I'm so excited because I just rediscovered a book that brought back so many memories of my time at drama school. Students train there for three years, and at the end of each cycle, or school year, so to speak, we always performed a play in which we put into practice all the techniques and resources we'd learned. In my first year, it was Romeo and Juliet, so I had to study this play a lot to get to know my character (Juliet) more deeply and be able to give the best performance possible. For me, it's a wonderful reunion with this masterpiece by William Shakespeare. >Estoy emocionadísima porque acabo de reencontrarme con un libro que me trajo muchos recuerdos de la época en la que yo estudiaba en la escuela de teatro. Allí los estudiantes se forman durante tres años, y al final de cada ciclo o año escolar, por llamarlo de alguna manera, siempre hacíamos una obra en la que poníamos en práctica todas las técnicas y recursos aprendidos, y en mi primer año fue el turno de Romeo y Julieta, así que tuve que estudiar muchísimo esta obra para poder conocer más a profundidad mi personaje (Julieta) y poder así ofrecer la mejor interpretación posible, de modo que para mi es un reencuentro maravilloso con esta obra maestra de William Shakespeare.
Overview/Resumen
The play tells the story of two rival families, the Montagues and the Capulets, but during a party Juliet Capulet and Romeo Montague meet and fall completely in love with each other, wishing they didn't have those last names that indirectly separate them, until one day, after seeing that Juliet would be forced to marry Paris, the idea of secretly marrying Romeo arises, and they succeed, but after a misunderstanding, tragedy arises between this couple, a tragedy that paradoxically will show these two families that so much hatred and rivalry is not worth it.
La obra cuenta la historia de dos familias que son rivales, los Montesco y los Capuleto, pero durante una fiesta Julieta Capuleto y Romeo Montesco se conocen y quedan completamente enamorados el uno del otro y deseando no tener esos apellidos que indirectamente los separan, hasta que en una ocasión, luego de ver que Julieta sería obligada a casarse con Paris, surge la idea de casarse a escondidas con Romeo, y lo logran, pero tras un malentendido surge la tragedia entre esta pareja, una tragedia que paradójicamente le demostrará a estas dos familias que no vale la pena tanto odio y rivalidad.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
More than a novel or common narrative this book is a play, it is written with the intention of being performed, since it is written in the script or dramaturgy format, that is, specifying the lines that each character must say, and making a very graphic description of each of their actions, and this paradoxically was one of the reasons why I did not like to read this book when I was in high school and in literature classes they forced me to do it, in addition to the fact that it is written in old English and obviously the translations also conform to the same style in each language, which is somewhat confusing if you do not have sufficient criteria when reading it, that is why I recommend reading this work as an adult.
Más que una novela o narrativa común este libro es una obra de teatro, está escrita con la intención de ser representada, ya que está escrita en el formato guion o dramaturgia, osea, puntualizando las líneas que cada personaje debe decir, y haciendo una descripción muy gráfica de cada una de sus acciones, y esta paradójicamente fue una de las razones por las cuales no me gustaba leer este libro cuando yo estaba en la secundaria y en clases de literatura me obligaban a hacerlo, además de que está escrito en inglés antiguo y obviamente las traducciones también se ajustan al mismo estilo en cada idioma, lo cuál resulta un tanto confuso si no tienes el criterio suficiente a la hora de leerlo, por eso recomiendo leer esta obra siendo ya un adulto..
Reading, performing or watching the play are three different experiences, but they are undoubtedly equally intense. When you read this play you are filled with uncertainty and for a moment you are even filled with hope that this couple will end up happy, but then you are filled with unease knowing that the only thing that could unite these two families is not the love and marriage of their respective children, but the misfortune and pain of loss.
Leer, representar o ver la obra son tres experiencias diferentes, pero sin dudas son igualmente intensas, cuando lees esta obra te llenas de incertidumbre y por un momento hasta te invade la esperanza de que esta pareja termine feliz, pero luego te invade el desasosiego de saber que lo único que podría unir a estas dos familias no es el amor y el matrimonio de sus respectivos hijos, sino la desgracia y el dolor de la pérdida.
On the other hand, the descriptive scenes and actions put you in perfect context and help you easily visualize each moment in your mind. It even helps you have at least an idea of what the character is feeling and what they intend to convey with their words, since this is a guide for the actor or actress.
Por otra parte las escenas y las acciones tan descriptivas te ponen perfectamente en contexto y te ayudan a vislumbrar cada momento sin dificultad en tu mente, incluso te ayuda a tener al menos una noción de lo que el personaje está sintiendo y lo que pretende transmitir con sus palabras, ya que esta es una guía para el actor o actriz.
The iconic Romeo and Juliet balcony scene is charged with emotion, but also adrenaline. It allows us to see Romeo's courage in daring to jump over the walls of the house, and Juliet's nobility in wanting to protect him. Both demonstrate in that moment that they are different from their parents and the rest of their family. Romeo is perhaps a little more passionate, but he was driven more by love than revenge. His gallant and sincere language dismantles any protective barriers Juliet might have had, but at the same time, we are invaded by the adrenaline of being discovered by Juliet's nanny, or worse, by someone in her family.
La icónica escena de Romeo y Julieta en el balcón está cargada de mucho sentimiento, pero al mismo tiempo de adrenalina, nos permite conocer la valentía de Romeo al atreverse a saltar las tapias de la casa, y la nobleza de Julieta al querer protegerlo, ambos demuestran en ese momento que son diferentes a sus padres y al resto de su familia, Romeo es quizás un poco más pasional, pero él se dejó llevar más por el amor que por la venganza. Su lenguaje galante y sincero desarma cualquier barrera de protección que Julieta pudiera tener, pero al mismo tiempo nos invade la adrenalina de que sean descubiertos por el aya de Julieta, o peor aún, por alguien de su familia.
The play teaches us great lessons about how hatred and revenge only bring misfortune to those who allow themselves to be carried away by these negative feelings. It ends in tragedy because it is the only lesson that both families can understand, the dire result of years of conflict. However, this certainly does not prevent the bad taste left in the mouth of the spectator or reader of this great work, except perhaps for imagining the happy couple, living their love in paradise. I remember that on stage my tears were genuine when I thought that even in real life, these types of nefarious things motivated by the hatred of unscrupulous people have happened many times and perhaps continue to happen.
La obra nos deja grandes enseñanzas sobre como el odio y la venganza solo llevan desgracias a aquellos que se dejan llevar por estos sentimientos negativos, termina en tragedia porque es la única lección que ambas familias pueden comprender, el nefasto resultado de años de conflicto, pero esto desde luego no evita ese mal sabor de boca que le queda al espectador o lector de esta gran obra, salvo tal vez el hecho de imaginar a la pareja feliz, viviendo su amor en el paraíso. Recuerdo que en el escenario mis lágrimas eran auténticas al pensar que incluso en la vida real muchas veces ha sucedido y quizá continúen sucediendo este tipo de cosas nefastas motivadas por el odio de personas inescrupulosas.
