de Fijación Oral, en especial del tema Hip Don´t Lie (Mi favorito en definitiva) así que yo no podía dejar pasar la oportunidad, no solo de disfrutarlo sino de analizarlo y compartir con ustedes mi san sincera opinión al respecto.
I loved the fresh take they gave this song, and I think inviting Ed Sheeran to collaborate was a brilliant move. The rhythm is very similar to "Shape of You," which has a strong and quite interesting dancehall and tropical house influence. It was actually this track that pushed him out of his comfort zone, venturing into more danceable rhythms. And although I had no idea who Beéle was, I did some research on his music and confirmed my suspicions. He's one of those urban "singers" who doesn't modulate or articulate his words well. However, in this remix of "Hip Don't Lie," I must admit he did a good job. While we can't say he has a marvelous voice, you can understand what he's saying perfectly, and he also gives the song an indigenous and Afro-Caribbean touch, emphasizing the mix of cultures that make up Latin America, which Shakira originally wanted to convey.
Adoré el refrescamiento que le hicieron a esta canción y pienso que fue un gran acierto haber invitado a Ed Sheeran a la colaboración, pues el ritmo se parece mucho a Shape of you donde hay una gran influencia de dancehall y tropical house bastante interesante, fue este tema de hecho el que lo hizo salir de su zona de confort, atreviéndose con ritmos más bailables, y aunque yo desconocía quién rayos era Beéle me puse a investigar un poco en su música y confirmé mis sospechas, se trata de uno de esos "cantantes" de género urbano que no modula ni articula bien las palabras, sin embargo en este refrescamiento de Hip Don´t lie debo reconocer que hizo una buena participación, pues aunque no podemos decir que tiene una maravillosa voz, se entiende perfectamente lo que dice y además le da un toque autóctono y afro caribeño al tema, enfatizando la mezcla de culturas que forman parte de Latinoamérica que Shakira originalmente quería transmitir
The mix of Spanish and English that made this song so popular and original remains, but I particularly feel that Ed Sheeran, with his bright voice, adds a touch of tenderness that gives it a new focus, a refresh, and he also incorporates new verses. Shakira maintains her essence, the same sensuality in her voice and stage presence, but this time the musical arrangements include more percussion and elements of an Afro-Caribbean rhythm from the Colombian Caribbean coast known as "bullerengue," which is characterized by its joyful nature and the singer's vocal call (in this case, Beéle's interpretation). This alludes to the resilience of the people who came from Africa and were enslaved by the Spanish in the Americas, with which Shakira seeks to return to her roots, to her homeland.
Se mantiene la mezcla entre el español y el inglés que hizo tan popular y original esta canción pero particularmente siento que Ed Sheeran con su voz brillante le da un toque de ternura que le da un nuevo enfoque, un refrescamiento, además que incorpora versos nuevos. Shakira mantiene su esencia, la misma sensualidad en su voz y en sus movimientos en escena, pero en esta ocasión los arreglos musicales incluyen más percusión y elementos de un ritmo afrocaribeño de la costa caribe colombiana conocido como "bullerengue" que se caracteriza por ser alegre y tener ese efecto de llamado en la voz del cantante (interpretación de Beéle) en este caso, y esto hace alusión a la resiliencia de las personas que llegaron de África y que fueron esclavizados por los españoles en continente americano, con lo cuál Shakira busca retornar a sus raíces, a su tierra.
It's wonderful to hear Ed Sheeran sing some words and phrases in Spanish (like in the original song), but right towards the bridge of the song I was a little disappointed because I was really hoping he would say my favorite part of the song, "Señorita feel the conga, let me see you move, like you come from Colombia," and he didn't 😄, but I just had to wait a little longer because that part was delayed a bit, meaning that in the end he did say it and it sounded great 😃.
Es maravilloso escuchar a Ed Sheeran cantar algunas palabras y frases en español (como en el tema original) pero justo hacia el puente de la canción me decepcioné un poco ya que esperaba con fervor que él dijera mi parte favorita de la canción "Señorita feel the conga, let me see you move, like you come from Colombia" y no lo dijo 😄, pero solo tenía que esperar un poco más porque esa parte la postergaron un poco, es decir, que al final sí que lo dijo y sonó genial 😃.
In conclusion, I absolutely loved this refresh they gave the song, which was also released to coincide with Spotify's anniversary. It demonstrates Shakira's versatility and her ability to reinvent herself, proving that it's indeed possible to connect with new trends without losing one's own essence. So, this was an excellent way to celebrate her musical legacy. But without further ado, I'll leave you with the video of the re-versioned song so you can judge for yourselves and give me your valuable opinion.
En conclusión, amé ADORÉ este refrescamiento que le hicieron a la canción que salió también a propósito del aniversario de Spotify, demuestra la versatilidad de Shakira y su capacidad para reinventarse, que en efecto es posible conectar con als nuevas tendencias sin perder la esencia propia, así que esta fue una excelente manera de celebrar su legado musical. Pero sin más dilación los dejo con el video de la canción re versionada para que ustedes juzguen pro ustedes mismos y me den su valiosa opinión.
