# Colonia Tovar: German tradition among the Venezuelan mountains
Last August, we enjoyed a truly magical family outing: a visit to Colonia Tovar, motivated by the excitement of getting away from our routine and having a different kind of getaway. We left as a family at around 8:30 a.m. from Guarenas, bound for this charming village. Accompanying us on the adventure were José, my life partner; Maxxy, our adventurous dog; our neighbor Josefa, with her stories full of tradition; and Samuel, her great-grandson, whose contagious laughter, mischief, and enthusiasm filled us with energy, encouraged us to explore, enjoy the scenery, and admire everything in 360 degrees.
Colonia Tovar is located in the municipality of Tovar in the state of Aragua, Venezuela. It is one of the most charming tourist destinations in the country. I say this from personal experience, as I have visited it four times. There we met Mrs. Carmen Kanzler (her Instagram account is @carmencitakanzler), a kind woman with ancestors and parents originally from Germany, who told us, while we danced with her in front of the Breidenbach Kaffee restaurant, that the colony was founded in 1843 by German immigrants. Her ancestors preserved their culture intact, filled with memories, nostalgia, hard work, and hope for a new life. She told us that they decided together to maintain their architecture, preserving their German traditions and customs, out of longing for their homeland, which was a little piece of heaven for them. Today, they preserve their architecture, customs, and cuisine, which transport visitors to a little corner of Europe in the middle of the Venezuelan mountains.
Upon arrival, around 10:00 a.m., we stopped to take several photos at the entrance to the Colonia, visit the gas station, and meet the locals. We bought a few things and enjoyed our first cold beers. Then we parked to begin exploring the town on foot, slowly, step by step, enjoying every corner in its different cardinal points. We walked down a path to the central square, which welcomed us with flowers, picturesque houses, and the irresistible aroma of freshly baked bread, chocolate, and strawberries with cream, inviting us to taste its sweet traditions. We walked along cobbled streets, like something out of a fairy tale, while the cool air reminded us that we were in the heart of the mountains, where fresh, pure air could still be enjoyed, and the hills reminded us of the magic of the place.
The traditional tourist route begins in the central square, adorned with colorful gardens and surrounded by houses with wooden facades and white walls, a Bavarian heritage that is also reflected in its church, market, and surroundings. Afterwards, it is common to visit emblematic places by taking the rustic buses that make five or more stops, including: the entrance arch, the Hydrangea Garden, the Tree House, Café Tovar, the beer factory, and the chocolate factory, among others. Many travel agencies offer packages that include air-conditioned transportation, meals, and drinks, with prices ranging from $10 to $50. You can also hire agencies that offer comfortable stays that vary in price depending on the plan you select.
Continuing our tour, we visited the village church, a symbol of the faith and history of the settlers. Its interior, illuminated by stained glass windows, invites a moment of pause, reflection, contemplation, and communion with God. This was one of the most special moments, where the bells rang like guardians of time, and upon entering the temple, the light from the stained glass windows enveloped us in an atmosphere of calm and spiritual connection. I felt so connected that I began to pray in these moments of distress, to lighten the load, to feel a little peace, tranquility, and harmony in our journey.
The cuisine is another of the great attractions: sausages, jams, craft beers, and typical sweets that are part of the must-try menu for anyone who visits. In addition, the local markets offer mountain fruits, native to the area, freshly harvested, and products handmade by the inhabitants, all of which are works of art.
Later, we gathered around the table at a typical restaurant called Lunch Mariangel to enjoy delicious dishes: craft beers, sausages, and a delicious dessert that left us wanting more. Samuel ordered a hamburger with fries, while we enjoyed traditional German hot dogs with Polish sausages, a real delicacy, and the place itself seemed to be in a wonderland. Maxxy enjoyed everything around him, in his own way, happy with the aromas of the place and even loving the German sausages....
The landscape was the icing on the cake, with natural viewpoints offering unforgettable postcard views of green mountains, soft mist, and a sunset that painted the sky in shades of gold and pink. At that moment, we understood why Colonia Tovar is a destination that stays in your soul.
Before leaving, we talked to locals and jeep agencies that offer tours. They told us about a jeep tour to a beach hidden behind the mountains. It was like a promise to return and discover even more of the magic of this place, which is a hidden passage for all adventurers, as there are excursions that connect you with trails and even a beach hidden behind the mountain, a perfect plan for those of us who seek to combine nature, pleasure, fun, taste, and adrenaline.
Visiting Colonia Tovar is to experience a unique blend of history, tradition, and breathtaking landscapes. It is a place that captivates families, couples, and travelers of all kinds. For us, more than a tourist trip, it was an experience that united us as a family and travel companions in time, full of culture, flavors, and memories that will be a valuable gift of those beautiful captured memories that we will always treasure. Without a doubt, we will return to that magical corner of Germany in Venezuelan lands, an entrepreneurial town with dreamlike landscapes and an incomparable cultural stamp.

# Colonia Tovar: Tradición Alemana entre montañas Venezolanas
El pasado mes de Agosto, disfrutamos un paseo familiar realmente mágico: Una visita a la Colonia Tovar, motivados por la emoción, salir de la rutina y que fuera una escapada distinta. Salimos en familia a eso de las 8:30 am desde Guarenas con destino a este encantador pueblo. En la aventura nos acompañaron: José, mi compañero de vida; Maxxy, nuestro perro aventurero; la vecina Josefa, con sus historias llenas de tradición; y Samuel, su bisnieto, cuyo contagioso risas, travesuras y entusiasmo nos llenó de energías, animó a explorar, disfrutar del paisaje y admirar todo en 360 grados.
La Colonia Tovar se encuentra ubicada en el municipio Tovar del estado Aragua, Venezuela. Es uno de los destinos turísticos más encantadores del país. Lo digo por experiencia propia, pues ya la he visitado en cuatro ocasiones. Allí conocimos a la señora Carmen Kanzler (su cuenta en instagram @carmencitakanzler), una amable mujer con descendencia y padres originarios de Alemania, quien nos contó, mientras bailábamos con ella frente al restaurante Breidenbach Kaffee, que la colonia fue fundada en 1843 por inmigrantes alemanes. Sus ancestros conservaron una cultura intacta, cargada de recuerdos, nostalgia, esfuerzo y esperanza de construir una vida nueva. Nos relató que decidieron en conjunto mantener su arquitectura, conservando sus tradiciones y costumbres alemanas, por la añoranza de su pueblo, que fuera un pedacito de su cielo; hoy por hoy conservan su arquitectura, costumbres y gastronomía que transportan a los visitantes a un pequeño rincón europeo en medio de la cordillera venezolana.
Al llegar, alrededor de las 10:00 am, nos detuvimos para tomar varias fotos en la entrada de la Colonia, visitar la gasolinera y conocer a los lugareños. Compramos algunas cosas y disfrutamos de nuestras primeras cervezas bien frías. Luego estacionamos para comenzar a recorrer el pueblo a pie, despacio, piano a piano, disfrutando de cada rincón en sus diferentes puntos cardinales. Bajamos por un sendero hasta la plaza central, que nos recibió con flores, casas pintorescas y el aroma irresistible de pan recién horneado, chocolate y fresas con crema, invitándonos a degustar sus dulces tradiciones. Caminamos por calles empedradas, como sacadas de un cuento de hadas, mientras el fresco nos recordaba que estábamos en pleno corazón de la montaña, aires frescos y puros todavía se podía apreciar, esas colinas nos recordaban la magia del lugar.
El recorrido tradicional del turista comienza en la plaza central, adornada con jardines coloridos y rodeada de casas con fachadas de madera y paredes blancas, una herencia bávara que se refleja también en su iglesia, mercado y alrededores. Después, es común visitar lugares emblemáticos abordando los rústicos que recorren cinco o más paradas, entre ellas: el Arco de entrada, el Jardín de las Hortensias, la Casita del Árbol, Café Tovar, la fábrica de cerveza y la de chocolate, entre otros. Muchas agencias de viajes ofrecen paquetes que incluyen transporte con aire acondicionado, comidas y bebidas, con precios que varían entre 10 y 50 dólares. Tambien puedes contratar agencias que te ofrecen cómodas estadías que varían de precio según el plan a seleccionar.
Continuando con nuestro recorrido, visitamos la iglesia del pueblo, símbolo de la fe y la historia de los colonos. Su interior, iluminado por vitrales, invita a un momento de pausa, reflexión, contemplación y comunión con Dios. Este fue uno de los momentos más especiales, donde las campanas resonaban como guardianas del tiempo, y al entrar al templo se abrió paso, la luz de los vitrales nos envolvió en un ambiente de calma y conexión espiritual, me sentí tan conectada, que empecé a orar en estos momentos de aflicción, para aliviar la carga, sentir un poco paz, tranquilidad y armonía en nuestro andar.
La gastronomía es otro de los grandes atractivos: salchichas, mermeladas, cervezas artesanales y dulces típicos que forman parte del menú imperdible de todo aquel que la visita. Además, los mercados locales ofrecen frutas de montaña, autóctonas del lugar, recién sacadas de cosechas y productos elaborados a mano por los habitantes, totalmente una obra de arte todo aquello.
Más tarde, la mesa de un restaurante típico llamado Lunch Mariangel nos reunió en torno a platos deliciosos: cervezas artesanales, salchichas y un rico postres que nos dejaron con ganas de repetir. Samuel pidió una hamburguesa con papas fritas, mientras nosotros disfrutamos de los tradicionales perros calientes alemanes con salchichas polacas, un verdadero manjar y el lugar ni se diga, parecía estar en un país de las mil maravillas. Maxxy disfrutó a diestra y siniestra de todo a su alrededor, a su manera, contento con los aromas del lugar y hasta le encantó las salchichas alemanas….
El paisaje fue el broche de oro, miradores naturales regalan postales inolvidables con montañas verdes, neblina suave y un atardecer que pintó el cielo de tonos dorados y rosados. En ese instante entendimos por qué la Colonia Tovar es un destino que se queda en el alma.
Antes de partir, conversamos con lugareños y agencias de jeep que ofrecen recorridos, nos hablaron de un recorrido en jeep hacia una playa oculta tras las montañas. Fue como una promesa de regresar y descubrir aún más de la magia de este lugar; que es un pasaje oculto para todos los más aventureros, ya que existen estas excursiones que te conectan con senderos y hasta con una playa escondida tras la montaña, un plan perfecto para quienes buscamos combinar naturaleza, placer, diversión, gustos y adrenalina.
Visitar la Colonia Tovar es vivir una mezcla única de historia, tradición y paisajes impresionantes, es un lugar que cautiva a las familias, parejas y viajeros de todo tipo. Para nosotros, más que un viaje turístico, fue una experiencia que nos unió como familia y compañeros de viajes en el tiempo; llena de cultura, sabores y memorias, que serán un regalo valioso de esos lindos recuerdos capturados que atesoraremos siempre. Sin lugar a dudas, volveremos a ese rinconcito mágico de Alemania en tierras venezolanas, un pueblo emprendedor con paisajes de ensueño y un sello cultural incomparable.
