It's been a year since I got my Bera Milan, and it was time to do some more specific maintenance on it. Today I want to invite you to join me in this process that included cleaning the carburetor, changing the spark plug and fitting a fuel filter.
Ha pasado un año desde que tengo mi Bera Milan, y ya era hora de hacerle un mantenimiento más específico. Hoy quiero invitarte a que me acompañes en este proceso que incluyó la limpieza del carburador, el cambio de bujía y la adaptación de un filtro de gasolina.
We know that fuel quality in Venezuela is not the best these days. This affects cars and motorcycles alike, which end up presenting performance failures. Some users even choose to add additives to try to improve combustion. I remember that, when I was a child, there were two types of gasoline: 91 and 95 octane, the latter being the Premium, preferred by most. Today, due to the closure of some refineries, the octane rating has dropped considerably to between 80 and 83 octane. This undoubtedly represents a challenge for the proper functioning of our engines.
Sabemos que la calidad del combustible en Venezuela no es la mejor en estos tiempos. Esto afecta por igual a carros y motos, que terminan presentando fallas en el rendimiento. Algunos usuarios incluso optan por añadir aditivos para tratar de mejorar la combustión. Recuerdo que, cuando era niña, existían dos tipos de gasolina: de 91 y 95 octanos, siendo esta última la Premium, la preferida de la mayoría. Hoy en día, debido al cierre de algunas refinerías, el octanaje ha bajado considerablemente, situándose entre 80 y 83 octanos. Esto, sin duda, representa un reto para el buen funcionamiento de nuestros motores.
In my case, the bike started to fail frequently every time I put gas in it. So I took it to my trusted mechanic and, after checking it, he recommended a thorough cleaning of the carburetor and changing the spark plug. For this, I bought a carburetor cleaner and an Aldrich spark plug with iridium tip, suggested by the same mechanic. This spark plug promises better spark, more power and longer life. With everything ready, we got down to work.
En mi caso, la moto comenzó a fallar con frecuencia cada vez que le echaba gasolina. Así que la llevé al mecánico de confianza y, tras revisar, me recomendó hacer una limpieza profunda del carburador y cambiar la bujía. Para ello, compré un limpiador de carburador y una bujía Aldrich con punta de iridio, que me sugirió el mismo mecánico. Esta bujía promete mejor chispa, mayor potencia y una vida útil más larga. Con todo listo, nos pusimos manos a la obra.
The first thing to do was to disassemble the carburetor completely. They carefully opened it up to apply the cleaning product, avoiding wetting certain delicate rubbers that could deteriorate. I was able to see the process up close and, honestly, the carburetor was quite dirty. The mechanic explained to me that, when this happens, the air and fuel mixture is not done correctly, which causes misfiring or unstable idle.
Lo primero fue desmontar el carburador por completo. Lo abrieron cuidadosamente para aplicar el producto limpiador, evitando mojar ciertas gomas delicadas que podrían deteriorarse. Pude ver el proceso de cerca y, honestamente, el carburador estaba bastante sucio. El mecánico me explicó que, cuando esto ocurre, la mezcla de aire y combustible no se hace correctamente, lo que provoca las fallas en el encendido o el ralentí inestable.
Once cleaned, they dried each component with an air gun and reassembled it with precision. Then they installed it back in place. Since the entire system was clean, it made perfect sense to replace the old spark plug as well. As I mentioned, we opted for an Aldrich iridium, ideal for improving spark and combustion efficiency.
Una vez limpio, secaron cada componente con una pistola de aire y lo rearmaron con precisión. Después lo instalaron nuevamente en su lugar. Ya que todo el sistema estaba limpio, tenía mucho sentido reemplazar también la bujía anterior. Como mencioné, optamos por una Aldrich de iridio, ideal para mejorar la chispa y la eficiencia de la combustión.
Something curious is that this bike does not have a fuel filter from the factory, which makes it more vulnerable to dirt that may come in the fuel. Therefore, and thanks to the recommendation of the mechanic, we decided to adapt a scooter filter. This new filter has a kind of magnet inside, designed to trap metallic particles that may arrive with the gasoline. An excellent way to protect the carburetor and extend its life.
Algo curioso es que esta moto no trae filtro de gasolina de fábrica, lo que la hace más vulnerable a la suciedad que pueda venir en el combustible. Por eso, y gracias a la recomendación del mecánico, decidimos adaptar un filtro para scooter. Este nuevo filtro trae en su interior una especie de imán, diseñado para atrapar partículas metálicas que puedan llegar con la gasolina. Una excelente forma de proteger el carburador y extender su vida útil.
Finally, we adjusted the minimum, started the bike and everything was working perfectly. Finalmente, ajustamos el mínimo, encendimos la moto y todo quedó funcionando perfectamente.
